Saturday wrap

Girls soccer
Dragons win own tourney: New Palestine's 18th-ranked girls soccer team outscored two opponents 9-0 Saturday to win the New Palestine Invitational.

NP beat University 3-0 to win the championship. Lindsay Meyer scored the Dragons' first goal in the second half, and then Kalli Shepler-Tucker added two goals -- her third and fourth of the day. Meyer, who also had an assist, also had her hand in four goals in the tournament, scoring one and assisting on three others. Kristin Wagner assisted on Shepler-Tucker's first goal. Holly Hilton posted the shutout in goal.

In the opening game, the Dragons beat Franklin Central 6-0.

The Dragons led 5-0 at halftime and Lauren Kehrt added the final goal in the second half. Lauren Joray scored the Dragons' first two goals and assisted on two others. Shepler-Tucker scored twice. Morgan Carpenter tallied the fifth goal. Meyer had two assists. Amy Hilton and Wagner also had assists for the Dragons, who are now 3-0 on the season.

Boys soccer
Greenfield-Central wins 1st in its tourney: Greenfield-Central beat Greencastle 1-0 in the opening game of the Cougar Cup tournament Saturday afternoon.


Cross country
Dragons 5th, 7th at Brebeuf: The New Palestine girls cross country team placed fifth of eight teams in Saturday's Brebeuf Invitational. Sophomore Natalie Shields led the Dragons, finishing 16th with a time of 21:41 over 5K. Brebeuf's Hannah Lies won the event with a 19:25. Junior Emily Trimpe ran a 22:14 to finish 22nd for NP. Caroline Voelz was 30th (23:10), one spot ahead of teammate Kayla Medaris (23:19). Chloe Kirchner (39th, 24:09) was the Dragons' fifth runner. The Dragons totaled 138 points. Chatard won the event with 38.

On the boys side, the Dragons placed seventh of 11 teams, totaling 198 points. Zionsville (27) was the meet winner. Sophomore Seth Eagleson led the Dragons by finishing 11th, running a personal-best time of 17:02. Drew Gohmann (42nd, 18:42), Sam Jones (43rd, 18:46), Oliver Dockins (54th, 19:09) and Zach Nagel (57th, 19:34) all scored for the Dragons. Zionsville's Ryan Conrad was the winner with a time of 16:10.
