Friday night wrapup

The final two weeks of the HHC are set up beautifully, as New Palestine, Greenfield-Central and Pendleton Heights are in a three-way race for the conference championship. .

In our broadcast, the Cougars and Mt. Vernon were locked in a 0-0 tie through four quarters, as the defenses absolutely dominated. The teams' big-play players -- G-C's Matt Dickerson and MV's Tyler Dicks -- were slowed by some great linebacking corps. Dickerson had 31 rushing yards. Dicks had 51 on 21 carries.

Matter of fact, neither offense got too untracked. G-C had 155 yards of offense, MV had 138 -- including 121 in the second half. Neither team got inside the other's 15. In the second half, the Cougars drove to the MV 17 in the third, but was stopped on fourth-and-1. The Marauders drove inside the Cougar 20, but had a field goal blocked. Neither team threatened after that, but G-C's Derek Conley had two interceptions in regulation to thwart Marauder drives.

In the third quarter, the Cougars found something with a wildcat offense quarterbacked by Conley -- which proved effective in moving the ball. They went back to it in OT. On its possession, MV tried a halfback pass, but Brant Boles picked it off in the end zone for the Cougars' fourth takeaway of the night. On the Cougars' possession, Conley took the direct snap and carried behind the left side of the line for seven yards on first down, then bounced outside on the next play to score the game's only TD and give the Cougars a 6-0 victory in overtime.

It was G-C's fourth straight victory on the year, and the Cougars' fourth victory over Mt. Vernon in the last five meetings between the schools -- two of which have been decided in OT.

Both teams are now 5-2 overall. G-C is 4-1 in the HHC and tied with Pendleton Heights for second, MV is 3-2 and in fourth place.

New Palestine 49, Shelbyville 13: The Golden Bears had a long run and an early TD, but the Dragons' defense turned two early Shelbyville fumbles into Connor Simmons touchdown passes and NP poured it on. Simmons threw four more TD passes to up his season total to 22. Brandon Collins and Josh Penley -- two of the state's leading receivers -- each caught a TD pass again and Austin Monday ran in a couple. The No. 1 Dragons are now 7-0 for the first time since 1992 and lead the HHC by a full game over G-C and PH.

Eastern Hancock 27, Wes-Del 6: The Royals got their running game going to get that second victory that had eluded them for weeks. EH has a tough test next week, traveling to unbeaten Shenandoah.

And in the HHC
Pendleton Heights 31, Yorktown 7: Coach John Broughton gets victory No. 200 in the Arabians' victory. One of the really great coaches in East Central Indiana, Coach Broughton's teams have really turned it on the last couple of years -- 16-4 in the last two seasons. The Arabians are now 6-1 (4-1) and tied with G-C for second place in the conference. They will face Rushville next week before hosting G-C in Week 9.

Delta 48, Rushville 22: The Eagles got their offense going in a big way in a victory over Rushville. Delta gets that elusive second conference win. The Eagles are now 2-3 in HHC play and in fifth place and 2-5 overall (4-3 overall on the field). Rushville is 2-5/0-5.

Friday night football

Another big night as the HHC race hits the homestretch of the season. Two of the four teams in the thick of the race face off as the Greenfield-Central Cougars host the Mt. Vernon Marauders.

Mt. Vernon (5-1/3-1) at Greenfield-Central (4-2/3-1): Kickoff is 7 p.m. Join Andrew, Mike and Chris for the pregame at 6:30 p.m. from G-C's Cougar Stadium. Listen LIVE link. The Marauders feature the county's top rusher in Tyler Dicks (728 yards in 5 games). He had 126 yards and two touchdowns (and an interception) in the 20-5 victory over Shelbyville last week. G-C is on a three-game win streak, and a big reason why is the return game. The Cougars have six return touchdowns in the last two weeks. Matt Dickerson leads an athletic group of Cougars. The winner stays in the HHC race. The team that is unsuccessful will need some help.

Shelbyville (1-5/1-3) at #1/4 New Palestine (6-0/4-0): The Dragons have one of the state's most potent passing attacks, with 1,500-yard passer Connor Simmons throwing to 500-yard receivers Josh Penley and Brandon Collins. The Dragons' defense has also been solid. Shelby has struggled, but the Bears moved the ball for the last couple of weeks, but struggled to finish drives. The Bears have shown huge strides and can play spoiler. Our friends at WSVX.com will have the broadcast.

Wes-Del (0-6) at Eastern Hancock (1-5): The Royals have been *just* close the last several weeks, but the homestretch hasn't been kind. Tonight, they host winless Wes-Del in Senior Night. The Royals are much better than 1-5 -- they get a chance to show it here.

Also in the HHC
#10/9 Pendleton Heights (5-1/3-1) at Yorktown (3-3/1-3): The Arabians have had two 100-yard rushers in the last two weeks in Jacob Lyons and Jon Furrow. Throw in a veteran line and QB Mitch Patishall, and PH is a solid team. Yorktown has big-play capability led by Brendon Barnes, and the Tigers have been right there.

Rushville (2-4/0-4) at Delta (1-5/1-3): Delta is actually 3-3 on the field, but the Eagles have dropped three straight after beating Greenfield-Central to open the HHC season. Ozzie Mann is strong, but the Eagles miss Austin Fuatavai at RB. Rushville has allowed 42, 53 and 49 points the last three weeks, but all to top HHC contenders. The Lions have a sold running game led by Kaleb Lambert and Garrett Hittle, but they are young.

Poll time: Dragons ranked No. 1 by AP

Class 4A's top football team resides in the southwestern corner of Hancock County.

