Marauders win consolation game

Mt. Vernon was very impressive in a dominant consolation-game victory over Roncalli in the evening session of the Hall of Fame Classic.

MV won 72-46 over the Rebels -- avenging a defeat from last year's regional championship game. The Marauders jumped out to a 23-3 lead, and then after Roncalli closed the Marauder lead to seven late in the third, used a 15-0 run to go up 67-41 and put the game away.

The Marauders controlled the glass -- outrebounding Roncalli 16-4 in the opening half and 36-14 for the game. MV's defense also forced 18 Roncalli turnovers.

MV shot 56 percent from the floor -- including 60 percent after halftime. Roncalli hit 43 percent from the field.

Makenzi Reasor led the Marauders offensively with 19 points, hitting 8-of-13 shots. She also had five boards, a steal and a block. Jessica Brown had a strong all-around game with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. She hit 7-of-13 from the floor. Erica Moore and Rachel Houck both hit 5-of-9 -- Houck buried three 3-pointers. Moore had 15 points and seven boards, Houck 13 points and three steals. Kelsie Owens added six big points off the bench.

MV's point output was its highest of the year, eclipsing its total in its victory against Hamilton Heights in November.

Unbeaten 4A No. 2 Penn -- which beat MV in the opening game -- went on to defeat 3A No. 1 Norwell 46-39 in the championship game.

The Marauders are now 11-3. They are next in action Tuesday against Southport at home.
