Friday roundup

New Palestine's baseball team posted a doubleheader sweep of Pendleton Heights on the road Friday night to open HHC play with a 2-0 record and improve to 4-0 on the year. In the first game, the Dragons won 6-1, largely because of a 5-run third. It started with four consecutive walks. Nick Smith's bases-clearing double was the big blow. Smith would also be the winning pitcher, scattering four hits. NP won the second game 4-2, scoring twice each in the fifth and sixth innings to rally. Brady Thomas had the big blow, a tiebreaking double in the sixth.

Softball
New Palestine beat Hamilton Heights 12-2, using eight consecutive hits in a 10-run second inning to improve to 3-1 on the season. Rachel Vawter was the winning pitcher for NP, surrendering no earned runs in five innings. Erin Lehman led NP with two doubles, including a three-run double to spark the second-inning rally. All of the Dragons' runs in that inning were scored with two outs. NP next plays Monday against Roncalli.

Eastern Hancock beat Shelbyville 2-1 on a seventh-inning squeeze play. Taylor Denny had a pair of hits and the lone RBI for the Royals, while Erica Truitt also had a pair of hits. Taylor Mercer and Caity Knopp scored the Royals' runs. Mercer was EH's winning pitcher, scattering five hits. EH had six hits.
