Dragons on to semistate

New Palestine won its fourth straight softball regional title tonight, beating South Dearborn in a one-game regional.

The Dragons won 13-5, but trailed 3-1 going into the top of the sixth. NP scored seven times in the sixth, and then added five more in the seventh to put the game away.

Audrey East was 2-for-4 and drove in three runs. Erin Lehman was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Clare Myers was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Lizzie Garrison had a double and two RBI. Markie Wood and Katie Prosser scored twice and drove in two.

Garrison also scattered 10 hits and allowed five earned runs in the pitching victory.

First pitch is 11 a.m. No. 4 Roncalli will face No. 10 Edgewood in the other semifinal. Title game is slated for 7 p.m.

Maruders win 6-3

For those who weren't able to listen, Mt. Vernon won tonight's sectional championship with a 6-3 victory over No. 2 New Palestine.

Zach McKinney had the big blow for MV -- a three-run homer in the third to straightaway centerfield in the third that broke a 1-1 tie. MV added another run on Zach McFarland's RBI double in the inning, and Troy Montgomery hit a solo homer in the sixth to provide a key insurance run.

Logan Blair scattered 10 hits to get the pitching victory. He is now 8-2 on the year. NP got on the board early on David Gunst's solo homer in the top of the first, but the Dragons couldn't get the deficit below three after McKinney's homer -- Gunst singled and scored in the fifth, and doubled and scored in the seventh. Blair worked himself out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth to preserve the four-run lead.

Track and field: G-C's Dickerson, Sosnowski to state

Greenfield-Central athletes Matt Dickerson and Chris Sosnowski are moving on to the IHSAA track and field State Finals after their performances in Thursday's Connersville regional.

Dickerson will be moving on in both hurdles races, while Sosnowski was the regional champion in the discus.

Dickerson, a junior, finished second in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.20, three-tenths behind champion Adarius Washington of Warren Central (14.88). In the 300 hurdles, Dickerson was third by an eyelash, coming across in a virtual tie with runner-up Center Grove's Conner Stapleton, whose time of 39.586 was three-thousandths faster than Dickerson's time.

In the discus, Sonsowksi's second throw cleared 152-8, and that put him ahead of Greenwood's Brandon Rice, who threw 152-0 on his first throw. Those would hold up, as Sosnowski beat Rice by eight inches.

Thursday roundup: MV baseball moves on

Friday night roundup

What a wild night we had at New Palestine. Chris Lambert and I were glad so many of you joined us for some great offensive baseball. In two games, we saw 45 runs scored against two teams with some pretty good pitching. The offenses were on.

In the first game, New Palestine clinched the HHC title outright with an 11-4 victory over Mt. Vernon. MV led 4-3 in the fifth on Jon Michael Weaver's two-run single up the middle, but NP answered with eight runs in the sixth -- all with two outs -- as they put together seven hits and mixed in a couple of walks. Jacob Barnes' bases-clearing double capped off the inning, but four straight two-out RBI hits after the Dragons tied the game at 4-4 helped break things open. Nick Smith threw a complete game for the victory.

In game 2, the Dragons' bats came out hot, scoring five runs in the first and 10 in the second against three Mt. Vernon pitchers. The Dragons added another in the third before Tyler Goff came in and held NP in check the rest of the game. The second inning was powered by David Gunst's three-run homer. However, NP had leads of 15-0 and 16-2, and MV charged back, scoring twice each in the second-through-fifth innings and scoring four more times in the seventh to close NP's lead to 18-12 at the finish. Brian Page had three hits and five RBI and also was the Dragons' winning pitcher. Gunst was 4-for-5 with four RBI with a triple and a homer. He needed a double for the cycle.

NP finishes the regular season 22-3 (13-1). MV is now 15-8 (9-5) with two regular season games remaining. The Marauders open sectional play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Shelbyville. Logan Blair will likely face Shelbyville ace Dylan Alvis in that contest. NP will open sectional play at 10 a.m. Monday against Hamilton Heights. The second semifinal that day will feature the MV-Shelby winner against Rushville.

Greenfield-Central closes HHC play today with a doubleheader at Delta.

