Saturday wrap: NP girls soccer twice tied

The New Palestine girls soccer team came through the tough Zionsville Invitational with a 1-0-2 mark on the weekend, all against Hoosier Crossroads Conference teams. The Dragons opened Saturday play with a 0-0 tie against No. 10 Avon at 8 a.m.

Holly Hilton had the shutout in goal against Avon, making five saves. Lauren Joray and Jordan Barton had two shots each as the Dragons outshot the Orioles 8-5.

Facing Westfield, the Dragons took a lead midway through the first half when Joray scored on a penalty kick. Westfield answered 10 minutes into the second half to tie the game, and the contest finished with a 1-1 tie.

NP opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over No. 14 Brownsburg on Friday night.

Boys soccer
Mt. Vernon 3, Shelbyville 0: The Marauders had their second straight victory by beating the Golden Bears Saturday morning at home. MV is now 6-1 on the year and 3-1 in HHC play with a big conference game at Greenfield-Central coming up Thursday evening (live broadcast: www.hancockcountysports.com).

MV took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Luke Fimreite scored the first of his two goals on the day. Adam Luke scored on assists from C.J. Coleman and Kyle Cansler in the second half, before Fimreite scored again.

Corban Hartley made four saves to get the shutout for the Marauders. Drew Kammerer also played three minutes to share the shutout for MV.

Boys tennis
Dragons split two matches: The Dragons boys tennis team hosted a three-way meet with University and Silver Creek Saturday, splitting the two matches.

NP beat University 5-0 with five straight-set victories. All three singles players had perfect second sets -- Reid Clark won 6-1, 6-0, Brent Barrett 6-2, 6-0 and Shayan Khokhar 6-1, 6-0. At doubles, Connor Swain/Evan Poole won 6-3, 6-1 and Kyle Willhelm/Pete Rusche won 6-1, 6-1.


In the second match, NP fell to Silver Creek 4-1. Barrett had the Dragons' victory, splitting the first two sets 6-4, 4-6. Instead of a third set, the teams agreed to play a super-tiebreaker. Barrett won his 10-1. Khokhar also took his match to a super-tiebreaker, but fell 6-4, 5-7, (5-10). Silver Creek won the other three matches in straight sets.
