GBB: Franklin nips New Palestine 47-44

New Palestine's girls basketball team fell 47-44 to Franklin in a close girls basketball game, in the championship in the Franklin Tournament.

The Dragons and Grizzly Cubs traded the lead several times, before the Cubs hit a FT in the final minute to take a 45-44 lead. NP had a three-second violation with the ball with 15 seconds left. Franklin's Tori Fiddler hit two FTs with 13 seconds to go, and the Dragons had two looks from 3-point range fall just short that would've tied the game.

Bethany Murrell led the Dragons with 18 points and nine rebounds. Tori Stephenson added eight points for NP. The Parmer sisters led Franklin -- Tara scored 13 and Shelby had 10, and the duo hit five 3-pointers between them.

NP is now 6-8 and next plays Jan. 10 at Greenwood. That game will be broadcast LIVE by HancockCountySports.com.

GBB: New Palestine in Franklin Tournament final

The New Palestine girls basketball team jumped out to a fast start and pulled away to a 57-45 victory over Indian Creek in the semifinals of the Franklin tournament.

NP will play Franklin -- a 60-39 winner over West Vigo -- at 8 p.m. tonight in the championship game.

Bethany Murrell had a hot start for the Dragons, hitting four first-half 3-pointers en route to a 23-point, eight-rebound day.

NP was off to a hot start in general, shooting over 50 percent for much of the first half and hitting six 3-pointers.

Emily Curry added 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and she added an exclamation point to the opening half with a long 3-pointer at the buzzer, which gave the Dragons a 42-21 lead. Lauren Tieman added 10 points and eight rebounds. Abby Seifert nearly had a double-double without scoring a point -- she had 12 rebounds and a career-high eight assists. Kyleigh Smock & Tori Stephenson each scored five points for the Dragons.

Ally Lehman led IC with 25 points and 14 rebounds.

Wrestling: G-C 4th at Connersville Invitational

Greenfield-Central's wrestling team placed fourth in the 32-team Connersville Spartan Classic invitational over two days Wednesday and Thursday.

Cathedral won the event with 246 points, outpacing Roncalli (240), Evansville Reitz (228) and G-C (191.5). DeKalb (186) was fifth.

Leading the way for the Cougars was 138-pounder Josh Farrell, who was a perfect 5-0 on the two days and was his weight class' champion. Austin Rose (152) and Austin Gearlds (220) were both runners-up, going 4-1 in the event. Ian Early (195) placed third, going 6-1. Dezmen McGinley (170) was fifth, going 4-2. Also placing were Kyle Wilburn (6th, 182), Taylor Wright (7th, 106), Cole Moore (7th, 113) and Garrett Mullins (8th, 120).

Marauders win consolation game

Mt. Vernon was very impressive in a dominant consolation-game victory over Roncalli in the evening session of the Hall of Fame Classic.

MV won 72-46 over the Rebels -- avenging a defeat from last year's regional championship game. The Marauders jumped out to a 23-3 lead, and then after Roncalli closed the Marauder lead to seven late in the third, used a 15-0 run to go up 67-41 and put the game away.

The Marauders controlled the glass -- outrebounding Roncalli 16-4 in the opening half and 36-14 for the game. MV's defense also forced 18 Roncalli turnovers.

MV shot 56 percent from the floor -- including 60 percent after halftime. Roncalli hit 43 percent from the field.

Makenzi Reasor led the Marauders offensively with 19 points, hitting 8-of-13 shots. She also had five boards, a steal and a block. Jessica Brown had a strong all-around game with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. She hit 7-of-13 from the floor. Erica Moore and Rachel Houck both hit 5-of-9 -- Houck buried three 3-pointers. Moore had 15 points and seven boards, Houck 13 points and three steals. Kelsie Owens added six big points off the bench.

MV's point output was its highest of the year, eclipsing its total in its victory against Hamilton Heights in November.

Unbeaten 4A No. 2 Penn -- which beat MV in the opening game -- went on to defeat 3A No. 1 Norwell 46-39 in the championship game.

The Marauders are now 11-3. They are next in action Tuesday against Southport at home.

Marauders to face Roncalli at 6 p.m.

Mt. Vernon fell victim to an early run and fell 62-41 to the 4A No. 2 Penn Kingsmen in the second semifinal at the Hall of Fame Classic.

The unbeaten Kingsmen scored the game's first 17 points and led 25-2 after a quarter. MV rallied in the fourth quarter to close the score, outscoring the Kingsmen 22-13 in the final eight minutes.

