Wednesday wrap: NP tennis wins

New Palestine's new tennis lineup is a perfect 2-0 -- and the Dragons now 5-2 on the year -- after a 3-2 victory over Franklin Central Wednesday afternoon.

NP won all three singles matches. At No. 1, Reid Clark won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. He is now 2-0 at the top singles spot. Brent Barrett won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, while Shayan Khokhar won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3.

FC took both doubles matches in straight sets.

NP's JV beat an undefeated Flashes squad 12-6.

Anderson 4, Mt. Vernon 1: The Marauders dropped a 4-1 decision to Anderson. Bryce Bobb was the Marauders' winner at No. 1 singles, with a 6-1, 7-6 victory. The rest of the matches were close -- MV's Kendall Ryan and Corey Beck both dropped three-set singles matches. Both doubles matches came down to a single break in the first set.

MV is now 3-3 on the year.

Lapel 3, Eastern Hancock 2: The Royals got two victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, from Kyle Kramer (6-1, 6-1) and Aaron Speas (6-1, 6-0). Lapel won three straight-set matches to clinch the victory.

Late Tuesday
Volleyball: Daleville 3, Eastern Hancock 0: The Royals fell 25-17, 25-22, 25-18 to a Delaware County power. Jordian  Eastes had six aces and 11 assists for the Royals. Melissa Bedell had eight kills, while Taylor Mercer added five kills. Tori Bednarski had 11 digs. The Royals next play Thursday vs. Blue River.

Great games!

We had a great game to open our soccer broadcast schedule as New Palestine defeated Mt. Vernon 2-1 in a penalty kick shootout tonight.

Adam Luke scored from 10 yards out for MV 5:23 in, and the Marauders had a couple of good chances shortly thereafter. NP keeper Jaron Pridgen robbed Eric Ahonen on a 22-yard free kick, and a corner by Kyle Cansler got behind the keeper, but bounced up and hit the goal frame where the crossbar meets the goalpost and bounced out. NP's Dillon Pike took a loose ball off a throw-in and headed into the far-post netting to tie it 30:05 in, and that did it.

The action was furious, but chances were few in the second half, largely because of strong defensive play -- Daniel Wright and Austin Timmerman among a strong back line for NP, Rhyan Woods, Luke Fimreite and sweeper Ahonen doing the same for MV. Pike had the best chance of OT, having a volley that MV goalkeeper Corban Hartley plucked out of the air off a ricochet in the goalmouth.

Ty Fidler and John Ernster helped NP control the run of play much of the night, as the Dragons outshot MV 11-7.

NP scored on all five shooters in the PK shootout, while Pridgen stopped one of the Marauders' first four to give the Dragons a victory. NP is now 3-1 (1-0 HHC), while MV falls to 4-1 (2-1). Dragons face Guerin on Thursday. MV faces Columbus East on Thursday and Shelbyville on Saturday.

"A game for the memories," NP coach Bobby Holden said. "If you weren't there, I'm sorry you missed it."

However, you can relive it on our www.hancockcountysports.com archive.

Greenfield-Central 3, Pendleton Heights 0: The Cougars had a big conference victory at home this evening over the Arabians. The HHC race looks to be a strong one between several teams -- MV, NP, G-C, PH, Shelbyville and Yorktown. And with the Arabians and Marauders -- a defending Sweet 16 team and a regional finalist -- both falling tonight, the conference race is wide-open.

Girls soccer
Mt. Vernon 7, Shelbyville 0: The Marauders got a big game from Kristina Voltz, who scored four times and added an assist in the victory. Suzy DeWael scored two goals and added two assists. Rachel Leonard scored MV's first goal.  Jordan Slusher, Brittany Sanders, Jacqueline Hernandez and Holly Owens all added assists. Whitney Estes and Olivia Coleman shared the shutout in net. MV is now 3-0-1 on the year.

Volleyball
Zionsville 3, New Palestine 0: The Eagles had a straight-set victory over the Dragons, winning 25-23, 25-15, 25-22. Amara Khajenouri had 12 digs to lead NP, which is now 6-2 on the year headed into Thursday's match against Greenfield-Central, which you can hear on HancockCountySports.com

Delta 3, Greenfield-Central 0: The Cougars fell 25-14, 25-15, 25-17 to the perennial powerhouse Eagles. Taylor Wright had 14 kills for Delta and Sara McGuire had 12 digs. G-C visits NP on Thursday for our www.hancockcountysports.com broadcast, while Delta hosts Mt. Vernon the same night.

