Thursday wrap: MV, NP boys soccer win

Mt. Vernon and New Palestine won ahead of Tuesday's showdown on the soccer field at MV, which you can listen to LIVE on www.hancockcountysports.com!

Boys soccer
New Palestine 3, Franklin Central 2: The Dragons won their second straight game, beating Franklin Central 3-2. Bryson Basaran scored in the first half on an assist from Matt Ernster. He added an unassisted goal in the second half for his sixth of the year. Wes Fox scored later in the second half to put the Dragons over the top on an assist from Ben Richter.

The Dragons are now 2-0 and face Lawrence Central Saturday at home. JV kickoff is noon.

"Its games like those that makes you understand why keeping ones composure for the entirety of a game is so important," NP coach Bobby Holden said. "Emotions run high in athletes and players must remember to keep a level head in the midst of chaos."

Mt. Vernon 5, Warren Central 3: The Marauders jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead and held on. Trevor Johnson scored MV's two first-half goals and added an assist, while Mouhamed Kanate also scored two goals, including the insurance goal that iced it in the second half, and also had an assist.  Adam Luke scored what eventually would become the game-winner. Luke Fimreite, Matt Powell and Kyle Pruitt also had assists for the Marauders. Corban Hartley made two saves in net.

MV is now 4-0 on the season.

Girls soccer: Greenfield-Central 3, Yorktown 1: The Cougars trailed 1-0 at halftime, but rallied in the second half. Taylor Titus tied the game, and then added an insurance goal later in the half. Lauren Brand's second-half goal gave the Cougars the lead, assisted by Emily Koers. Kyla Leary also had an assist on Titus' second goal. Katie Peters earned the victory in net for the Cougars. 

Volleyball: New Palestine 3, Whiteland 1:  New Palestine's volleyball team got on a roll midway through the match and pulled away to a 25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 25-17 victory over Whiteland at home Thursday night.

Abby Seifert had 12 kills for the Dragons. Amara Khajenouri had 16 digs. Megan Riley had nine blocks, while Lauren Tieman had eight.

NP is now 3-1 heading into the Lawrence Central Invitational this Saturday morning.

This game was carried tonight, as we did a test broadcast to work out bugs before our first volleyball broadcast next Thursday, Sept. 1, when New Palestine hosts Greenfield-Central. You can listen to the archived broadcast of this match on www.hancockcountysports.com!


Boys tennis: New Palestine 4, Shenandoah 1: The Dragons posted their second straight victory. NP is now 3-2 on the year. 

Stratton Smith and Shayan Khokhar both posted 6-0, 6-0 singles victories. At doubles, both Reid Clark/Connor Swain and Evan Poole/Kyle Willhelm won 6-2, 6-0.

"The guys played well tonight," NP coach Chris Hardin said. "They took a step in the right direction. They played the caliber of tennis and did a good job of staying focused."

NP won the JV match 7-1.