Erica Moore had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, as well as two blocked shots for MV. Jessica Brown had nine points and six assists. Rachel Houck hit three 3-pointers and scored a team-high 13 points. She also had four steals.

Western Michigan commit Alex Morton had 15 points to lead Penn. Olivia Carlton scored 14 points and hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Caroline Buhr had 12 points and six rebounds.

MV will face Roncalli in the 6 p.m. consolation game at the New Castle Fieldhouse tonight. Live coverage will begin on HancockCountySports.com at 5:45 p.m. Penn will face 3A No. 1 Norwell in the title game, as Norwell rallied to beat Roncalli 62-59 in the first semifinal.

Hall of Fame Classic Thursday

Mt. Vernon's girls basketball team will participate in the Hall of Fame Classic on Thursday, and HancockCountySports.com will have all of the Marauder action. Join Andrew Smith and Chris Lambert at approximately 12:40 p.m. for the Marauders' semifinal game against Penn.

The Marauders will play at either 6 or 8 p.m. in the night session. Our broadcast will begin 20 minutes before the tipoff.

Here's the schedule from the New Castle Fieldhouse.
11 a.m.: 3A #1 Norwell (8-0) vs. Roncalli (8-3)
1 p.m.: 4A #2 Penn (11-0) vs. 3A #3 Mt. Vernon (10-2)
6 p.m.: Consolation
8 p.m.: Championship

The Marauders are making their third appearance in the Hall of Fame Classic. They last did so in 1999, with a Johna Goff-Alissa Kirby-led team winning the Classic championship. That Marauder team would post a 22-2 record and finished ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, later playing eventual state champ Cathedral in a close sectional semifinal that was essentially the 3A championship game.

This year's MV squad is a balanced, veteran group with four starters returning from last year's 21-2 squad. Guard Jessica Brown, center Makenzi Reasor and forward Erica Moore are all averaging in double-figures, with guard Rachel Houck averaging just under double-figures at 9.3 ppg. Forward Anna Olson is one of the area's top rebounders with an 8.6 average on the glass. Brown, Reasor and Houck all scored in double-figures in the Marauders' 47-31 victory over New Palestine in the county championship game. Reasor (Indiana State) and Brown (Indiana Wesleyan) have committed to play collegiately. Reasor is one of several Div. I signees/commits at the tournament. Brown is headed to one of the NAIA's national powerhouse programs in IWU.

The Penn team MV will face is fairly similar -- a team that allows fewer than 40 points per game, a team that has five starters averaging at least 7.7 points per game and is led by a Div. I signee -- future Western Michigan Bronco Alex Morton, a 5-9 guard who is averaging 17 ppg. Penn is 11-0 and was the Class 4A state runner-up last year. The Kingsmen have won 35 straight regular-season games against Indiana teams dating back to the midpoint of the 2008-09 season. Their only regular-season loss in that span was a loss to an Illinois squad last year.

In the other semifinal, Norwell is a perfect 8-0 and took over the No. 1 spot in Class 3A from MV after the Marauders' early-December loss to Anderson. Since 2009, Norwell is 71-6 and was a regional finalist in 2011. The Knights are led by Miami-Ohio signee Jessica Rupright, who is totaling 18.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Roncalli is 8-3 and is a team familiar to the Marauders -- the two teams met in the regional final last season. The Rebels are missing Butler signee Katie Brewer, who has missed several games with an injury, but have 6-2 junior guard Bridget Perry (Purdue) scoring 21 points per game. Sophomore forward Elizabeth Bowers is averaging 10 points and eight rebounds per contest. The Rebels start four underclassmen.

County finals: Dragon boys, Marauder girls repeat

The Hancock County championship trophies are staying put after this year, as the New Palestine boys and Mt. Vernon girls both used big fourth-quarter runs to win their respective titles tonight at Mt. Vernon.

In the boys game, NP won 61-55, largely spurred by a 16-1 run that spanned the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth that saw a seven-point Marauder lead turn into an eight-point Dragon advantage.

New Palestine junior forward Michael Morris keyed the second-half run, hitting two 3-pointers and scoring 16 of his 26 points after the break. Morris hit 9-of-12 from the floor, nearly all from the perimeter, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. He was also a perfect 4-of-4 from the line. Senior Josh Penley added 11 points and three boards -- scoring several of his points down the stretch to help the Dragons build and maintain their second-half lead. Justin Ikerd hit a big third-quarter 3-pointer in the game-turning run and finished with six points and seven assists. Reid Clark had six points and five boards.

