Tuesday roundup: MV soccer wins 8-0

Boys soccer
Mt. Vernon 8, Richmond 0: Mouhamed Kanate scored four goals and Eric Thompson added two more second-half tallies in a Marauder season-opening romp. Eric Ahonen scored the season's first goal on an assist from Kyle Cansler, and the floodgates opened rapidly from there. Kanate scored a hat trick in the first half, with Adam Luke also adding a goal to make it 5-0. Cansler and C.J. Coleman each had two assists. Ahonen and Luke both had a goal and an assist, while Luke Fimreite and freshman Matt Powell both had assists. Corban Hartley and Drew Kammerer shared the shutout in net. MV next plays Wednesday at Rushville. 

Girls soccer
Mt. Vernon 1, Southport 1: Senior Kristina Voltz scored a first-half goal on an assist from Suzy DeWael to knot the game, and it stayed that way the rest of the night in the Marauders' season opener. Freshman Olivia Coleman made five stops in net to secure the tie. The Marauders open 0-0-1 and next play Saturday at Muncie Central. They will then face Greenfield-Central Monday night. 

Volleyball
New Palestine 3, Rushville 0: The Dragons won their season-opening match 25-9, 25-16, 25-6 over Rushville Tuesday night. Senior Emily Curry had 15 assists and six kills for the Dragons. Megan Riley added seven blocks and five kills. NP is now 1-0 both overall and in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. 

Perry Meridian 3, Greenfield-Central 0: The Cougars fell 25-10, 25-14, 25-23 in their season opener. G-C next plays Saturday in the Lafayette Jeff Classic.  

Boys tennis
Whiteland 3, New Palestine 2:The Dragons' victories both came at doubles. Reid Clark and Connor Swain won at No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Evan Poole and Kyle Willhelm won 6-0, 6-3. The Dragons were close at singles, with two freshmen and a sophomore playing in the three spots. Freshman Brent Barrett dropping a 6-4, 6-3 No. 1 singles match in his varsity debut. Shayan Khokhar and Ben Farley both dropped straight-set matches, but lost one of the two sets by one break.