Armed with a passing attack that has rolled up more than 1,500 yards in six games, the New Palestine Dragons are Class 4A's No. 1 team, according to the Associated Press media poll.

The poll was released earlier this evening and the Dragons vaulted both Cathedral and Evansville Reitz -- which dropped games over the weekend -- into the top spot.

The AP poll is voted on by a panel of media members in the state.

The Dragons are also No. 4 in the Indiana Football Coaches Association poll and No. 3 in the Sagarin computer rankings. Fellow HHC rival Pendleton Heights is also ranked in both polls -- No. 10 by the AP and No. 9 by the IFCA. The Dragons defeated PH 34-21 in Week 3 to open conference play, handing the Arabians their only loss of the season.

New Palestine quarterback Connor Simmons ranks fourth in the state in passing yards with 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns. With 562 receiving yards and 13 TDs, wideout Josh Penley ranks eighth in receiving yards, while running mate Brandon Collins is 11th with 540 yards.

The No. 1 ranking is indicative of the Dragons' hottest start since 1992, when the team started with seven straight victories.

The Dragons won their 17th straight HHC game and 14th straight regular season game. With the victory, they retained possession of the Helmet. In three seasons under head coach Tim Able, the Dragons are 25-5 overall, 17-1 in HHC play and 15-0 at Kelso Stadium.

New Palestine will host Senior Night this week against Shelbyville (1-5, 1-3 HHC), then travel to face county rivals Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon in the season's final two weeks.

Saturday morning QB: It's a four-way race

It's a four-way race in the Hoosier Heritage Conference, and the three Hancock County teams are in the thick of it, along with neighboring Pendleton Heights. Meanwhile, county neighbor Eastern Hancock is on the cusp, but dropped its third straight close game Friday night.

Let's look at the games:
Mt. Vernon 20, Shelbyville 5: A defensive struggle between the two schools that MV broke open with three big offensive plays -- Tyler Dicks' 26-yard TD run that was set up by a long 25-yard pass to Corey White in the first quarter, White's 53-yard TD catch in the third and a 65-yard run by Dicks that ended the game in the fourth. The entire second half was played in Marauder territory, but MV's defense held despite being backed up to the wall, producing six turnovers, including five interceptions. Other than a fumble on Shelby's second play of the game, each turnover happened in Marauder territory, including a Trey Wood interception in the end zone. Wood, Harrison Bova, Brandon Lockart, Tyler Dicks and Cody Baker all had interceptions for the Marauders. Dicks had 126 yards rushing. MV is now +17 in giveaway/takeaway ratio, and Dicks has 726 rushing yards in five games -- closing in on the 1,000-yard mark. MV played without Anthony Burnett, who was out with an apparent leg injury. Next up for the Marauders -- a visit to rival Greenfield-Central.

Tyler Walden also had a touchdown reception -- his second in as many weeks -- and Austin Monday and backup QB Blake Luker had rushing touchdowns. Simmons' three passing touchdowns gave him 13 for the season. Simmons threw for 202 yards, half of which went to Penley. Brendon Barnes' 62-yard TD run was Yorktown's offensive highlight. The Dragons host Shelbyville for senior night next week.

Matt Dickerson also scored three touchdowns to give G-C an early 21-6 lead.

Week 6: HHC showdowns set

In our pregame column, we mentioned tonight as the night when the top half of the HHC played the bottom half, and things would either sort themselves out into a 4-team race, or an upset or two could completely rearrange things.

The top four teams all won, setting up a really nice showdown at the top of the HHC that will be sorted out pretty quickly.

In our broadcast, Mt. Vernon's defense produced six turnovers to beat Shelbyville 20-5. It was a defensive slugfest that Tyler Dicks broke through on twice -- first to give MV the lead, second to ice the game.

But the big story was the Marauders' defense. In the first half, Shelbyville had the upper hand field position-wise, but the Marauders managed to keep the Golden Bears out of the end zone despite two different first-and-goal situations. On the first, MV held the Bears to a field goal -- which was immediately answered by a 67-yard TD drive that ended in Dicks' 26-yard run. On the second, Trey Wood intercepted a pass in the end zone that preserved a 7-3 edge at halftime.

When Jordan Miller hit Corey White in stride with a 53-yard TD pass in the third quarter, it appeared MV's 13-3 lead would be hard to overcome. But Shelbyville started to win the battle of field position -- pinning MV inside its 10, then the Marauders would punt it back out to the 40, and repeat for several straight punts. MV flinched first, taking a safety when Miller slipped in the end zone. That made it 13-5 -- a one-score game.

But MV's defense produced three straight interceptions on Shelbyville's last three possessions -- including one on the final play of the game -- to end it. Dicks iced it with a 65-yard run around right end in the final three minutes, giving him 126 for the night.

MV is 5-1/3-1. Shelby is 1-5/1-3.

The Marauders visit Greenfield-Central in our Game of the Week broadcast on www.hancockcountysports.com. Airtime is 6:30 p.m.

Also tonight:
New Palestine 49, Yorktown 14: The Dragons kept rolling, showing why they have a No. 3 ranking in Class 4A and are tops in the HHC with a 6-0/3-0 record.

Scott Lyons ran the opening kickoff back 90 yards for a TD. Josh Penley caught two TD passes and ran an interception back for another. The Dragons rolled again ahead of next week's home game against Shelbyville.

Greenfield-Central 49, Rushville 12: Matt Dickerson had three early TDs to give the Cougars a victory. G-C never trailed and is playing some strong football ahead of next week's showdown with county rival Mt. Vernon on www.hancockcountysports.com. Cougars are now 4-2/3-1. Rushville is 2-4/0-4.