MV sophomore C.J. Coleman helped key an early Marauder edge, as he scored 15 of his team-high 21 points in the first half. Coleman's backcourt mate, junior Anthony Burnett, scored six first-quarter points and finished with eight. Alex Payne hit two fourth-quarter 3-pointers to try to lead the Marauders back from what became an 11-point deficit and scored 11 points on perfect 4-for-4 shooting. Stephen Turner also scored 11 points for the Marauders.

NP is now 8-1 and next plays Jan. 6 against Delta. MV is 5-3 and next plays Jan. 6 at Greenfield-Central in a game we will broadcast live on HancockCountySports.com.

Eastern Hancock won the consolation game 63-26 over Greenfield-Central. The Royals improved to 6-4, G-C fell to 0-9.

In the girls game, Mt. Vernon scored nearly half its points in the final five minutes in a 47-31 victory over New Palestine, to win its third consecutive county title.

NP led 29-24 with five minutes left and had an open look from 3 that would've made it an eight-point game, but MV went on a 21-0 run fueled by its defense and timely 3-point shooting, as Makenzi Reasor, Rachel Houck and Jessica Brown all hit 3-pointers in the run and MV's defense forced several turnovers.

The Marauders were led by Brown's 14 points, four assists and four steals. Reasor finished with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Houck had 10 points. Anna Olson had 10 rebounds to lead MV on the glass.

New Palestine built the lead with strong play from Bethany Murrell, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Abby Seifert had nine boards.

The Marauders (10-2) next play Thursday in the Hall of Fame Classic, with the semifinal game against 4A No. 1 Penn at approximately noon. Listen to the game on HancockCountySports.com. The Dragons are now 5-7 and next play Friday in the Franklin Tournament, facing Indian Creek at noon.

Greenfield-Central won the consolation game 78-47 over Eastern Hancock. Sara Jones had a career-high 22 points for G-C, with LaRae Cruz adding 14. G-C is now 8-5 and next plays Jan. 3 at Delta. EH is now 8-4 and hosts Southwestern (Shelby) Jan. 3.

MV has won a record four county championships so far -- the first two (2003-04 and 2004-05) and the last two. It's a rematch of last year's county final, when MV beat NP 55-32. The Marauders also won a 49-31 decision at NP on Dec. 17. This will mark the third consecutive year that MV and NP will have played each other twice in a season -- in both the regular season and in the county tourney. New Palestine is looking for its second championship, with its previous title coming in 2005-06. MV has won all four tournament meetings. MV"s Julie Shelton is the winningest coach in the nine-year history of the tournament, with four championships.

In the boys tournament, Mt. Vernon and New Palestine will meet in the final for the fourth time -- they previously met in consecutive years from 2006-07 through 2008-09. The two schools have split the last seven championships -- NP is the defending champion, and also won in 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2007-08. MV won the title in 2006-07 and in back-to-back years in 2008-09 and 2009-10. This is also the seventh time in nine years they've met in the county tournament. They have split the first six meetings. NP's Adam Barton and MV's Steve Lynch have each won three county tourneys as head coaches, tying for the lead.

Commentary: Expected NCAA ruling kills Hinkle event

By Andrew Smith,
HancockCountySports.com

A few years back, I grabbed a basketball, dribbled up to the lane, elevated on the springy Hinkle Fieldhouse floor, and fired a jump shot.

Swish.

Bobby Plump hit a memorable shot from nearly that exact spot on that exact floor nearly 50 years before. I wanted to do the same.

Why was it possible?

Because our high school team had been invited to Hinkle to play in a basketball doubleheader.

It was an annual tradition -- there were a few dates we circled on the high school basketball calendar. Sure, Pike High -- where I attended -- had a powerhouse basketball program that was consistently ranked among the state's best, so we played a lot of big games. But there were always a few dates that stood out -- the annual Marion County Tournament, with the final four at Southport in mid-January, and the annual games against other powers like Muncie Central and Ben Davis among them.

But the biggest was our annual trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse, almost always to play the equally-powerful Lawrence North Wildcats. Another memory is playing the Hall of Fame Classic in front of a nearly-packed house at Assembly Hall against Bedford North Lawrence and some guy named Damon.

But according to an NCAA ruling from last month, those things can't happen anymore, as the NCAA has spiked "non-scholastic" events from taking place at college venues. We all remember the furor when the ruling led to the disbanding of a sextupleheader that was scheduled for the gym in early December on 24 hours' notice. It appears to have also killed the Hoosier Heritage Conference girls basketball shootout that was to have taken place at Hinkle that is scheduled for Jan. 21, as reported by both the Daily Reporter and Indianapolis Business Journal sports guru Anthony Schoettle.

