Royals open with win

Eastern Hancock opened the girls basketball season with a 50-48 victory over Elwood Wednesday night.

The Royals' victory was the first for new varsity coach Jeremy Powers, an Eastern Hancock alum who had previously been the head girls coach at Tri and head boys coach at Morton Memorial.

EH trailed 9-6 after a quarter and 21-18 at halftime, but rallied to tie the game at 34-34 at the end of three.

Junior forward Kaytlin Eastes led the Royals in scoring with 11 points. Sophomore Kristen Eischen had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Hannah Best added nine points and sophomore Kiersten Schrope had seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sophomore Alora Marshall also had three assists for the Royals.

EH next plays Saturday at Muncie South.

The rest of the county's girls basketball teams open Friday (G-C at Cambridge City, MV at Connersville) and Saturday (NP at Whiteland).
