Monday wrap: Marauders beat G-C in shootout

Tonight, the Mt. Vernon girls soccer team beat Greenfield-Central 2-1 in a shootout. MV outscored the Cougars 4-3 in PKs.

Suzy DeWael scored the Marauders' goal in regulation on an assist from Jordan Slusher midway through the second half. G-C scored with four minutes left in regulation to tie the game.

In the shootout, DeWael and Slusher scored on their first two shots, while MV goalkeeper Olivia Coleman stopped G-C's first attempt, and the second went high. Holly Owens and Kristina Voltz also scored on their shootout attempts to clinch the victory for the Marauders.

Coleman made 10 saves in regulation.


MV is now 2-0-1.

Boys tennis
Pendleton Heights 3, Mt. Vernon 2: Four of the five matches went down to the wire, but the Arabians pulled out an HHC victory. MV won two three-set matches. At No. 2 singles, Kendall Ryan won 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 1 doubles, Ben Bobb and Jake Shepard won 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. PH won three straight-set matches, but two went down to one break, as MV's Reid Eberhard fell 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, and Zak Weaver and Corey Beck fell 7-5, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles. MV is 1-1 and 0-1 in HHC play.

"We have to play smarter, with more courage and believe we are the better team," MV coach Gabe Muterspaugh said. "We have had guys really work in the offseason but it has to translate to on-court performance and we got beat a couple places we think we are better at but not tonight." 

MV's JV won 5-2. 

Delta 5, New Palestine 0: NP dropped all five matches in straight sets, although the Dragons had a couple of close sets. At No. 2 singles, Stratton Smith fell 6-4, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Shayan Khokhar took his first set to a tiebreaker, but fell 7-6(3), 6-1.

Delta won the JV match 7-5.

Saturday lookback
G-C 2nd in Cougar Cup: Greenfield-Central's boys soccer team fell 2-1 in a shootout to Ritter in the championship game of the Cougar Cup tournament. Ritter outscored the Cougars 4-2 in the PK session. Joe McClarnon scored the tying goal for G-C in the second half to send it to the PK session. In the afternoon game, G-C beat Greencastle 1-0 on Joe Hudson's goal.