Originally, the girls basketball shootout was not affected by the NCAA rule, which only applied to boys hoops. But the NCAA is set to meet and likely add girls programs to that. My guess is, football is probably next.

It's intended to keep some schools from getting a recruiting advantage over others.

What it's doing instead is taking away opportunities. At the risk of telling a "walking to school in the snow uphill both ways" story, it's a crime that today's student-athletes won't get to experience what thousands of Hoosiers have been able to experience.

When we got to play our annual game at Hinkle, it was a date in the "big-time." It was a great opportunity for our players, our fans, our community to be a part of an awesome venue. Yes, Hinkle belongs to Butler University, but since it was built in 1928, it has really belonged to the entire state. It was "ours" -- Mecca for high school hoops. Just about every big game in Indianapolis was played there. It was practically the home gym for Crispus Attucks in its 1950s heyday, and an Indianapolis school could go through the entire state tournament without ever stepping off of Butler's campus to play a tournament game.

It was even better if you caught a day game -- as Mt. Vernon did a couple of years ago when its boys and girls teams played Hamilton Heights at Hinkle -- and saw the blue seats awash in the sunlight pouring in through the windows. But Hinkle was a magical destination.

This is a case of the NCAA cutting off its nose to spite its face. The percentage of student-athletes who will play at a Div. I college is miniscule, and any perceived recruiting advantage is definitely miniscule.

Are there unscrupulous operators who would try to schedule "made-for-TV" events with tons of prospective recruits in a college's venue? Certainly. But those are few and far between, and legitimate operations like Ray Compton's Compton Strategies get sucked into the vortex. It's unfortunate that the many (people like Compton, who have long put on such events that enhance the student-athlete experience) get sucked into the issues with a few.

A sensible alternative would be to have the NCAA approve the operators of such "non-scholastic events" and make sure they don't have ties with agents, shoe companies, AAU teams or colleges themselves. Because, in most cases, these events are put on by well-meaning people who are providing the infrastructure to give high school students a memorable experience, not to gain any perceived recruiting advantage for a school.

After all, high school games have been played at Butler for more than 80 years. It's only been in the last two that Butler University has advanced to the NCAA title game -- in an era when the slate of high school games played at Hinkle was sharply reduced.

The other issue is that conferences like the HHC have long been proactive about giving their student-athletes good experiences. Every three years since 2003, the HHC has held a football quadrupleheader at either the RCA Dome or Lucas Oil Stadium. Given the limited number of opportunities at Lucas Oil next year, the 2012 event -- if it happens -- is slated to be played either there or at Ball State University's Scheumann Stadium. BSU's venue has also hosted numerous "conference days" for neighboring leagues, including the North Central and Mid-Indiana Conferences. The eventual plan was to make this Hinkle quadrupleheader a regular day for both boys and girls teams, giving more of the conference's student-athletes a chance to play a memorable, special game in a special venue. They started with a girls basketball event because all eight HHC schools were slated to play conference games on the weekend of Jan. 21.

All of that could be in jeopardy. The HHC does this as a conference -- a scholastic entity -- to enhance opportunities for its student-athletes. Have a handful gone on to play in college? Certainly, but the vast majority of HHC athletes -- like any high school athletes -- will hang up their tennis shoes or cleats the moment their last IHSAA tournament event ends their senior years.

In the zeal to protect a select few student-athletes from unscrupulous recruiters -- those select few student-athletes who are often influenced by shoe companies, boosters and other handlers and who would be highly unlikely to be influenced by playing one high school game at a college venue -- we deny the many student athletes the opportunity to step out of the normal high school venue and play a memorable game at an awesome venue. We've essentially locked the door and said "to play here, you must get a scholarship."

That's wrong. Well-intentioned, but still wrong.

The NCAA is denying the opportunity to provide outstanding experiences for the many because of the fear of a few. A memorable day and a great celebration of a conference's basketball teams will instead become another 1/20th of the high school basketball schedule.

It's time for the organization to do the right thing and allow approved "non-scholastic" operators like Compton Strategies, the folks running the Region Roundball Rumble (which was booted from Valpo University) and Super Hoops -- whose Jan. 7 all-day classic at Mackey Arena was also shelved -- to use college venues if they've been properly vetted and are proven to not have ties to the slimier elements of college recruiting, and give student-athletes great experiences while they're still in high school, rather than reserving them for the select few who are talented enough to garner a Div. I scholarship.

