Cougar baseball wins, softball falls on stormy night

Greenfield-Central's baseball team advanced to the semifinal round of the Pendleton Heights sectional Wednesday, beating Anderson 5-1. Curtiss Irving scattered four hits, and the Cougars pulled ahead in the fourth with a four-run inning. Irving also had two hits and three RBI. John Scott also had an RBI hit in the fourth, and added another hit. Mitch Gibson and Jayden Jackson also had a pair of hits for the Cougars (14-12). The Cougars will play Pendleton Heights in Monday's 10 a.m. semifinal game. Anderson finishes 20-6.

G-C's softball team fell to Pendleton Heights 6-0 in the semifinal game of their sectional at PH. The Arabians scored four times in the first, keyed by Taylor Robinette's three-run triple. G-C was held to two hits.

All of Wednesday's other scheduled action -- EH baseball and softball in the sectional, MV baseball sectional -- was postponed due to weather.

In baseball, MV led Shelbyville 1-0 in the third. They will resume at 5 p.m. today. EH's game at Centerville will begin at approximately 6 p.m. today. The Royals will face Hagerstown. The winner plays either Cambridge City Lincoln or Knightstown at 10 a.m. Monday. CCL leads 7-2 at the start of the fifth.

In softball, EH's game against Cambridge City Lincoln is a likely 7 p.m. start at Shenandoah. The winner faces either Union County or Shenandoah, who will resume their scheduled game at 5:30 p.m. today with it scoreless in the fourth.

Also tonight, the boys track and field regionals are scheduled, as is the New Palestine-Hamilton Heights softball sectional final at HH.

One addition to our girls track regional coverage. New Palestine found out Wednesday that Nicole Fluegel (200) and Lauren Joray (400) advanced on their times to the State Finals. They both finished fourth in their events at the Shelbyville regional. This gives NP athletes in eight events at the girls State Finals, which will be June 4 in Bloomington.