Football Friday

We're excited to bring you a big football Friday tonight. The four teams in the top half of the HHC face the four teams with 1-2 or 0-3 marks, so an upset tonight could completely shake up the conference race or get a squad back into it.

Listen to our broadcast of the Mt. Vernon-Shelbyville game to get updates on ALL of the HHC action tonight.

We will be at Mt. Vernon (4-1/2-1) at Shelbyville (1-4/1-2): The Golden Bears moved the ball last week against G-C but turnovers and special teams play turned the tide. Shelbyville gave up three return touchdowns. MV struggled to move the ball against Pendleton Heights and is looking to bounce back after a 38-6 defeat to one of the team's arch-rivals. This is a big game to set up the final third of the season for both teams. Tyler Dicks (97 yards last week, 150 ypg for the year) is MV's leading rusher. MV is +11 in turnover ratio, which could be big tonight. Airtime with Andrew Smith and Mike Jackson is 6:30 p.m.

Also tonight
#3/5 New Palestine (5-0/3-0) at Yorktown (3-2/1-2): The Dragons have been on a roll both offensively and defensively. NP has scored 34, 31 and 53 points in its three conference games, and pitched its first shutout of the year last week against Rushville. QB Connor Simmons has thrown for more than 1,300 yards and 15 TDs in five weeks. He has had two five-touchdown pass games. Yorktown had four interceptions of Delta QB Ozzie Mann last week, and turned four big plays into touchdowns. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. from Yorktown. Listen to our broadcast for frequent updates tonight.

Greenfield-Central (3-2/2-1) at Rushville (2-3/0-3): The Cougars' defense and special teams have been huge throughout their renaissance the last couple of years. Last week, Matt Dickerson ran the opening kickoff for a TD, ran back an interception for a touchdown and blocked a punt that teammate Jeremiah Wray scooped up and ran into the end zone. Meanwhile, Rushville's young squad showed some good signs in a 42-14 loss to Mt. Vernon a couple of weeks ago, especially the running of RB Garrett Hittle. The Cougars will be heavy favorites in this one. We'll give frequent updates, and our friends at WRGF-89.7 and WIFE-94.3 will have the call.

Delta (1-4/1-2) at #10 (AP) Pendleton Heights (4-1/2-1): PH has shown the total package this year -- a balanced running game led by Jon Furrow and Jacob Lyons and a strong passing game riding the arm of three-year starter Mitch Patishall. The Arabians have been an offensive machine, scoring at least 21 points in each game, and at least 38 in all four of its victories. At 44 ppg, PH ranks No. 3 in scoring. Yet, Delta has a strong attack led by QB Ozzie Mann and RB Landon Lambert. The Eagles are actually 3-2 on the field, and suffered turnover issues in last week's loss to Yorktown. The week before, they and New Palestine had a back-and-forth game that ended up going the Dragons' way in the fourth quarter. This might be the game of the night in the HHC. We'll be giving frequent updates on our broadcasts. Our friends at 91.7 WEEM-Pendleton will also have the call.

In Hancock County
Eastern Hancock (1-4/1-3 MIFC) at North Decatur (1-4/0-2 MIFC): The Royals travel on the road having lost two VERY close games the last two weeks to Milan and Knightstown. EH has shown it's close to breaking through and tonight could propel them into a final third of the season that includes games against winless Wes-Del and Edinburgh -- as well as one against powerful Shenandoah.

Thursday wrap: Marauders knock PH from HHC lead

Entering tonight, Pendleton Heights was in a three-way tie for first place in HHC boys soccer in the loss column.

But Mt. Vernon had something to say about that.

The Marauders beat PH 3-1 tonight on the road, thanks to two first-half goals from Eric Ahonen.

MV never trailed from that point on. Kyle Cansler assisted on Ahonen's first goal. The second was unassisted. PH scored in the second half, but MV answered with a goal by Mouhamed Konate, assisted by Cansler and Adam Luke.

Corban Hartley made four saves in net.

MV is now 8-3-3 and 4-3 in HHC play. PH is 3-2 in conference play with two games remaining. Greenfield-Central and New Palestine remain co-leaders in the conference with one league loss each.

MV hosts Fishers at noon Saturday.

Boys tennis
Lawrence North 3, Mt. Vernon 2: MV got wins from No. 2 singles Kendall Ryan (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) and No. 2 doubles Corey Beck/Ben Bobb (6-2, 6-3) in the loss to its MIC neighbor to the west.

Boys soccer
HSE 1, New Palestine 0: The Dragon boys soccer team fell to Hamilton Southeastern 1-0 Thursday night at home.

The Royals' Connor Swafford scored the game's lone goal in the first half. Two HSE goalkeepers shared the shutout.

NP coach Bobby Holden said Matt Ernster played a strong game for the Dragons, who are now 8-5-0 on the season with three games remaining.

"We need to have better starts to our games," Holden said.

Wednesday wrap: Dragons go OT to clinch HHC title

Lindsay Meyer scored with 4:50 left the second overtime to break a scoreless tie and give the 13th-ranked New Palestine girls soccer team a thrilling 1-0 victory over Pendleton Heights Wednesday evening in Pendleton.

Meyer's goal came on a feed from Kristin Wagner in the closing minutes of the 14-minute overtime period. It kept the Dragons unbeaten on the year, now 12-0-2, and clinched at least a share of the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship.

Holly Hilton made two saves for the Dragons in goal for her 10th shutout of the year and extended her school record with 39 career shutouts. NP outshot the Arabians 8-2 and dominated time of possession.

