Wednesday wrap: MV soccer wins 8-0 again

Two nights into the boys soccer season, and Mt. Vernon is 8-0, 8-0. One night after putting a snowman on the board against Richmond, the Marauders did it again Wednesday at Rushville in their HHC opener.

Trevor Johnson scored a hat trick and Mouhamed Kanate added two goals to lead MV to the 8-0 victory. Each also had an assist. Luke Fimreite scored the game's first goal -- his second in two nights -- and MV was off from there. Johnson and Cole Justus also scored in the first half, Kyle Pruitt joined Johnson and Kanate in scoring second-half goals. For the second straight night, Corban Hartley and Drew Kammerer combined on the shutout, making a total of three saves.

Late Tuesday events
Volleyball: EH 3, Morristown 2: Morristown has been the measuring stick for small-school volleyball in the area for more than a decade. But Eastern Hancock knocked off the Jackets with a thrilling 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-11 victory over the Yellow Jackets. Taylor Mercer had 12 kills and 17 digs to lead EH. Melissa Carlton had 16 digs, Melissa Bedell totled 10 kills while Jordian Eastes had 15 digs, 38 assists and seven aces.

Boys soccer: G-C 1, New Castle 1: The Cougars struck first in the opening half, but New Castle tied the score in the second half as both teams opened 0-0-1.

Girls golf: Whiteland 159, New Palestine 184: The Dragons shot their best score since 2007 at Hickory Stick. Abby Poole led NP with a 40.
