HHC baseball: All county teams unbeaten

All of the Hancock County teams remain unbeaten and atop the HHC baseball standings after last week's action.

That means Friday's doubleheader between Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central could put one team in the conference lead going into the second half of the season. Join Chris Lambert and Keith Meyers at 5 p.m. for the first pitch from Molinder Field.

Over the weekend, Mt. Vernon improved to 6-0 in conference play with a home sweep of Yorktown. Coach Eric Nielsen's club won 7-0 and 6-1 in the two games. In the opener, Logan Blair threw a two-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters for the Marauders. Blair also was 3-for-3 with two runs, a homer and three RBI. Zach McKinney also hit a solo homer in that contest to pace a seven-hit attack. In the second game, Matt Lohrey scattered four hits over 6 1/3 innings, and got support from Blair (2-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Jon Michael Weaver (2-4, 2 runs) and Tommy McCafferty (2 RBI). MV is now 9-1 on the season.

G-C stayed perfect in conference play with twin victories over Rushville to improve to 5-0 in HHC play. In the opening game, G-C won 12-2, with Curtiss Irving scattering seven hits over six innings. He also had three RBI at the plate. Mitch Gibson, Jayden Jackson and Clark Pence all had two hits and homers. Stan Garner also had a pair of hits. In the nightcap, the Cougars won 5-4, building a 5-1 lead in the third.  Irving was 2-3 with a double and two RBI at the plate. Jackson and Garrett Mitchell both homered for the Cougars, and John Scott had a two-hit performance. Pence allowed five hits and struck out nine, throwing a complete game. The Cougars are now 7-4.

New Palestine improved to 6-0 in conference play with a sweep of Shelbyville. The Dragons won the opener 12-3, with Nick Smith's 3-4 performance with two doubles and two RBI leading the attack. Smith was also the winning pitcher, scattering five hits and two earned runs over six innings. Jacob Barnes added a homer and three RBI. Brett Jackson, David Gunst, Reid Clark and Brady Thomas all had two hits for the Dragons, with Thomas hitting a homerun. NP had 14 hits against three Shelby pitchers. In the nightcap, the Dragons used some last-inning heroics to beat the Bears 2-1. Brian Page drove in the winning run in the seventh, sealing the victory. He also pitched six innings, allowing two hits, striking out seven and one unearned run, but took a no-decision as Reid Clark got the win in relief. NP had three hits -- by Clark, Page and Tyler Peper. Clark's hit drove in a fifth-inning run that tied the game. NP is now 10-1 overall.

Essentially, the league is a three-horse race between the county schools, although Pendleton Heights still has a shot, with two games left against Mt. Vernon and one against Greenfield-Central and only three conference losses. Yorktown is four games back in the loss column, but only has six games remaining. It must sweep NP this weekend and then hope to sweep G-C later on in the year to have a shot.