Boys tennis
New Palestine 5, Morristown 0: The Dragons shuffled their lineup, but lost only three games in the straight-set victory. Reid Clark, Brent Barrett and Shayan Khokhar won at singles, while Evan Poole/Connor Swain and Kyle Willhelm/Pete Rusche won at doubles. NP is now 4-2 on the season.

Girls golf
Cougars win county: Greenfield-Central won the county golf title this afternoon.

Soccer tonight!

Join Andrew Smith at approximately 6:45 p.m. tonight for boys soccer action. The unbeaten and defending regional finalist Mt. Vernon Marauders host the defending HHC champion New Palestine Dragons in a soccer showdown. Join Andrew Smith for the call. To listen, go to www.hancockcountysports.com and click on the computer.

Monday roundup: Chatard tennis downs MV

Mt. Vernon's tennis team fell 3-2 to Chatard Monday. MV's victories came from Kendall Ryan at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-4) and Corey Beck at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-2). MV also played a long No. 2 doubles match which Chatard won on tiebreakers in both the second and third sets.

Girls golf: Dragons 3rd in 3-way
New Palestine finished third in a three-way meet Monday at Southern Dunes. Cathedral won with a 163, Southport shot 187 and New Palestine 215.

Jaymie Jarecki led the Dragons with a 51. Michaela Merlau shot a 53, Abby Poole a 54 and Sarah Rose a 57.

The Dragons next compete in the Hancock County meet Tuesday at Arrowhead.

"It was a tough day," NP coach Gregg Greene said. "Several girls were ill and either missed the match or soldiered on tried to compete. The course was extremely challenging too. with lots of water and bunkers. They had also just dressed the greens so putting was made more difficult too.  It was one of those learning days when you see how mentally tough they are. I noticed that four out of the six girls finished their final couple of holes with birdies or at least pars after struggling most of the way. This indicates that they did not quit on their round. That is a good sign."

Saturay morning QB: HHC edition

The Hoosier Heritage Conference routinely posts one of the best non-conference records in the state. It'll probably be so again this year after the HHC went 13-3 against outside-of-league football competition. As we were broadcasting two games bright and early this morning, we have an early-evening edition of Saturday Morning QB: the HHC and Hancock County roundup.

Eastern Hancock 20, South Decatur 8: Great win for the Royals as they beat South Decatur and give coach Pat Echeverria his first victory. Spencer Gilbert tops 100 yards rushing and Logan Gilbert rushes for two fourth-quarter TDs to rally the Royals. We had a great time bringing the game to you on HancockCountySports.com!
Daily Reporter

Lebanon 32, Greenfield-Central 16: The Tigers scored three touchdowns in rapid succession -- two with INT returns on back-to-back plays -- in the fourth quarter to pull away from G-C. The Cougars are now 1-1 and host Delta next week
Daily Reporter  Lebanon Reporter

Delta 28, Carroll (Allen) 23: The Eagles wanted to make a statement, and Ozzie Mann's late fourth-down TD did it. Austin Fuatavai had 123 rushing yards to lead the Eagles.

What a game!

You got to hear the words "Touchdown" a lot this afternoon from Warrior Stadium at Warren Central, as Mt. Vernon beat Marion 63-44 in a wild game that, on a normal night, might have set records. We also saw a New Palestine team get better as the game went on and put the clamps on Richmond in a 29-7 victory over the Dragons on the day's first game.

In the second game, the only one that might be comparable was the Marauders' 63-49 victory over Pendleton Heights in 2004, a game in which PH's quarterback and receiver set state records and the Marauders had 600+ yards of offense. MV has broken the 60-point mark once since -- in a 67-20 win at Connersville two years ago.

MV junior Tyler Dicks had 309 yards on 28 carries at 5 TDs -- will have to do some research on whether or not that is a school record. Corey White had 90 yards, Anthony Burnett 78. And QB Jordan Miller completed 8-of-10 passes for 135 yards, as the Marauders rolled up 623 yards of total offense. MV had 30 first downs, as MV wns and scored nine touchdowns.

It all started with the opening kickoff, as MV methodically moved 54 yards in 10 plays, using a mixture of Dicks, Burnett and White and a strong push from the offensive line that kept creating lanes for the Marauders' backs before Dicks carried in from five yards out. But Marion needed just one play to answer -- a 65-yard run that made it 7-6 after the missed two-point conversion. It kept going like that -- Corey White's 22-yard run and another 5-yarder by Dicks that was set up by a 41-yard pass to Ryan Barker made it 21-6, and Marion scored on another one-play drive, this time from 69 yards out.