With a 6-0 HHC record, the Dragons can clinch the title outright Monday at home against Shelbyville. The Senior Night contest will begin at 5:30 p.m. Before then, the Dragons will host Lawrence Central Saturday afternoon.

Mt. Vernon 6, Rushville 0: Mt. Vernon's soccer team beat Rushville 6-0 as Kristina Voltz scored her second straight three-goal hat trick.

Chelsea Thomas added a goal and two assists. Suzy DeWael had a goal and an assist, while Jordan Slusher scored the Marauders' other goal. Lauren Bradburn, Haley White and Shaley Duff also had assists for the Marauders, who are now 9-2-1 and 4-1 in HHC play. Whitney Estes had the shutout in goal.

The Marauders meet Delta Saturday at home.

Boys soccer
Yorktown 2, Greenfield-Central 1: We expected a tough HHC race involving several teams. That's exactly what we've had this season. Several games between top teams have gone to OT, shootouts and have been one-goal thrillers.

Tonight, Greenfield-Central fell to Yorktown 2-1 at home, denying the Cougars a chance to clinch at least a tie for the conference title. That moves G-C, New Palestine and Pendleton Heights into a first-place tie in the loss column, as each team has one HHC defeat.

The Cougars (10-3-1, 5-1) have one conference game remaining -- Sept. 29 at Rushville. Should G-C win that, the Cougars will clinch a piece of the conference title. New Palestine is 4-1 in conference play, with a road game Saturday at Delta and a home game Sept. 29 against Pendleton Heights. PH is just 3-1 in HHC play, and has three conference games left -- hosting Mt. Vernon Thursday, Shelbyville on Sept. 27 and the aforementioned visit to New Palestine.  Yorktown is in fourth place with two conference defeats to date.

Boys tennis
Mt. Vernon 5, Rushville 0: The Marauders posted a Senior Night sweep to move to 10-6 on the season.

"Shelby Davis did a great job in set No. 4 and took charge of the net in the middle," G-C coach Rita Rouse said, while also citing the play of Pope, Bunch and Sosnowski. Bunch's nine kills and Sosnowski's 21 digs are career highs.

G-C plays Scecina Thursday.

New Palestine 3, Morristown 0: The Dragons posted a straight-set victory over Morristown, winning 25-9, 25-23, 25-10. NP is now 16-6 headed into a Thursday match against Pike. EH's next best score after Boaz was a 118 from Rachel Boaz.

Girls soccer
New Palestine 3, Delta 0: NP outshot the Eagles 17-1 and took the lead just 6:25 into the game, when Lindsay Meyer's shot gave the Dragons a 1-0 edge on Lindsey Kehrt's assist. It proved to be the game-winner. Lauren Joray scored her team-high 10th goal in the first half on Morgan Parish's assist. Kalli Shepler-Tucker added an insurance goal 9:03 into the second half when she cashed in a corner kick that began with Morgan Carpenter's boot, which Meyer redirected to Shepler-Tucker.

Holly Hilton made one save to preserve yet another shutout for the Dragons, who are 10-0-2 and 5-0 in the HHC. They play two games next week -- at home against Franklin at 5:30 p.m. Monday, which is also Doe Creek Night -- and at Pendleton Heights at 7 p.m. Wednesday. PH is also unbeaten in conference play. A Dragon victory would clinch at least a share of the league title.

Mt. Vernon 2, Marion 0: Taylor Gutierrez scored in the first half on an assist from Kristina Voltz, which proved to be the game-winner for the Marauders on the road. Voltz scored in the second half on a feed from Jordan Slusher to provide the final margin. Olivia Coleman made four saves to record the shutout for MV (7-2-1, 3-1 HHC).

Saturday morning QB: Look back at Friday night

An interesting night in the HHC. Pendleton Heights makes a big statement. New Palestine flexes its muscles and claims sole possession of first place. And Yorktown picks Delta off four times in an upset.

Here's a look back in our weekly Saturday Morning QB roundup:

Pendleton Heights 38, Mt. Vernon 6: The Arabians doubled up No. 10 MV in yardage, but turned the game late in the first half with 14 points in the last 2:06. An interception deep in Arabian territory by Chandler Wilson turned into a touchdown, then QB Mitch Patishall threw deep to Jacob Lyons on the final play of the half. Lyons had a rushing and receiving TD, Jon Furrow had two rushing TDs, both had 100 yards on the ground and Patishall threw for 134 yards and two scores. PH has now scored at least 38 points in all four of its wins, and is in a second-place tie with Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central at 2-1 in the HHC. Both teams are 4-1. MV plays at Shelbyville next week in our Hancock County Game of the Week broadcast.
Daily Reporter | Indianapolis Star | Anderson Herald-Bulletin | Broadcast archive

New Palestine 53, Rushville 0: The Dragons, ranked No. 4 (AP) and No. 7 (IFCA) in Class 4A, showed why Friday night. NP scored 40 first-half points and Connor Simmons threw five touchdown passes. Matt Siergiej and Austin Monday rushed for a combined 200 yards, with Monday scoring twice and Siergiej totaling 105 yards and scoring once. Simmons was 8-of-11 for 297 yards and threw two TDs each to Josh Penley (66 & 1 yards) and Brandon Collins (28 & 16 yards) and an 85-yard TD pass to Tyler Walden. NP is now 5-0/3-0. Rushville is 2-3/0-3.
Daily Reporter

Greenfield-Central 36, Shelbyville 13: The Cougars' Matt Dickerson scored two early TDs on returns -- one on the opening kickoff, another on an interception -- to lead the Cougars early in what would become a rout. G-C had three touchdowns on returns, as Dickerson's blocked punt led to a TD by Jeremiah Wray late in the game. The Cougars forced five turnovers.
Daily Reporter | Shelbyville News

