Tuesday roundup

One week after dominating the county meet, New Palestine won the HHC girls track and field championship on Tuesday at Mt. Vernon, leading into next week's sectional.

Mt. Vernon's baseball team dropped its third game in its last four outings, giving up nine first-inning runs in a 9-2 defeat to Triton Central. Tyler Goff and Logan Blair led MV's offense with doubles, with Blair driving in one of two runs for MV (13-5). 

In softball, Greenfield-Central dropped a key conference game to Pendleton Heights 7-1. Lauren Dieter, Kristen Wise, Kimmy Ellenberger and Ashley Whitaker had the Cougars' four hits. Ellenberger scored the lone run for G-C (14-8, 4-3 HHC). PH is now 19-4 overall and 5-0 in the HHC heading into Monday's game against New Palestine.

New Palestine's winning streak was snapped in a 4-2 loss to Lutheran. Liza Fiers and Alexa Cavin each had a pair of hits for the Dragons, who had won seven straight and are now 12-5. 

Mt. Vernon scored seven runs in the fifth inning to blank Shenandoah 7-0. Whitney Estes and Melissa Dowd had three hits each, while Jessica Laubecher had two hits, a double and three RBI. Ambry Turpen pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts.

In tennis, Greenfield-Central beat Pendleton Heights 5-0. Taylor Carlton (6-1, 6-2), Amelia Shepherd (6-4, 6-2), Taylor Titus (6-4, 6-0), Kyla Leary/Lauren Brand (6-0, 6-2) and the No. 2 doubles team including Kayla Good (6-4, 6-3) won their matches.
