Tuesday roundup: NP avenges softball defeat; track sends several to state

New Palestine avenged a regular-season defeat to Mt. Vernon in the sectional Tuesday, as the Dragons beat the Marauders 6-4 in the semifinal round of the Hamilton Heights sectional.

NP (20-6) advances to Thursday's sectional title game at 5:30 p.m. The Dragons will face Hamilton Heights, a 2-1 winner over Shelbyville. MV finishes 16-7.

The game was tied at 2 going into the sixth, but the Dragons scored twice in each of the last two innings to pull away. MV scored single runs in each inning. Katie Prosser was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI to lead the Dragons. Clare Myers had a pair of hits and drew a pair of walks. Lizzie Garrison scattered 10 hits, but allowed just two earned runs to get the pitching victory.

In Class 2A, Eastern Hancock won its first-round matchup with Northeastern, beating the Knights 2-1. The Royals will face Cambridge City Lincoln at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Shenandoah.

In Class 4A, Greenfield-Central drew a bye, but found out its opponent tonight as Pendleton Heights beat Muncie Central 10-0. The Cougars and Arabians will meet at PH at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Richmond and New Castle will meet in the other semifinal.

In tennis, New Palestine dropped a 5-0 decision to Carmel in the North Central regional. Mt. Vernon's Kayla Negley advanced in the singles competition.

In track and field, New Palestine is sending several athletes to the State Finals. Junior Corinne Zehner became a two-time regional champion, winning the 100 hurdles (14.80) and 300 hurdles (45.46) to advance to the State Finals. Zehner will also advance in the 4x100 relay, joining Brooke Basaran, Nicole Fluegel and Lauren Joray (49.98). They were third at the regional. NP's 4x800 relay of Morgan Carpenter, Courtney Edon, Caitlynn Edon and Lauren Joray also finished second to advance with a time of 9:36.31. Senior Courtney Edon advanced to the State Finals in the 3200 meter run. She finished second at the Shelbyville regional with a time of 11:28.53, 21 seconds back of champion Jessica Richardson of Columbus North. NP junior Sonya Napariu is advancing in discus. She finished third with a throw of 121-3. As a team, the Dragons finished fifth with 64 points, 34.5 back of champion Franklin Central. Greenfield-Central scored five points, Eastern Hancock one.


NP just missed advancing two others.Fluegel just missed advancing in the 200, as she finished fourth, by 0.63 seconds. Joray was less than a second from advancing in the 800 with a time of 2:18.13. The State Finals will be June 4 at Indiana University.

Results from Mt. Vernon's appearance in the Ben Davis regional have not yet been made available.