That made it 21-14. That was just the first quarter. And so it went -- MV scored on nine of its 10 possessions. Marion answered with lightning-fast precision -- it was 42-28 at halftime, and Marion's drives had lasted one, one, four and two plays. MV was a bit more methodical, but practically moved the ball at will in gaining 333 yards in the first half. MV broke it open when Tyler Dicks scored from 60 yards out to make it 35-22 with 9:01 left in the quarter. The big play came in the closing seconds of the first half. MV took over at midfield with 36 ticks left, and Miller hit Burnett for a 31-yard TD with three seconds left. MV led 42-28 at that point. Even a turnover that gave Marion a TD on the first drive didn't faze the Marauders, who kept answering -- another TD by Dicks, then a 3-yard run by Burnett that capped an 84-yard drive that took 5:26 off the clock, and a 40-yard run by Dicks with a minute to go to provide the exclamation point.

In the opening game, NP's passing game was again solid, although Richmond and QB Chandler Miller was very impressive early. The Red Devils continually drove into NP territory, but a missed field goal and a couple of drives that stalled on downs inside the 40 kept it a 7-0 game. NP dodged a bullet when a halfback pass was overthrown past an open receiver in the end zone on fourth down, and the Dragons then went to work. They drove 70 yards in 59 seconds to tie the game on a 29-yard pass from Connor Simmons to Brandon Wiggins. Then, Richmond's attempts at being aggressive backfired as the Dragons held, got the ball back and used a 31-yard pass to Brandon Collins to set up Wes Fox's field goal just ahead of the gun to make it a 10-7 Dragon lead. NP went for the jugular early in the second half, with Josh Penley catching a 69-yard pass from Simmons on the Dragons' third snap of the half, and Matt Siergiej put it away with two more TDs.

Simmons was 15-of-24 for 295 yards. Collins caught six passes for 115 yards -- his second straight 100-yard game, while Penley also had 101 yards on three catches. NP had 416 total yards, using a running game that was led bi Siergiej (67 yards, 2 TDs) and Austin Monday (60 yards).

NP hosts Pendleton Heights in what will be our Game of the Week next week. Join Mike & Andrew at 7 p.m. for the pregame show and 7:30 p.m. for kickoff on www.hancockcountysports.com.

Football Friday

Good night of football tonight. It was a great scene at Eastern Hancock as the Royals celebrated something a long time coming -- a victory. I get the sense it's going to be the first of many under coach Pat Echeverria.

We've got two more on Saturday -- NP vs. Richmond & MV vs. Marion. It all starts at 9:30 a.m. from Warren Central. Listen live on www.hancockcountysports.com

Of course, the obligatory water cooler bath and celebration were forthcoming, but the Royals just milled around the bench for a long time afterwards, with parents standing behind, wanting to soak in the moment. It's really what high school football is about.

Trailing 8-7 for much of the game despite spending a good deal of the evening deep in South Decatur territory, EH showed a lot of poise, and the Royals really appeared to wear South Decatur down in the 4th quarter -- and turned the game on a gutsy call by the new head coach.

On 4th-and-1 from the Royal 24, Echeverria sent the offense out, and sophomore RB Spencer Gilbert broke off-tackle for a 5-yard run. Then, he went for 13 ... and brother Logan broke off a 28-yard run to set the Royals up deep in SD territory. Logan Gilbert -- EH's QB -- eventually scored on a run from 12 yards out to make it 13-8. After the Royals held on downs, Logan scored again -- and then intercepted a pass to snuff out South Decatur's final possession.

EH outgained SD 144-39 in the second half -- nearly all of the Royals' total coming on the ground. Spencer Gilbert ran for 137 yards on 22 carries -- including carrying a lot of the load in the fourth quarter and setting up the first TD with a 35-yard run. Logan Gilbert ran for 85 yards, threw for 41 more and accounted for all three Royal touchdowns. TE/LB Chandler Hards had a big game on both sides of the ball, catching a 12-yard TD pass from Logan Gilbert on the game's first drive.

EH travels to MIFC rival Indian Creek next week for a 7 p.m. kickoff. IC fell to Greenwood Friday night.