In softball, New Palestine clinched a second-place finish in the HHC with a 7-3 victory at Delta. Meanwhile, Greenfield-Central scored 13 seventh-inning runs to beat Eastern Hancock 16-1. Sydney Haynes was 3-for-4 with five RBI to lead a potent Cougar attack. Tori Cuebas was 2-for-4 and drove in three runs. Olivia Barnhart allowed four hits and struck out 10. G-C finishes with a 19-11 mark and opens sectional play next week.

Also today, New Palestine and Mt. Vernon were to play for the sectional title at 10 a.m. in tennis.

Friday baseball: The final weekend

Sectional play begins next week, but tonight is the final weekend of HHC play. Some good matchups -- starting with ours, which is one of the biggest in the conference this season.

Three teams enter Friday night in the mix for the HHC title. New Palestine, Mt. Vernon and Pendleton Heights. NP has already clinched at least a share, and one victory will give the Dragons the outright title. MV needs to sweep the Dragons to tie, while PH needs to sweep Yorktown in addition to an MV sweep to forge a three-way tie.

Chris Lambert and Andrew Smith will be on with you at 5 p.m. Friday with NP-MV play-by-play. Should be a good matchup between two evenly-matched teams tuning up for the sectional contests. NP is 20-3 overall and ranked No. 2 in Class 3A. The Dragons' Friday night pitchers have been Nick Smith, who had nine strikeouts in a loss to G-C last week, and Brian Page, who has pitched well and has a perfect 6-0 mark this season. Reid Clark is also a perfect 6-0. MV is 15-6, but is very dangerous, especially with Troy Montgomery returning to the lineup. The Marauders' top two of Matt Lohrey and Logan Blair is especially solid, and MV spent some time in the Top 10 this season.

Friday night roundup: Dragons clinch piece of HHC title

After Clark Pence slid across home plate Friday night to give Greenfield-Central a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over New Palestine, it looked like the Hoosier Heritage Conference baseball race was going to get really interesting -- especially when news of Mt. Vernon's 4-1 victory over Shelbyville came across.

But in the second games of their respective doubleheaders, NP won and MV was defeated, maintaining the Dragons' two-game lead in the HHC standings and therefore clinching at least a piece of the HHC title.

NP is now 11-1 heading into the final weekend of the regular season. MV is 9-3. Pendleton Heights, which was playing last-place Rushville Friday night, is also two games back of NP in the loss column. Essentially, should the Dragons win either of their two games Friday against MV, they will be outright HHC champs. An MV sweep would forge at least a two-way tie, and possibly a three-way tie if PH is able to win both of its games.

G-C, at 8-4, is in fourth place.

We will have a live broadcast of the MV-NP games at 5 p.m. Friday. Click here to listen!

In the first game between the Dragons and Cougars Friday night, Gibson's single scored Clark Pence with the winning run and handed the Dragons their first defeat in HHC play this season. G-C had come back from three one-run deficits -- answering solo homers by Brett Jackson and David Gunst in the first and fourth innings, respectively, with Stan Garner's RBI double in the first and his bases-loaded walk in the fifth. However, NP took a 3-2 lead in the sixth when Jacob Barnes' double plated Brady Thomas. G-C won the game with a double by Garrett Mitchell, a walk to Pence, a game-tying RBI hit by Curtiss Irving before Gibson hit a sinking line drive that bounced in front of Tyler Peper. Pence scored from second, beating the throw home to end the game.

Irving was the winning pitcher, scattering five hits. G-C had eight hits in the contest.

In the second game, Pence's two-run homer in the fifth gave G-C a 3-2 edge -- answering a solo homer by Reid Clark earlier in the game -- but the Dragons answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and two more unearned runs in the sixth to win. Brian Page threw a complete game, striking out six. Nick Ulrey's first career homer tied the game at 3-3, and then Page kept the rally going with a double. The big blow was Brady Thomas' two-run single. He followed with another two-run hit in the next inning.

NP is now 19-3 overall and 11-1 in HHC play. G-C is 12-8 and 8-4 in conference play.

MV won its first game 4-1, but fell 10-1 to Shelbyville in the nightcap Friday night.

In softball Friday night, NP swept Connersville, winning the opening game 4-0 and the nightcap 22-4 in five innings.