Until then, I'd implore the HHC to continue to seek out a legendary high school venue within the conference footprint that would work. The Muncie and New Castle Fieldhouses are both iconic venues which would be a great place to host high school hoops.

Programming note: Because of this event changing and the games likely reverting back to their originally-scheduled campus sites, we will have to make adjustments to our broadcast schedule. We were slated to broadcast the New Palestine vs. Rushville and Mt. Vernon vs. Greenfield-Central games that Saturday, in addition to the Eastern Hancock at Lapel boys game that Friday night and the Mt. Vernon vs. Knightstown boys game that Thursday. Several games -- and game dates -- might change due to his move, and therefore, we will significantly change the broadcast schedule. #3 Marauders beat Franklin

In a hard-fought game, the third-ranked Mt. Vernon girls basketball team pulled away to a 68-56 victory over the Franklin Grizzly Cubs Thursday night.

MV used a 15-0 first-quarter run to build a 12-point lead, and had four players score in double-figures in the victory, doing so while battling foul trouble much of the night.

MV improved to 8-2 on the season with the victory, heading into the Hancock County Tournament on Tuesday.

Makenzi Reasor scored eight points in the first-quarter run and finished with 16. Teammate Erica Moore -- the Marauders' other 6-footer on the front line -- led the Marauders with 18 points.

After trailing 15-4 at the end of one, Franklin made a run in the second and cut the Marauders' lead to 30-25 at halftime. Moore had a big third quarter as the Marauders pushed the lead to 46-35, and then MV scored 22 in the fourth to pull away.

Rachel Houck hit six late free throws to help salt the game away, and scored 14 points. Jessica Brown added 13 points and Anna Olson scored seven for the Marauders.

Shelby Parmer led Franklin with a game-high 21 points. The Grizzly Cubs are now 6-5 headed into their own tournament Dec. 30 -- which will include New Palestine. Franklin will meet West Vigo in the first semifinal, with New Palestine facing Indian Creek in the second semi.

The Marauders' next game will be at Eastern Hancock at approximately 11:30 a.m. in Tuesday's Hancock County Tournament. MV is a two-time defending county champion. New Palestine will host Greenfield-Central in the other semifinal round. MV will host the championship and consolation games, with the boys playing at 6 p.m. and the girls at approximately 8 p.m. HancockCountySports.com will broadcast both championship games on Tuesday.

New Palestine wins 5th straight

The New Palestine basketball team trailed at halftime, but seized the lead in the third quarter and eventually pulled away to a 62-48 road victory over Beech Grove Wednesday night.

The victory was the Dragons' fifth straight, and their first since receiving votes in the AP Class 4A poll. The Dragons are now 6-1 on the season heading into the Dec. 27 Hancock County Tournament.

Reid Clark and Josh Penley helped the Dragons take the lead after Beech Grove led for much of the first half. Penley and Michael Morris combined for 16 points in the third quarter after scoring two between them in the first half, helping the Dragons turn a 19-17 deficit into a 39-30 lead. It would be cut to 39-38 when BG's Cody Utterback and Ronnie Dietz hit back-to-back 3-pointers to sandwich the quarter break, but the Dragons responded.

Justin Ikerd's 3-pointer -- the only one for the Dragons in the game -- helped the Dragons re-build a six-point edge and they pulled away from there. Clark scored 10 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter. Penley added 17 points -- 10 in the third quarter, 15 in the second half -- to help lead a balanced attack. Penley also had four rebounds and three steals.

Clark had a double-double -- his second of the season -- by adding 13 rebounds to his 18 points. The Dragons outrebounded Beech Grove 36-20. He scored five straight points in the fourth quarter to help the Dragons pull out to a double-digit lead.

The Dragons had to rally from an early 11-4 deficit, as they scored nine straight points to take a brief lead in the second quarter before BG took the lead at halftime.

Morris added eight second-half points for the Dragons. Brandon Collins had seven points and five rebounds off the bench. Brandon Jonas also had five rebounds. The Dragons' defense held Beech Grove to 34 percent shooting. Zach Barkdull led the Hornets with 22 points and three assists. Ronnie Dietz had 12 points and nine rebounds.

The next games for all of the county teams will be Dec. 27 in the county tournament. New Palestine (6-1) will host Greenfield-Central (0-7); while Eastern Hancock (5-3) will host Mt. Vernon (4-2) in the semifinal rounds, which will begin at 10 a.m. The girls games will follow each.

Notebook: Sectional sites see slight changes

The IHSAA announced the 2011-12 sectional sites Monday, and there were some slight changes from what had been announced earlier this year.