Knightstown 20, Eastern Hancock 14: A late TD pass by Logan Gilbert brought the Royals close, then a blocked punt gave them a chance to win. But the Panthers forced a fumble and held on to beat EH and retain possession of the Plow Share and Anvil Trophy. Knightstown's Wing-T offense gained 361 rushing yards. Gilbert threw two TD passes for EH, which has dropped two close games in a row and is now 1-4. Knightstown -- in its first year under the tutelage of Mt. Vernon graduate Patrick Mallory -- is 3-2.
Daily Reporter

And in the HHC:
Yorktown 28, Delta 14: Yorktown intercepted Delta QB Ozzie Mann four times and turned two of those picks into scores in an HHC upset. It was the Tigers' first victory over Delta in five years. Yorktown also had big plays on offense -- a 64-yard TD from Chandler Carroll, a 46-yard wide receiver pass to Jason Brown and an 86-yard TD run by Brendon Barnes to ice the game.

PH knocks MV from perch; NP/G-C win

Not many close games in the county tonight, as Pendleton Heights used a dominating performance from its offensive and defensive lines to beat Mt. Vernon 38-6 tonight.

The Arabians ran the ball for more than 258 yards and outgained MV 392-149. PH's Jacob Lyons and Jon Furrow both broke the 100-yard mark on the evening.

Everything started on the first drive, as MV was held to a three-and-out, punted to give the Arabians a short field and they continued to work the left side with Lyons and Furrow before Lyons carried it in from two yards out. A blocked punt set PH up at the Marauder 14, but MV held the Arabians to a field goal.

Trailing 10-0 late in the first half, things began to unravel for MV. The Marauders were in the midst of a strong five-minute drive that carried to the PH 20 after Tyler Dicks' 25-yard scamper around the right side -- one in which Furrow made a shoestring touchdown-saving tackle. Three plays later, PH's Chandler Wilson intercepted the Marauders. A 37-yard pass from Mitch Patishall to Kurt Talbert, followed by a 25-yard run by Lyons, gave the Arabians room for Furrow's second TD with 2:06 left. Suddenly, it was 17-0.

MV was forced to punt the ball to PH again, but with 26 seconds and one timeout, the Arabians were able to work the ball to midfield where Patishall found Lyons deep for a 46-yard touchdown on the first half's final play that sent them into the locker room up 24-0.

PH extended the lead from there, using its kicking game to pin MV inside its own 20 repeatedly, and then using the field position advantage to score -- Furrow ran in a 31-yard TD and Patishall hit Austin Coffel from 11 yards out. MV's defense forced a turnover late, and QB Jordan Miller threw a 17-yard TD pass to Anthony Burnett on the next play to get the Marauders on the board.

Dicks led MV offensively with 97 yards rushing on 26 carries.

Both teams are 4-1 and 2-1 in HHC play. But the game continues to make the HHC race interesting.

New Palestine 53, Rushville 0: This was never close -- NP had a 20-0 lead at the end of one, doubled the lead by halftime and kept adding on. No. 4 Dragons now 5-0 on the year and alone atop the HHC with a 3-0 record.

Greenfield-Central 36, Shelbyville 13: The Cougars got some big special-teams play, with a blocked punt turning into a touchdown in a homecoming victory. G-C now 3-2/2-1.

Knightstown 20, Eastern Hancock 14: The Panthers led throughout, although the game was always close. The Royals continue to show fourth-quarter strength, but Mt. Vernon graduate Pat Mallory's team improves to 3-2 while the Royals are now 1-4 with back-to-back close losses.

And in the HHC
Yorktown 28, Delta 14: No, not a misprint. Yorktown led throughout this one, spoiling Delta's return home. It's the Eagles' first HHC loss to a team besides New Palestine since 2008, and one of the biggest wins of young Tiger head coach Mike Wilhelm's career.

HHC standings
New Palestine 3-0/5-0
Mt. Vernon 2-1/4-1
Pendleton Heights 2-1/4-1
Greenfield-Central 2-1/3-2
Yorktown 1-2/3-2
Delta 1-2/1-4
Shelbyville 1-2/1-4
Rushville 0-3/2-3

Next week
Mt. Vernon at Shelbyville, 7 p.m. (www.hancockcountysports.com broadcast)
Greenfield-Central at Rushville, 7 p.m.

New Palestine at Yorktown, 7:30 p.m.
Delta at Pendleton Heights, 7:30 p.m.

Football night tonight!

It's a great night in Hancock County and throughout the state! All four local schools will have homecoming festivities this evening. We'll be at Mt. Vernon, but all four games involving county schools will be broadcast on local media.

Pendleton Heights (3-1/1-1) at Mt. Vernon (4-0/2-0): MV is ranked No. 10 by the IFCA, while PH is receiving votes from the AP. This is annually a great rivalry and a tremendous matchup between these two old rivals, and tonight looks like one of the top matchups in the series' history. Both teams are strong and in the thick of the HHC race. The last 16 games between them have been dead-even, including the two meetings they split last year. Both teams feature powerful running games, led by MV's Tyler Dicks and PH's Jacob Lyons. Should MV win, it will be 5-0 for the first time since 2004. Andrew Smith, Mike Jackson and Chris Lambert will be on-air with you starting at 7 p.m. on www.hancockcountysports.com