In the opener, Audrey East had a double and drove in two runs, while Katie Prosser and Julie Moore had single RBI. The Dragons scored twice in the first and never looked back. Lizzie Garrison allowed four hits and struck out eight in the pitching shutout. In the second game, NP scored 13 runs in the second inning -- and three in its other three at-bats -- to pour it on. Erin Lehman was 4-4 with five runs scored and a solo homer. Audrey East was 4-4 with two homers and seven RBI. Julie Moore was 4-4 with three RBI, Clare Myers, Alexa Cavin and Liza Fiers all had three hits each. Rachel Vawter and Candice Cooper combined to scatter eight hits in the pitching victory. Vawter got the win.

Also, on Thursday, Mt. Vernon won the HHC boys track and field title.

Wednesday roundup

In softball, New Palestine gave head coach Ed Marcum his 200th career victory in a 6-1 road victory at Fishers. NP scored once in the third, twice in the fourth and three times in the sixth before Fishers tallied its lone run against Dragon starter Lizzie Garrison. NP (13-5) had 11 hits on the day. Garrison scattered six hits to get the pitching victory. NP returns home Thursday to face Chatard, and Friday for a doubleheader against Connersville.

Greenfield-Central rallied twice to tie the game in the late innings, but fell 5-4 to Lawrence Central as the Bears scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Tori Cuebas drove in three of the Cougars' runs with a single and a double. Brittany Hardwick had a couple of hits, while Kristen Wise doubled and had an RBI. G-C led 2-0 in the third, but LC scored three times in the fourth to take the lead. The Cougars tied the game in the fifth and seventh, but saw the Bears re-take the edge in the bottom of each inning. G-C is now 14-9 on the season.

Eastern Hancock also fell in a seventh-inning rally, as Elwood scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to stun the Royals 6-5. EH had scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to take a 5-4 edge before the Panthers' rally. Savannah Blevins doubled, homered and drove in four runs for the Royals (12-10). Taylor Mercer had a pair of hits.

In baseball, New Palestine's Brady Thomas hit a three-run homer in the third to break a scoreless deadlock and send the Dragons on to a 9-2 victory over Brebeuf. Thomas' blast to the deepest part of the park set the Dragons in motion -- they'd score once more in the third and thrice more in the fourth to build a 7-0 lead against the Braves' ace. Brian Clark threw a complete-game three-hitter for the victory. No. 2 NP is now 17-2 heading into the rest of the week. A road game at Connersville takes place Thursday before Friday's visit to Greenfield-Central. The doubleheader will begin at 5 p.m. and be broadcast LIVE. Click here to listen LIVE!

Tuesday roundup

One week after dominating the county meet, New Palestine won the HHC girls track and field championship on Tuesday at Mt. Vernon, leading into next week's sectional.

Mt. Vernon's baseball team dropped its third game in its last four outings, giving up nine first-inning runs in a 9-2 defeat to Triton Central. Tyler Goff and Logan Blair led MV's offense with doubles, with Blair driving in one of two runs for MV (13-5).

In softball, Greenfield-Central dropped a key conference game to Pendleton Heights 7-1. Lauren Dieter, Kristen Wise, Kimmy Ellenberger and Ashley Whitaker had the Cougars' four hits. Ellenberger scored the lone run for G-C (14-8, 4-3 HHC). PH is now 19-4 overall and 5-0 in the HHC heading into Monday's game against New Palestine.

New Palestine's winning streak was snapped in a 4-2 loss to Lutheran. Liza Fiers and Alexa Cavin each had a pair of hits for the Dragons, who had won seven straight and are now 12-5.

Mt. Vernon scored seven runs in the fifth inning to blank Shenandoah 7-0. Whitney Estes and Melissa Dowd had three hits each, while Jessica Laubecher had two hits, a double and three RBI. Ambry Turpen pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts.

In tennis, Greenfield-Central beat Pendleton Heights 5-0. Taylor Carlton (6-1, 6-2), Amelia Shepherd (6-4, 6-2), Taylor Titus (6-4, 6-0), Kyla Leary/Lauren Brand (6-0, 6-2) and the No. 2 doubles team including Kayla Good (6-4, 6-3) won their matches.

Another storyline we're watching this week is the pursuit of 200 career victories for New Palestine softball coach Ed Marcum. He's currently at 199 career wins at his alma mater, with a game at Lutheran Tuesday. Marcum has been the Dragons' head coach since 2004, and has won three Class 3A titles in four State Finals appearances. He was also an assistant on NP's state runner-up team in 2003.

