NP boys, MV girls win titles

Had a great night of basketball tonight as the New Palestine boys and Mt. Vernon girls won the Hancock County championships.

The boys game was a down-to-the-wire nail-biter. The pace stayed slow -- at Greenfield-Central's liking -- for much of the first three quarters. The Cougars led 19-17 at half and 32-30 after three -- and built a 27-21 lead in the third. But it was nip-and-tuck all the way. G-C appeared to have the upper hand when Josh Mayes hit a 3 with 1:18 left, but NP's Justin Ikerd answered to knot it at 44 and, after a couple of misses for each team, send the game into OT. Ikerd hit a triple on the Dragons' first possession of the extra session, and NP never trailed from there, winning 54-48.

The win gave NP its fourth county title in eight years -- the third time beating G-C in overtime in a championship game.

Mayes scored 15 to lead G-C -- all on 3s -- while Jordan Conley added eight points and a lot of big rebounds. Ikerd also hit five 3s and scored 15, while Josh Penley scored 17 points -- 15 in the second half -- and was our tournament MVP. Penley, Ikerd and Michael Morris represented NP on the All-Tourney team, along with Mayes and Derek Conley of G-C.

Mt. Vernon won the consolation game 74-68 over Eastern Hancock behind 31 points from Quinn Williams and 17 from C.J. Coleman -- both All-Tourney Team selections. Dustin Smith led EH with 30 points. He had 53 over the two nights and was also on the All-Tourney Team.

In the girls tournament, MV used a 27-4 run over the second and third quarters to pull away from NP and win 55-32. Jessica Brown led the Marauders with 17 points, while Bethany Murrell scored 16 for the Dragons. G-C won the consolation game over Eastern Hancock.