Rushville (2-2/0-2) at New Palestine (4-0/2-0): The Dragons have been strong this year, garnering a No. 4 ranking from the AP and a No. 7 mark from the IFCA. QB Connor Simmons broke the 1,000-yard mark for the season in last week's 31-20 victory over Delta. NP has won 15 straight HHC contests. Rushville is looking for its first league victory in its last 11 tries. The Lions are young, but have a strong RB/LB in Garrett Hittle, their leading rusher in last week's loss to Mt. Vernon. WIFE-94.3 in Rushville will broadcast the game (no web streaming). 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Shelbyville (1-3/1-1) at Greenfield-Central (2-2/1-1): Good matchup here. G-C has been solid this season, and was so in holding off Yorktown last week for a road conference victory. Two weeks ago, the Cougars took perennial HHC power Delta to the wire before falling 19-17. G-C has a diverse offense and a very strong defense. Shelby found its way in a 29-12 victory over Rushville, but the Golden Bears struggled last week against Pendleton Heights. 7 p.m. kickoff. Broadcast on WSVX-1520 (www.wsvx.com) or WRGF-89.7.

Knightstown (2-2) at Eastern Hancock (1-3): Two first-year coaches from strong programs -- K'town's Pat Mallory -- a Mt. Vernon grad who came over from Center Grove -- meets up with EH's Pat Echeverria, a former Pike assistant. The Panthers have won two straight, beating Wes-Del and North Decatur -- the latter by a 34-32 score last week. The Royals are 1-3, with a thrilling 20-8 victory over South Decatur in Week 2. Last week, EH hung tough but fell to Milan 13-10 on the road. The Royals will try to wrest the Plow Share and Anvil trophy for the first time since 2007. Broadcast with Bill Ludlow and Keith Meyers on www.hcsnradio.com beginning at 6:30 p.m. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

And in the HHC
Yorktown (2-2/0-2) at Delta (1-3/1-1): The Eagles have been strong, and rallied nicely from a two-score deficit to lead New Palestine 20-17 in the fourth quarter last week, but the Dragons rallied. QB Ozzie Mann is a Ball State recruit, but was held in check by the Dragons. Yorktown has hung tough against Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central, but dropped both games. The Tigers rallied with 14 points in the closing seconds last week to make things interesting in a 23-20 loss to G-C. They were tied with Mt. Vernon in the third quarter before the Marauders pulled away.

Next week (HHC & Hancock County)
Mt. Vernon at Shelbyville, 7 p.m. (broadcast: www.hancockcountysports.com)
Greenfield-Central at Rushville, 7 p.m.
Eastern Hancock at North Decatur, 7 p.m.

Thursday wrap: G-C wins soccer thriller

Our soccer Games of the Week tend to be great ones. Tonight might have been one of the biggest thrillers of all.

Greenfield-Central rallied three different times before pulling off a 3-2 victory over New Palestine on the seventh shooter of the PK shootout. Ross Morgan's goal came right after Collin Kleckner stopped NP's seventh shooter -- and was the Dragons' fourth straight miss of the shootout -- giving the Cougars a 4-3 edge in the seven-round shootout that had to go to sudden death. NP led 3-1 after three rounds, but a miss and a Kleckner save -- as well as goals by Jeremiah Spencer and Kleckner -- tied the shootout. Neither team scored in the sixth round. Both Kleckner and NP's Jaron Pridgen made two saves in the extra session.

NP led 1-0 after 10:11 on Dillon Pike's breakaway goal. It stayed that way until early in the second half, when Morgan cashed in a feed in the box from Angel Rodriguez in the 48th minute to make it 1-1. Bryson Basaran scored from the left side on a feed from Wes Fox -- his ninth goal of the year -- to give NP a 2-1 lead in the final nine minutes. But just 2:10 later, G-C's Trent Barnhart tied it up, again on a feed in the middle from Rodriguez.

NP had a 14-9 shot edge in regulation and the two overtimes, but Kleckner made seven saves to preserve the Cougars' eighth victory of the year.

The win also puts G-C in the Hoosier Heritage Conference driver's seat with a 4-0 record and possession of the Victory Bell. The Cougars still have Shelbyville, Yorktown and Rushville remaining in their conference slate. G-C is 8-2-1 on the year. NP is now 7-3 (2-1).

It was a thrilling game between two very evenly-matched teams that went down to the wire. Glad you could listen to us tonight! If not, go here for the archive.

The Cougars next play Saturday at Richmond, then meet Shelbyville (Monday) and Yorktown (Wednesday) next week. The Dragons host Yorktown in the completion of a game suspended by lighting on Aug. 18, then visit Center Grove Tuesday before returning home Thursday to face Hamilton Southeastern.

Also tonight,
Mt. Vernon 3, Lawrence North 1: The Marauders improved to 7-3-2 on the year with a victory against LN. Matt Powell scored a first-half goal, but the Wildcats tied it in the second. Wednesday wrap: Dragons beat G-C

The New Palestine girls soccer team gave head coach Dana Merrick a milestone victory tonight, beating Greenfield-Central 1-0.

Midway through the second half, New Palestine's Kalli Shepler-Tucker scored to give the Dragons the victory. It was her eighth goal of the season. The play began with a free kick by Lindsay Meyer, who fed Morgan Carpenter off the set piece. Carpenter then passed the ball to Shepler-Tucker for the goal.

Holly Hilton made three saves in the first half, and didn't see a shot on goal in the second half as the Dragon midfield and defense kept the play away from the net.

The victory was No. 200 in Merrick's career since soccer became an IHSAA-sanctioned sport in 1994. He coached NP's boys from 1994-2001 and won 76 games, and this is the 126th victory since he took over the NP girls program in 2003. Merrick also coached the NPHS boys as a club team from 1985-93.