Now, for the action from Monday:
Baseball
Pendleton Heights beat Greenfield-Central 6-1 in a make-up game, using a four-run third inning to break a 1-all tie in a key Hoosier Heritage Conference game. Both teams are now 7-3 in conference play and in third place -- three games behind New Palestine and one back of second-place Mt. Vernon. PH's Mitch Patishall threw a two-hitter and Brogan Gary homered and drove in three runs for the Arabians. PH is now 12-5 overall, G-C is 11-8.

3A No. 2 New Palestine held on to beat Fishers 10-8 in a slugfest. The Dragons led 10-4, but Fishers put together a four-run sixth inning. Brady Thomas was able to get the final out in the seventh with the tying run in scoring position and the meat of the Tigers' order up. Thomas had three hits and an RBI. Jacob Barnes was 2-for-2 with two RBI, as was Tyler Peper. Nick Smith drove in three runs for NP (16-2). Brian Page got the win in relief, throwing two innings and allowing one run, as NP used four pitchers and Fishers five.

Mt. Vernon had an impressive 5-0 victory over Hamilton Southeastern. Zach McKinney homered and drove in two runs to pace MV's attack. Logan Blair pitched four hitless innings to get the win, Matt Lohrey had three shutout innings for the save. MV is now 13-4 on the year.

Softball
Eastern Hancock fell 12-3 to Shenandoah. The Royals jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first, but Shenandoah scored four in the bottom of the inning and never trailed. EH is now 12-9.

Friday roundup: Dragons 2 games clear in HHC race

Eight days ago, New Palestine, Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central were all unbeaten in the Hoosier Heritage Conference race, with a handful of games to sort it out.

The Dragons are now in the driver's seat.

NP beat Rushville in a pair of Friday-night routs at the Council of Clubs diamond, winning 15-1 and 11-1 in two games. The Dragons, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, are now 15-2 overall, but more importantly, are 10-0 in the HHC race with four games left. And, they hold a two-game lead on the field. Brian Page and Reid Clark led the Dragons on the mound in the victories.

The reason why? Mt. Vernon -- which entered the night with a similar 8-0 conference record and a No. 3 ranking in Class 3A -- had a not-as-successful twinbill, falling to Pendleton Heights in two games. PH won the opener 8-3 in eight innings, scoring five times in the eighth inning. It was MV's second extra-inning conference game in as many weeks. PH then won the second game 5-3.

Greenfield-Central beat Yorktown twice -- both by 7-2 scores -- and Clark Pence broke a school record for career homers. The Cougars are now 7-2 in HHC play with a big week coming up -- culminating with next Friday's home doubleheader against New Palestine.

In softball, New Palestine kept its winning streak going, posting its sixth straight victory. The Dragons beat Scecina 11-4, led by Erin Lehman's near-cycle performance. She led the game off with a triple and scored to key a three-run first. Later, she hit a solo homer and singled. Alexa Cavin drove in three runs and scored three times. Liza Fiers also had three RBI.

HHC baseball Friday night

It's a fairly recent change -- less than five years old -- but the HHC has created a great tradition with Friday-night doubleheaders.

You know that, for seven consecutive weekends, the night that is an event in both the fall and winter becomes one in the spring, starting at 5 p.m. The games usually have a festival atmosphere -- especially in warm weather -- and there's some good camaraderie between the communities. Between games, everyone seems to intermingle, eat together and enjoy the game we all love.

We have no broadcast this Friday -- our "Game of the Week" was the county track and field meet -- but will be back with New Palestine at Greenfield-Central on May 13, and Mt. Vernon at New Palestine on May 20.