Where the local schools will be headed (all teams feed into the south semistate)
Boys basketball
Greenfield-Central (4A Sectional 9): Sectional at New Castle, regional at Hinkle
New Palestine (4A Sectional 13): Sectional at Center Grove, regional at Shelbyville
Mt. Vernon (3A Sectional 27): Sectional at Mt. Vernon, regional at Greencastle
Eastern Hancock (2A Sectional 41): Sectional at Hagerstown, regional at Connersville

Girls basketball
Greenfield-Central (4A Sectional 9): Sectional at Greenfield-Central, regional at Decatur Central
New Palestine (4A Sectional 13): Sectional at Franklin, regional at Bedford North Lawrence
Mt. Vernon (3A Sectional 27): Sectional at Arlington, regional at Lebanon
Eastern Hancock (2A Sectional 41): Sectional at Cambridge City Lincoln, regional at Speedway

Two of the sites were changes from what was announced -- NP's girls sectional will be at Franklin and not Franklin Central. MV's girls regional will feed into the Lebanon regional, rather than a site at Danville. This year will be the first time since the IHSAA switched to the four-team, three-game regional format in 2002 that MV will not be hosting a girls regional.

Team rankings
Three Hancock County basketball teams are receiving poll votes this week. Mt. Vernon's girls remained No. 3 in Class 3A in the ICGSA girls poll. The Marauders are tied for No. 18 in the single-class IBCA poll. The Marauders are also fourth in the Sagarain Class 3A rankings.

On the boys side, New Palestine is receiving votes in the AP Class 4A poll -- it would be a 22nd-place tie if the poll ranked teams past No. 10. Mt. Vernon is receiving votes in the 3A poll -- and would be in a 16th-place tie. MV is also second in the Sagarin computer rankings in Class 3A, in part because of one of the toughest schedules in the state.

#3 MV girls extend HHC lead

Mt. Vernon posted a 49-31 victory over New Palestine in girls basketball Thursday night, scoring the game's first seven point to take an early lead, then pulling away with an 18-7 fourth quarter.

The victory gave the Marauders a stranglehold on the HHC race, giving them a one-game lead past the halfway point of conference play. MV is 4-0 in league play with three games left -- against Delta, Shelbyville and Greenfield-Central -- and has beaten several of the teams who would be considered top contenders.

Tonight's game was another step in that process. Jessica Brown started the game with five quick points -- giving her 1,000 for her career. Although she finished with seven points, she also had five assists to lead the Marauders in that category.

Where MV showed its muscle was on the glass. 6-footers Erica Moore and Makenzi Reasor helped the Marauders to 14 offensive rebounds and a 12-0 edge in second-chance points. Reasor had a strong all-around game with 18 points and seven boards. Moore had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Both had several key putbacks with the game on the line down the stretch.

Rachel Houck also had seven points for the Marauders, including two big second-half 3-pointers that helped MV pull away.

The Dragons had a balanced attack, led by Emily Curry's 10 points and two steals. Bethany Murrell had seven points, four rebounds and three steals. Lauren Tieman also had seven points and four rebounds. Abby Seifert had a team-high five boards and Taylor Espich had three steals and a blocked shot.
Reasor had 18 points and Moore 13 to lead MV. Jessica Brown, the Marauders' leading scorer on the season, scored seven points.

Mt. Vernon is 7-2 overall and 4-0 in HHC play, and next plays at home Thursday, 12/22 vs. Franklin.  The Dragons are now 3-6 and 2-2 in HHC play. They travel to Yorktown on Saturday for a 6 p.m. JV start.

You can go to HancockCountySports.com to listen to the archive, and also log in on Friday at 5:40 p.m. for girls and boys hoops, with Eastern Hancock hosting Knightstown.

Swimming
The New Palestine girls basketball team fell to Mt. Vernon 49-31 at home on Thursday night.

The Dragons fell behind 9-2 after a quarter, but climbed back into the game and stayed within contact of the third-ranked Marauders for much of the night, but MV's inside tandem of Erica Moore and Makenzi Reasor helped MV pull away in the fourth quarter.

The Dragons are now 3-6 and 2-2 in HHC play. They travel to Yorktown on Saturday for a 6 p.m. JV start before taking a 10-day break prior to hosting Greenfield-Central in the Dec. 27 county tournament.

Swimming
The New Palestine and Mt. Vernon swim teams split a dual swim meet Thursday night. The New Palestine girls Mt. Vernon 101-85 on Thursday night, while the Marauder boys won 95-90.

"This was an exciting meet. This rivalry always bring out the best performances from both schools," NP coach Steve Maxwell said.