The Dragons are now 9-0-2 and remain unbeaten in HHC play.

Dragons rally to beat Delta

Great game we had this afternoon -- befitting one between two ranked teams. #5 New Palestine won its 15th straight Hoosier Heritage Conference game today at Lucas Oil Stadium, beating #10 Delta 31-20.

NP trailed 20-17 early in the fourth, but a long drive that set up Connor Simmons' 1-yard TD run gave the Dragons the lead with 7:51 left. After Sam Wright forced a fumble, NP milked the clock and Simmons clinched it by hitting Josh Penley for a 4-yard TD in the corner of the end zone with 2:41 left to make it 31-20.

Simmons completed 17-of-23 passes for 245 yards, as he eclipsed the 200-yard mark for the fourth straight game. Brandon Collins caught eight passes for 126 yards, including a 38-yard TD with 9:52 left in the second that gave NP a 7-6 lead. His catches helped set up a 25-yard FG by Wes Fox just ahead of the halftime gun. Simmons hit Josh Penley from 24 yards out on the first drive of the second half to give the Dragons a 17-6 lead.

Penley had six catches for 94 yards, just shy of his third straight 100-yard game. His third-quarter TD was set up by a fake punt pass from Collins to Blake Luker that kept the drive going.

Delta answered with back-to-back TDs, before the Dragons put it away.

NP gained 328 yards of offense -- including 265 through the air. Junior Matt Siergiej led the Dragons' rushing attack with 68 yards on the ground. NP's defense held Delta to 227 total yards -- including a 5-of-12 performance and just 91 yards for Ball State recruit Ozzie Mann, the Eagles' outstanding QB.

NP's defense forced two turnovers -- Dakota Smith had an INT and Wright's forced that set up the final TD. Brandon Wiggins (8 tackles) and Chris Wolf (5 tackles, 1 sack) led the Dragons.

NP moves into a first-place tie with Mt. Vernon in the HHC, both with 4-0 records and 2-0 in the league. Delta (1-3/1-1) is in a four-way third-place tie with Pendleton Heights, Greenfield-Central and Shelbyville.

The Dragons return home next week to face Rushville (2-2/0-2) in homecoming (7:30 kickoff). Delta hosts Yorktown (2-2/0-2) in a 7 p.m. game.

Our broadcast next week will be a great HHC rivalry -- Pendleton Heights at Mt. Vernon. Join Andrew, Mike and Chris at 7 p.m. next Friday!

MV, G-C win tonight

Week 4 is 3/4 done in Hancock County and in the HHC after Friday action in the mist and dampness.

In our game, Mt. Vernon had an effort we described often as "workmanlike" in a 42-14 victory over Rushville. MV held Rushville to 186 total yards, while the Marauders gained 368. Anthony Burnett ran for 172 yards and a TD. Freshman Gabe Estes ran for 3 TDs. The Marauders were playing without RB Tyler Dicks. Also, Mitch Walrod started the game at QB and completed 5-of-8 passes and a TD to Corey White.

MV's defense was strong again -- +10 on the season after three takeaways (and one giveaway) tonight.

White took the opening kickoff to the Rushville 23, and while the Marauders didn't score on that possession, they used the ensuing field position to score four straight touchdowns with the ball only crossing midfield once. MV led 28-0 before the Lions' Clay Tressler threw a late TD pass in the first half, and then the Lions scored again on the first possession of the second. But from there, MV took advantage of the play of the night -- Burnett mishandled a punt snap, picked the ball up, outran several onrushing would-be punt blockers and dashed down the right sideline for 41 yards. That set up Estes' second TD of the night, and he would later add another.

MV is now 4-0/2-0 for the first time since 2006. Rushville is now 2-2/0-2.

Greenfield-Central 23, Yorktown 20: The Cougars built a 23-6 lead, but Yorktown came storming back with two TDs in the final 4:14. The Cougars were able to recover the last onside kick to run out the clock. Tyler Colclazier threw a TD pass, Jeremiah Wray ran for one and Derek Conley set up a FG with a long punt return. The Cougars are now 2-2/1-1. Yorktown is 2-2/0-2.

Milan 13, Eastern Hancock 10: The Royals trailed 7-0 for the first three quarters, but fell just short on the road. EH is now 2-2 -- all in the MIFC -- and heads out of conference for next week's game against Knightstown.

In the HHC: Pendleton Heights 55, Shelbyville 7: The Arabians bounced back nicely from last week's loss to New Palestine with a huge offensive night. PH has scored 48+ points in three of its four games this season. The Arabians are now 3-1/1-1, Shelby 1-3/1-1.

Of course, we conclude the week with a Saturday game. New Palestine vs. Delta, 11:30 a.m. our airtime from Lucas Oil Stadium. Kickoff is noon. Listen LIVE on www.hancockcountysports.com. After two weeks of conference play, there are only three teams in the HHC left with unblemished conference records -- Mt. Vernon, New Palestine and Delta. Two of them will be left as unbeatens after this game.

HHC standings so far
Mt. Vernon 2-0/4-0
New Palestine 1-0/3-0
Delta 1-0/1-2*(3-0 on field)
Pendleton Heights 1-1/3-1
Greenfield-Central 1-1/2-2
Shelbyville 1-1/1-3
Rushville 0-2/2/2
Yorktown 0-2/2-2

Friday night (and Saturday) football

First, our two broadcasts

Mt. Vernon (3-0/1-0) at Rushville (2-1/0-1), 7 p.m. Friday (broadcast: www.hancockcountysports.com, WIFE-94-3 maybe?). Mt. Vernon has a strong, deep offense with Tyler Dicks (300 yards two weeks ago, 150 last week) and Anthony Burnett carrying the mail and a lot of speed on the outside with Corey White, as well as a defense that's not allowing much to teams not named Marion. Rushville had a couple of nonconference wins and is looking to bounce back after last week's game against Shelby.