Elsewhere
Lebanon 32, Greenfield-Central 16: The Cougars trailed by a touchdown going into the fourth and were driving, but Lebanon scored 19 points in the final quarter, including to INT returns for TDs.
And in the HHC:
Delta 28, Carroll (Allen) 23: Delta's Ozzie Mann scored from 1 yard out late in the game to give the Eagles a big victory over a strong 5A program from Fort Wayne. Delta is 2-0 heading into next week's game against Greenfield-Central.
Pendleton Heights 41, Anderson 23: The Arabians led 14-10 at halftime, and then pulled away. PH has scored 106 points in two games, and opens HHC play at New Palestine last week. We'll have the broadcast on www.hancockcountysports.com!
Rushville 28, New Castle 6: The Lions go 2-0 in non-conference play again, and keep the HHC perfect against the North Central Conference.
Yorktown 34, Northwest 13: Nice win for Coach Wilhelm's team, which is 2-0 in non-conference play.
Franklin 65, Shelbyville 7: The Golden Bears fell to 0-2 after a big loss to the Grizzly Cubs. It was 41-0 at half and 58-7 after three.

League play starts next week:
MV vs. Yorktown
NP vs. Pendleton Heights
G-C vs. Delta
Shelbyville vs. Rushville

Big football weekend coming up

We have a HUGE football weekend coming up full of HancockCountySports.com broadcasts!

To LISTEN LIVE!, go to www.hancockcountysports.com and click on the computer.

Friday: South Decatur at Eastern Hancock, 6:30 p.m. airtime
The Royals and Cougars both fell in their openers, but EH showed a lot of promise. Should be an exciting game. We're looking forward to bringing it to you!
Saturday: New Palestine vs. Richmond, 9:30 a.m. airtime from Warren Central
The Dragons are fresh off a huge 16-14 victory over Whiteland in which their passing game was lethal. Richmond fell to East Central 41-7, but has a lot of weapons in the passing game.

Saturday: Mt. Vernon vs. Marion, approx. 12:30 p.m. airtime from Warren Central
The Marauders rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Kokomo 21-7 last week behind two fourth-quarter TDs by Anthony Burnett. Marion's offense scored 58 points last week. MV's defense didn't give up any -- the lone Kokomo points came on an interception return. Expect some great running games to go after each other.

One more Hancock County game this weekend:
Greenfield-Central at Lebanon, 7 p.m. Friday (broadcast: WRGF-89.7). The Cougars were impressive in a season-opening victory over New Castle. Coached by Kent Wright, Lebanon will be a great tune-up for G-C heading into conference play and next week's date with Delta.

Elsewhere in the HHC
Carroll (Allen) at Delta, 7 p.m.: The Eagles rolled last week, but will get a good test from Carroll, a team that fell 24-17 to a strong Goshen squad last week. Carroll is a 5A program that went 5-7 last year.
Franklin at Shelbyville, 7 p.m. (broadcast: WSVX-1520, www.wsvx.com): The Golden Bears were the lone HHC team to fall last week, dropping a decision to Greensburg. Franklin poses a tough test. While the Grizzly Cubs have only won five games over two seasons, they did post an impressive 41-12 victory over Franklin last week.
New Castle at Rushville, 7 p.m. (broadcast: WMDH-1550, WIFE-94.3). Great matchup as the NCC-HHC challenge continues. So far, the HHC is 3-0 in intra-conference matchups. Rushville had a big win over Connersville last week, while NC fell to Greenfield-Central 43-13.
Pendleton Heights at Anderson, 7 p.m. (broadcast: WEEM-91.7, WHBU-1240): These old neighbors haven't played football against each other in years -- if ever. PH has played two of Anderson's consolidates -- Highland and Madison Heights, both schools now part of history -- in that time. Another HHC-NCC matchup. The Arabians can score, but the reason they've been strong of late is a defense that turned it on in the second half of last season and posted a shutout in Week 1 this year.
Yorktown at Northwest, 7 p.m.: The Tigers had a nice opening to the season, beating Muncie South in overtime. They're still very young. Northwest was defeated 34-12 by Franklin County last week.

A great night

Thanks for joining us for New Palestine's 16-14 win over Whiteland tonight. It was a different look from the Dragons as they aired it out. Connor Simmons was 18-of-29 for 213 yards, Max Disman threw a 19-yard TD on his only throw (and caught 5 passes for 60 yards) and Brandon Collins had 10 catches for 127 yards and a TD. NP's defense repeatedly stopped Whiteland and kept the ball deep in Warrior territory. Austin Monday ran for 68 yards and a first-half TD, and NP scored nine unanswered points in the third quarter -- with Whiteland only able to run three plays in-between -- and the Dragons' defense held the Warriors at bay in the fourth.

