Successful night for county hoop squads

It was a successful day & evening for the county basketball teams.

Earlier, you read about Mt. Vernon's 64-24 victory over Yorktown. Tonight, three other basketball teams in the county joined them as winners.

Let's start with boys basketball
Eastern Hancock 68, Sheridan 53: The Royals bounced back nicely from Friday's loss to Northeastern, in which EH lost a 21-point lead. Sheridan was also coming off a big victory.

And in girls basketball
New Palestine 59, Shelbyville 35: The Dragons commanded the glass in the opening half, built a 25-9 lead, extended it to 30-13 at halftime and cruised to a victory over the Golden Bears.

NP is now 2-1 in HHC play and 3-5 overall. The Dragons got big nights from their forwards, as Lauren Tieman scored 14 points and Abby Seifert had a career-high 11 points and added 14 boards -- one shy of her career high. Bethany Murrell had eight rebounds and five assists, while Kyleigh Smock also had five assists for the Dragons.

Greenfield-Central 60, Chatard 53, OT: LaRae Cruz had a career night for the Cougars, scoring 30 points to lead G-C to an overtime victory.

The victory was the Cougars' fifth straight, and gave them a 6-3 mark for the year.

The Cougars jumped ahead 15-8 after a quarter, but Chatard used an 11-4 third quarter to take the lead at 37-34. The teams were tied 49-all going to OT,

In addition to Cruz's 30, the Cougars also got contributions from freshman Regan Lewis (8 points) and junior frontliners Katie Peters (7 points) and junior center Sara Jones (7 points).

G-C next plays Tuesday at home against Richmond.