Delta (1-2/3-0 on the field/1-0) vs. New Palestine (3-0/1-0), noon Saturday at Lucas Oil (broadcast: www.hancockcountysports.com). Between them, these two teams are 30-2 the last two years in league play -- the "2" being games they've split against each other. Really looking forward to the QB play with Ozzie Mann and Connor Simmons, who have both thrown it really well this year. This could also be a preview of a sectional matchup -- in fact, there are *five* HHC teams in Sectional 13. Airtime at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on HancockCountySports.com.

Greenfield-Central (1-2/0-1) at Yorktown (2-1/0-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday (broadcast: WRGF-89.7). The Cougars are a bit snakebitten. They were in the game against Lebanon and saw it get away in the fourth on back-to-back pick-sixes. They had Delta on the ropes last week and a FG chance to take the lead in the fourth, but Delta then ran out the last eight minutes. Derek Conley's return to the lineup has been big for G-C, which already has two great athletes in Matt Dickerson and Brant Boles-Lattimore. Yorktown had a gritty win over Muncie South and a big one over Indy Northwest, but the Tigers have a lot of game experience. They showed it last week against MV before the Marauders pulled away late. That game was 14-14 for quite some time.

Eastern Hancock (1-2/1-2 MIFC) at Milan (2-1/1-0 MIFC), 7 p.m. Friday. The Royals had a big come-from-behind victory in Week 2 sandwiched against two very difficult games against stronger, bigger-school teams. Logan & Spencer Gilbert have been a nice 1-2 backfield punch for EH, but freshman Cooper Henderson stepped up last week as the Royals stayed in the game for a quarter and a half against a very talented 3A Indian Creek team.

And in the HHC:
Shelbyville (1-2/1-0) at Pendleton Heights (2-1/0-1), 7:30p.m. Friday (broadcast: WEEM-91.7, WSVX-1520). The Golden Bears bounced back from the Franklin debacle nicely with a strong start against Rushville. A Pat Parks-coached team won't be down long. Neither will a John Broughton-coached team -- Pendleton Heights has a loaded offense that has put up some big points this year. Even in last week's loss to New Palestine, the Arabians gained 300+ yards and moved the ball, but had a few drives stall out in NP territory. Mitch Patishall is one of the league's veteran QBs and Jon Furrow had a great rushing game last week.

Check out our Twitter feed for scores tonight and read tonight/tomorrow for more recaps! And, of course, listen LIVE on HancockCountySports.com.

Tuesday roundup: Several intra-county matchups

Girls soccer
New Palestine 3, Mt. Vernon 0: The Dragon girls soccer team improved to 7-0-2 on the year and 2-0 in HHC play after beating Mt. Vernon.

Kalli Shepler-Tucker scored unassisted at the 34:08 mark to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Lauren Joray added two second-half goals -- her seventh and eighth of the year -- to make it 3-0. She scored unassisted at 42:28 and then again on Richelle Dennison's assist at 63:57.

The Dragons continue conference play Thursday at Rushville. The varsity game will be played at 5 p.m. (note: this is a change from previous schedules). The games against Franklin and Shelbyville will also be 5 p.m. varsity kickoffs.

Boys soccer
New Palestine 3, New Castle 0: The Dragons' boys soccer team blanked New Castle tonight at home. John Ernster had a goal and two assists for the Dragons. Wes Fox also had a goal and an assist.

Ernster's goal gave NP a 1-0 lead at halftime. He assisted on both second-half tallies -- the one by Fox and one by younger brother Matt Ernster.

Jaron Pridgen had the shutout in goal for the Dragons.

"We need to take control of games quicker," NP coach Bobby Holden said. "The game seemed to go on and on before we could gain control of it. Second half is sometimes too late to start playing and we need to keep that in mind. I'm happy about the win, but the boys know they can start better."

The Dragons are also home Thursday against conference foe Shelbyville. NPHS is 5-1 on the year and 1-0 in HHC play.

Volleyball
New Palestine 3, Eastern Hancock 0: The Dragons improved to 8-2 on the season with a three-game sweep of Eastern Hancock. NP won 25-10, 25-17, 25-14. Lauren Tieman had eight kills and seven blocks for the Dragons.

The NPHS JV also won 25-20, 25-22. They next play Wednesday at Lutheran.

Zionsville 3, Mt. Vernon 0: The Marauders fell 25-11, 25-18, 25-17 to the Eagles on Tuesday night.

Boys tennis
Mt. Vernon 4, Greenfield-Central 1: The Marauders picked up an intra-county victory ahead of Friday's county tournament -- which will take place at MV's courts at 4:30 p.m.

Saturday evening QB

Usually, we have Saturday Morning QB bright and early for you. But some extenuating circumstances have turned it into Saturday Evening QB.

New Palestine 34, Pendleton Heights 21: In the game we broadcast, New Palestine's offense poured it on, with Connor Simmons throwing for 280+ yards and receivers Josh Penley and Brandon Collins both breaking the century mark and combining for 5 TD receptions. The Arabians also put up 300+ yards, but NP's defense was strong in its own end and produced three interceptions. NP's Tim Able still wants a bit more balance. PH notes an inadvertent whistle changes the game in the closing minutes, wiping off a touchdown. The end result is the Dragons are 3-0 heading into a matchup with Delta, which we'll have for you at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on HancockCountySports.com. PH is 2-1 (0-1)