NPHS junior Emily Trimpe set a school record in the 100 freestyle, a time of 55.64 leading a 1-2 finish for the Dragons. Other winners for the girls were Jordan Rogers in the 200 IM (the sixth-best performance in NP history), Karen Emminger in the 50 freestyle and Trimpe again in the 100 breaststroke. The Dragons also won the 200 free relay with Trimpe, Jordan Rogers, Emminger and Olivia Ayer; and the 400 free relay with Rogers, Emminger, Katie Mustard and Trimpe.

Mt. Vernon winners were Eve Gonzales in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, Lauren Reifel leading a 1-2-3 finish in diving, Maddie Powell in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke and the 200 medley relay team of Jessica Hantz, Ellen Werner, Powell and Jessica Blackburn.

In the boys meet, Mt. Vernon winners were David Cochran in diving, Drew Logan in the 500 freestyle, David Hantz in the 100 backstroke, Kenny Gilpin in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 medley relay team of Hantz, Gilpin, Ian Hanssen and Reid Eberhard

The Dragons saw Jake Grieg swim the second-fastest time in school history in winning the 200 freestyle, teaming up with Grant Gish for a 1-2 finish. Greig and Gish also finished 1-2 in the 50 freestyle. Sam Baker won the 100 freestyle and 200 IM, Luke Steigerwalt took the 100 butterfly -- with Klay Simmons finishing second. Greig, Gish, Simmons and Baker won the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay.
"We had our best 'team performance' of the season," NP coach Steve Maxwell said. "We've had good individual swims in all our meets, but this was good across the board."

Basketball weekend

Lots of basketball this weekend starts tonight, with a BIG girls game between New Palestine and 3A No. 3 Mt. Vernon.

The Dragons are 3-5 against a top-25 schedule, but could easily be 7-1 as four of their losses have been in down-to-the-wire games. The Marauders are 6-2, with both defeats to 4A programs having strong years. The game features four players who will be playing at the next level next year -- MV's Makenzi Reasor (Indiana State) and Jessica Brown (Indiana Wesleyan) along with NP's Bethany Murrell (Florida Gulf Coast) and Tori Stephenson (Danville Area CC).

The game also features two of the area's top rebounders in NP's Lauren Tieman and Abby Seifert -- the latter of which is averaging more than 10 rebounds per game -- and MV's Reasor and Anna Olson. Both teams are senior-laden, and this could be the final meeting for these teams as currently constituted.

The other big key is the HHC race. MV can take a full-game lead on the conference going into the Christmas break with games remaining against Delta, Greenfield-Central and Shelbyville. Should the Dragons win, it would forge a 4-way tie at the top of the conference, with tonight's two participants, G-C and Pendleton Heights -- who are both 3-1 in league play.

You can listen to the game live tonight with Chris Lambert and Greg Elkins on HancockCountySports.com. Direct listen live link here.

Knightstown at Eastern Hancock: More hoops on Friday, with the Royals and Panthers facing off in a doubleheader. First, let's look at the boys. EH is 3-2, and is two baskets away from being a perfect 5-0 on the year. Knightstown is 1-4, as both teams are retooling a bit after graduating strong senior classes last season. Victor Vincz had 27 points in EH's 68-53 victory over Sheridan on Saturday. He and Jared Pyle lead EH in scoring. Knightstown has a young team led by Clay Ratliff, who is nearly averaging a double-double.

On the girls side, EH is 6-1, enjoying its best start in years, led by sophomore guard Kiersten Schrope, who has scored, rebounded and handled the ball for the Royals. Sophomore Kristen Eischen does a lot of the work up front. But Knightstown poses a tough test. The Panthers are experienced, with four players averaging between 9-11 points per game, and they are coming off a victory over New Castle last week. Knightstown is 5-3.

Listen to both games starting at 5:40 p.m. Friday at HancockCountySports.com

Other games
Friday boys
Morristown at New Palestine, 7:30: Another installment in Hancock County's longest-running basketball series -- the two teams have played each other annually since at least the 1940s, and likely longer. The Dragons have dominated the series recently, and have a deep, senior-laden team that's 3-1 on the year. Morristown does feature one of the state's top scorers in Dylan Langkabel, who is headed to Northwood University in Michigan to play next year. Expect a good matchup.

Shelbyville at Mt. Vernon, 7:30: The Marauders are 2-2, but are ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by the Sagarin ratings. MV has played four tough opponents so far, so the winless Golden Bears (0-4) could be a good opportunity for the Marauders to get a lift going into the county tournament. Our friends at WSVX (www.wsvx.com) will broadcast the game.

