Wednesday roundup

Mt. Vernon's baseball team beat North Central 12-8 Wednesday to improve to 1-1 on the season. The Marauders scored five times in the first and twice more in the second to build a 7-0 lead. Zach McKinney, Zach McFarland and Drew Kammerer all homered for the Marauders. Kammerer also had a double and four RBI. McKinney, Tyler Goff and Matt Lohrey had two hits each. McKinney struck out two and allowed two earned runs in 2 2/3 innings for the win. MV opens HHC play Friday against Delta.

New Palestine scored 17 first-inning runs in a 32-4 victory over Knightstown. Vincent Lovell pitched three innings for the victory. Jacob Barnes hit two doubles and drove in four runs in the first-inning outburst, while David Gunst homered for the Dragons, who are now 2-0. NP visits conference foe Pendleton Heights Friday.

In softball, New Palestine trailed by two going into the bottom of the fifth, but exploded for eight runs in the stanza to beat Franklin Central 8-2. Audrey East hit a two-run homer and Katie Prosser a bases-clearing double to key the inning. Alexa Cavin also had two hits to key a 10-hit NP attack. Lizzie Garrison struck out eight and scattered five hits to get the win for the Dragons (2-1). They next play Friday at home against Hamilton Heights.