It was a big night for local teams. Mt. Vernon opened the Doug Armstrong era with an impressive 21-7 victory over Kokomo. It was the Wildkats' first regular-season loss since 2008 -- a span of 25 games. It snapped a 33-game winning streak over Indiana schools in the regular season. Greenfield-Central -- a team that is really poised for a big year -- had a 43-13 victory over New Castle.

Eastern Hancock opened the Pat Echeverria era by playing a close first half against Triton Central, but the Tigers pulled away to a 33-13 victory over EH.

All told, the HHC went 7-1 this weekend.
Delta had little trouble with Jay County, winning 55-0.
Defending sectional champ Pendleton Heights throttled Muncie Central 65-0.
Rushville knocked off rival Connersville 34-9 to keep the War on 44 trophy.
Yorktown beat Muncie South 27-20 in OT
The only defeat for a conference team was Shelbyville's 22-7 loss to Greensburg.

Next week: it's all non-conference games again.
Friday night's games:
Greenfield-Central at Lebanon
Carroll (Allen) at Delta
Franklin at Shelbyville
New Castle at Rushville
Pendleton Heights at Anderson
Yorktown at Northwest
Saturday's games (at Warren Central)
New Palestine vs. Richmond, 10 a.m.
Mt. Vernon vs. Marion, 1 p.m.

Of course, we will have both of the Warren Central Classic games, as well as EH-South Decatur on Friday night. Join us on HancockCountySports.com!

Football Week 1

This week's games
Whiteland at New Palestine, 7:30 p.m. (broadcast: www.hancockcountysports.com)
Great matchup to start the year. Whiteland handed NP its only regular-season loss last season. Dragons have graduated Austin Cahoy, but are very deep at the skill positions, especially with QB Connor Simmons and wideouts Josh Penley and Brandon Collins. OLB Sam Wright was outstanding in last week's scrimmage, too. Whiteland has one of the state's top OL in Jake Meador and a multi-year starter in QB Tommy Riegel. Looking forward to seeing it and bringing it to you.
Mt. Vernon at Kokomo, 7 p.m. (broadcast: WIOU-1350 Kokomo)
The Doug Armstrong era begins at MV. The Marauders are deep, especially at running back, with Corey White, Anthony Burnett and Tyler Dicks. Armstrong will bring toughness to the defense led by Harrison Bova and Brandon Lockart. Kokomo has been a power in the NCC the last several years under coach Brett Colby, but this was a great game when these two teams met at Lucas Oil last year.
Greenfield-Central at New Castle, 7:30 p.m. (broadcast: WRGF-89.7 Greenfield/WMDH-1550 NC)
G-C was the most impressive team few talked about last year. Solid defense, a lot of young, talented skill players that are all back.QB Tyler Colclazier is solid, and he's got some weapons. Brant Boles-Lattimore and Matt Dickerson have speed to burn, and Derek Conley really solidified himself at running back in G-C's tournament run last season.
Triton Central at Eastern Hancock, 7 p.m.
Two coaches -- TC's Gabe Johnson and EH's Pat Echeverria -- who were in the 5A title game a few years back as defensive coaches. Now, they're making their head coaching debuts against each other. EH has a new look -- it'll be interesting to see how the Royals fare against a solid TC team.

Elsewhere in the HHC
Connersville at Rushville, 7 p.m. (broadcast: WIFE-94.3/1580 Rushville/Connersville)
Connersville is getting better, but Rushville was playing some good football in the tournament last year and expect good things out of them. This will soon be a conference matchup -- but not in the HHC.

Jay County at Delta, 7 p.m.
Delta is Delta. Ranked No. 8 for a reason.

Shelbyville at Greensburg, 7 p.m. (broadcast WSVX-1520 Shelbyville, www.wsvx.com)
Pat Parks is one of the most underrated coaches in the state and his teams always get the most out of their talent. This is always a good matchup.
Muncie Central at Pendleton Heights, 7:30 p.m. (broadcast: WEEM-91.7 Pendleton)
Coming off its first sectional title in school history, PH has a few weapons back, but graduated its biggest one in RB Dezmon Nunn.
Muncie South at Yorktown, 7:30 p.m.
Yorktown took its lumps early last year, but had Hamilton Heights on the ropes in the sectional. They had a VERY young team and grew up a lot.

Thursday wrap: EH, NP win in volleyball

Volleyball
Eastern Hancock 3, Cambridge City Lincoln 2: For the second straight contest, the Royals put together a thrilling five-game win, beating CCL 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 18-16.
