Great games!

We had a great game to open our soccer broadcast schedule as New Palestine defeated Mt. Vernon 2-1 in a penalty kick shootout tonight.

Adam Luke scored from 10 yards out for MV 5:23 in, and the Marauders had a couple of good chances shortly thereafter. NP keeper Jaron Pridgen robbed Eric Ahonen on a 22-yard free kick, and a corner by Kyle Cansler got behind the keeper, but bounced up and hit the goal frame where the crossbar meets the goalpost and bounced out. NP's Dillon Pike took a loose ball off a throw-in and headed into the far-post netting to tie it 30:05 in, and that did it.

The action was furious, but chances were few in the second half, largely because of strong defensive play -- Daniel Wright and Austin Timmerman among a strong back line for NP, Rhyan Woods, Luke Fimreite and sweeper Ahonen doing the same for MV. Pike had the best chance of OT, having a volley that MV goalkeeper Corban Hartley plucked out of the air off a ricochet in the goalmouth.

Ty Fidler and John Ernster helped NP control the run of play much of the night, as the Dragons outshot MV 11-7.

NP scored on all five shooters in the PK shootout, while Pridgen stopped one of the Marauders' first four to give the Dragons a victory. NP is now 3-1 (1-0 HHC), while MV falls to 4-1 (2-1). Dragons face Guerin on Thursday. MV faces Columbus East on Thursday and Shelbyville on Saturday.

"A game for the memories," NP coach Bobby Holden said. "If you weren't there, I'm sorry you missed it."

However, you can relive it on our www.hancockcountysports.com archive.

Greenfield-Central 3, Pendleton Heights 0: The Cougars had a big conference victory at home this evening over the Arabians. The HHC race looks to be a strong one between several teams -- MV, NP, G-C, PH, Shelbyville and Yorktown. And with the Arabians and Marauders -- a defending Sweet 16 team and a regional finalist -- both falling tonight, the conference race is wide-open.

Rachel Leonard scored MV's first goal.  Jordan Slusher, Brittany Sanders, Jacqueline Hernandez and Holly Owens all added assists. Whitney Estes and Olivia Coleman shared the shutout in net. MV is now 3-0-1 on the year.

Delta 3, Greenfield-Central 0: The Cougars fell 25-14, 25-15, 25-17 to the perennial powerhouse Eagles. Taylor Wright had 14 kills for Delta and Sara McGuire had 12 digs. G-C visits NP on Thursday for our www.hancockcountysports.com broadcast, while Delta hosts Mt. Vernon the same night.
