Friday night hoops

Tonight was a big night for Mt. Vernon, as Quinn Williams helped carry the Marauders in the second half, but he had a lot of support in a 49-44 victory over New Palestine.

MV has played close games all year and often come out on the short end, so this was a big victory, moving the Marauders to 5-13 on the year. NP fell to 8-9 after the loss.

Williams hit 8-of-12 after halftime and scored 21 of his 27 points after the break. He also was 9-of-10 from the line. He helped lead the Marauders back from a four-point halftime deficit, and a deficit that was as large as seven in the first half. He scored MV's first 12 fourth-quarter points, and helped spark a 15-4 third quarter that gave MV a seven-point edge going into the final eight minutes.

Stephen Turner (10 points) and C.J. Coleman (9 points) also had strong nights for the Marauders. Taylor Rainey (13 points), Reid Clark (11 points) and Josh Penley (10 points) led the Dragons in a losing effort.

MV shot 44% in the second half, while NP hit just 21% from the floor.

Both teams are next in action Tuesday night: MV vs. Westfield, NP at Shelbyville.

Greenfield-Central 56, Cambridge City Lincoln 43: Nice bounce-back win on the road for the Cougars, who improve to 7-10 on the season with three games remaining against Connersville and Knightstown next week after facing Delta Saturday night. Delta knocked off Shelbyville on Friday, making the G-C/Delta game a battle for third place in the HHC. Winner gets third. Loser gets fourth -- either to themselves or potentially tied with Shelby.

Saturday boys hoops: Delta (13-5) at G-C (7-10); Tri (2-15) at EH (14-3).

Of course, our attention is turning to girls hoops. Follow us for Twitter updates during the Roncalli-Madison game, and then we will be on LIVE with the Mt. Vernon-Lebanon game at approximately 11:20 p.m. If MV wins, we will be on for the regional final at 7:40 p.m.
