Monday wrap: MV volleyball impressive


Mt. Vernon had a strong 25-9, 25-13, 25-10 victory over Eastern Hancock in a match you enjoyed here on HancockCountySports.com. Listen to the archive here. Ali Smith had nine aces and four kills for MV, while Erica Moore had 13 kills and were named our Co-Players of the Match.

Emily Jeffries had five kills unofficially for Eastern Hancock.

Both the Marauders and Royals are back in action Wednesday. MV visits Rushville, EH meets Tri.


Our volleyball coverage will continue Oct. 8 with the Hancock County Tournament, which will be played at Mt. Vernon. Join Chris Lambert for the title match.

New Palestine 3, Knightstown 0: The Dragons upended the Panthers in three games 25-11, 25-16, 25-20 to improve to 15-6 on the year. NP hosts Morristown on Tuesday and hosts Pike Thursday.

New Palestine 4, Franklin 0: Holly Hilton registered her 38th career shutout -- and punctuated it with a penalty kick goal in the Dragons' victory.

On a rainy afternoon, NP scored four second-half goals. Lauren Kehrt scored the game-winning goal just 4:20 into the second half. Her sixth goal of the year was assisted by Lindsay Meyer -- giving her a team-high 12 helpers on the year. Ninety-two seconds later, Kalli Shepler-Tucker scored her ninth goal of the year on Kehrt's assist to make it 2-0. The Dragons added two goals in the final eight minutes, with Shepler-Tucker feeding Alyssa Mouzin for her second goal of the season, and Hilton scoring on a penalty kick with 1:23 left.

The Dragons outshot Franklin 19-4, with Hilton making four saves for her ninth shutout this season.

The Dragons are now 11-0-2. In 13 games, they have allowed only four goals. Next, they play conference co-leader Pendleton Heights on the road at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Greenfield-Central 2, Pendleton Heights 1: G-C knocked the Arabians from a potential first-place tie in the HHC with the victory. Emily Koers scored twice in the first half -- her eighth and ninth of the year -- on assists from Sammie McCoy both times. Lindsey Church scored her 11th of the year for PH in the second half, but Cougar goalkeeper Katie Peters kept the Arabians at bay.

G-C is now 8-2-1 on the season. The Cougars next play Thursday at home against Shelbyville.

Mt. Vernon 4, Hamilton Heights 0: Kristina Voltz scored all four of the Marauders' goals in the victory. She had three first-half goals on assists from Suzy DeWael, Krista Shockley and Halie Whitaker, and added an unassisted goal in the second half.

Olivia Coleman made eight saves to register the shutout for MV, which is now 8-2-1 on the year. MV hosts Rushville at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