So, let's take a look at the standings and this week's matchups:
New Palestine (#2 3A) 8-0/13-2 overall (at Rushville)
Mt. Vernon (#3 3A) 8-0/12-2 overall (vs. Pendleton Heights)
Greenfield-Central 5-2/8-7 overall (at Yorktown)
Pendleton Heights 4-3/9-7 overall (vs. Mt. Vernon)
Yorktown 4-6/7-6 overall (vs. Greenfield-Central)
Delta 2-8/6-11 overall (at Shelbyville)
Rushville 1-7/5-10 overall (vs. New Palestine)
Shelbyville 1-7/4-10 overall (vs. Delta)

All three county teams at the top of the standings, but a huge series between Mt. Vernon and Pendleton Heights. PH needs some help to get back in the conference title race, but can go a long way in helping itself with a pair of victories over MV. A Marauder sweep would eliminate PH from title contention. PH currently is 4-3 in league play, having been swept by New Palestine and lost a single game to Greenfield-Central. All eyes will be on that doubleheader. MV has put together some good offensive games, but Matt Lohrey and Logan Blair had two outstanding pitching performances. Between them (and reliever Zach McKinney), they held G-C's potent offense to two runs in 15 innings last Friday in the Cougars' smallish park.

G-C's two losses were in close games against Mt. Vernon last week -- 4-1 in extras and 2-1 -- and the Cougars are in the thick of things with a doubleheader against New Palestine next week. Expect to see some good offense as the Yorktown team the Cougars are facing this weekend has some nice sticks at the top of the order. G-C does, too, with Clark Pence, Jayden Jackson and more leading a deep lineup.

NP is the other conference leader, and the Dragons continue to score runs. They rallied from a four-run deficit to beat Batesville on Thursday, one day after falling to 4A No. 3 Cathedral, despite a strong pitching performance. NP also has a deep pitching staff with Nick Smith, Brian Page and Reid Clark leading the way.

Looking back & ahead

What a great night Wednesday at the Hancock County track and field meet.

We saw a ton of records fall -- New Palestine broke records in the 4x100 and 4x800 relays on the girls side, and Corinne Zehner blew away the 300 hurdles record en route to being named Athlete of the Meet. NP won 13 of the 15 events -- Zehner was part of four. Courtney Edon was part of three -- the 4x800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs, which she won with ease. Sonya Napariu won the shot and discus ... it was a dominating performance for the women in red, whose point total was more than the other three schools' combined.

Like NP's girls, Mt. Vernon's boys won their fifth straight title for coach Bruce Kendall, led by Stephen Davis, who won the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs comfortably. G-C's Matt Dickerson won both hurdles races and the long jump and had a blazing anchor leg of the winning 4x400 relay to share Athlete of the Meet honors.

Also, from Thursday:
New Palestine used two runs in the third and a four-run fourth inning to break a tie with Greenfield-Central and pull away to a 7-3 victory. The Dragons have now won six straight games and are now 11-4 on the season heading into a game against Scecina on Friday. Lizzie Garrison got the pitching win for NP. Erin Lehman, Liza Fiers and Megan Prosser each went 3-for-4 for the Dragons. Audrey East drove in two runs and hit two doubles. NP outhit G-C 15-9.

Pendleton Heights beat Mt. Vernon 12-1 in softball action. The Arabians jumped ahead 6-0 after two innings and finished it off in six. Alyssa Hathcoat drove in four runs for PH.

In baseball, New Palestine held on to beat Batesville 7-6. The Bulldogs hit a first-inning grand slam, but Reid Clark's two-run triple in the fourth tied the game at 4-4, and NP added two more runs in the fifth inning to take a lead, with Jacob Barnes' sacrifice fly plating one of the runs. Brady Thomas' solo homer in the sixth helped preserve the victory for reliever Brian Clark. NP is now 13-2.

On Wednesday
Mt. Vernon's softball team beat Warren Central 9-0. Ellie Balbach scattered five hits to earn the shutout for coach Mike McGill's squad.

In baseball, Mt. Vernon fell 8-2 to Lawrence Central. Logan Perdue hit a solo homer and Matt Lohrey had two hits to lead MV. Leading 3-1, LC broke it open with a four-run fifth. New Palestine fell to Cathedral 5-1. David Gunst had two hits and Brady Thomas drove in the lone run for the Dragons.

In tennis, Mt. Vernon beat Warren Central 4-1. Kayla Negley (6-0, 6-1) and Clara Ruegesegger (6-1, 6-1) won at singles for the Marauders. At doubles, Taylore Duff/Meg Yeadon (6-3, 6-4) and Kelsi Tammen/Lakin Hocker (6-4, 7-5) won two close matches to clinch the match for MV (8-2).