Yorktown at Greenfield-Central, 7:30: Yorktown is 1-0 in HHC play and 2-2 overall since Greg Miller returned to the head coaching reins. The Tigers have been building for some time. The Cougars are 0-6 on the year and have struggled to score points, but have done so against a brutally-difficult schedule and with a very young, sophomore-laden team. Our friends at WRGF-89.7 will broadcast.

Saturday boys

Eastern Hancock at Cambridge City Lincoln, 7:30: This game could be a good matchup, as the Golden Eagles are experienced and playing at home. CCL is 2-2 on the year under coach Rodney Klein.

New Palestine at Franklin Central, 7:30: The Dragons and Flashes resume their series after a long hiatus. And it happens without legendary FC coach Mark James on the sidelines, as he took his boots to Ben Davis. The Flashes are 3-2 under new coach John Rockey, and are coming off big wins over Columbus North and Fishers. This could be a preview of the Center Grove sectional. A student broadcast is available at WRFT-91.5.

Saturday girls
Eastern Hancock at Northeastern, 1:30: The Royals will have a quick turnaround, playing Saturday afternoon after a Friday-night game, which will be good prep for the county tournament. Northeastern comes in with a 2-7 record.

New Palestine at Yorktown, 7:30: The Dragons go on the road for the first time since before Thanksgiving with their final conference matchup before the county tournament. Yorktown graduated the bulk of a core that had been together for four years and is starting over with new coach Lendon Schwartz. The Tigers are 4-4, but are 0-2 in HHC play so far.

Wednesday wrap: G-C wrestlers win

On the night Gordon Nesbit was inducted into the Greenfield-Central wrestling Hall of Fame, the Cougar wrestlers defeated Speedway 55-15 at home Wednesday.

G-C's JV also won 51-6.

No varsity individual results were provided, but the Cougars are now 9-2 on the year.

Now 7-3, the Cougars next play Dec. 20 at home against Connersville. Richmond falls to 5-4.

The game was close throughout -- EH led 10-9 after a quarter, trailed 20-18 at halftime and 32-31 at the end of three.

Lapel fell to 3-4 with the loss.

Junior Michael Morris kick-started the Dragons in the second quarter, scoring 12 points in the frame en route to a 16-point night on 6-of-7 shooting. Three Dragons named IFCA All-State

Three members of New Palestine's HHC champion football team were named to the Indiana Football Coaches Association All-State team this week.

Quarterback Connor Simmons and WR/DBs Brandon Collins and Josh Penley were named to the IFCA Class 4A team. Collins was named to the team as a wide receiver, Penley as a defensive back.

For Collins and Penley, it's their second All-State selection and makes them consensus All-State picks. Both were also selected to the Associated Press All-State team, as selected by the state media, last week. The IFCA team is selected by the coaches. Greenfield-Central's Matt Dickerson was also selected to the AP All-State team last week.

Collins set the New Palestine single-season and career receptions record this season with 60 catches, 923 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. His 923 yards comprise the biggest season ever by a New Palestine receiver, and his 60 season catches and 76 career catches are both school records. Collins is also second on New Palestine's career receiving yardage list behind 1993 graduate Jay Ehle with 1,141 career yards.

He also had six interceptions, an interception return for a touchdown and two fumble recoveries as a defensive back. On offense, Penley had 883 receiving yards and 17 receiving touchdowns this season, setting the school touchdown receptions record with 17 for the season and 20 for his career.

Simmons also rewrote the New Palestine football record book, completing 174 passes for for 2,795 yards and 35 touchdowns this year. He broke the New Palestine single-season and career records for completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns, all of which had previously been held by either Mark Shepler since 1987 or Matt Rodgers since 1993. He holds the career records for passing yards (3,289), completions (212) and passing touchdowns (39). He completed 64 percent of his passes this season and ranked among the state leaders in passing yards and touchdowns this season. He also twice broke the single-game passing touchdowns record with five TD passes.

Together, they helped lead the Dragons to a 10-1 record, a second straight Hoosier Heritage Conference championship, an HHC-record 20-game winning streak in conference games, the No. 1 ranking in the AP Class 4A poll at the end of the season and the school's first unbeaten regular season since 1988.

Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central both fell at home to strong programs Friday night, seeing some outstanding individual performances.

HSE would use a relentless defense to extend it from there.

Irvin -- a 6-7 junior guard headed to Michigan -- had a game-high 18. Guard Jacobby Bledsoe scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers. HSE's Paul Furlin also hit double-figures.
