Saturday tourney wrap: MV wins swim sectional

Mt. Vernon won the New Palestine girls swim sectional, nipping Connersville 354-352 in the team score. Richmond (315) was one point ahead of the host Dragons for third place. Greenfield-Central was sixth with 263 points, Eastern Hancock ninth with 55 points.


MV winners were the 200 medley relay team of Jessica Hantz, Ellen Werner, Madeline Powell and Jessica Blackburn (1:56.53) and Lauren Reifel in diving (456.10). 

Emily Trimpe was NP's lone sectional champion, finishing the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.54. 

G-C had three individual sectional champions: Carly Fernandes in the 200 IM (2:14.81) and 100 backstroke (1:00.13) and Taylor Johnson in the 100 butterfly (1:00.30). 

The individual sectional champions move on to next weekend's State Finals at the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI, The top divers move on to the diving regional in mid-week.

Several local swimmers had top-three finishes. For Mt. Vernon, Werner in the 100 breaststroke, Powell in the 100 butterfly finished second. Third-place finishes went to Powell in the 100 backstroke, Blackburn in the 100 freestyle and the 200 free relay team of Powell, Hantz, Eve Gonzales and Blackburn.

For NP, runners-up were Erin Trimpe in the 500 freestyle, Emily Trimpe in the 200 freestyle and the 200 free relay team of Emily Trimpe, Jordan Rogers, Karen Emminger and Olivia Ayer.

G-C's runner-up was Johnson in the 50 freestyle. The 200 medley relay team of Fernandes, Taylor Cermak, Johnson and Bethany Weldon finished third.

Wrestling
New Palestine advanced eight wrestlers and Greenfield-Central seven from the Perry Meridian wrestling regional Saturday.

Three of the county wrestlers will move on to the New Castle as regional champions. NP's Tommy Cash improved to 39-0 with three victories at 106, including a 7-3 decision over Ben Davis' C.J. Whitten in the championship match.

G-C had two regional champions: Josh Farrell (138), who defeated Perry Meridian's Nick Bova 9-4 in the title match to improve to 32-3. Also winning was Ian Early (195), who beat Warren Central's Dyrek Chowning 13-3 in the title match. Early is now 36-1.

Also moving on from NP were runner-up Taylor Fee at 113 (31-4), third-place finishers Robbie Elsea at 138 (35-6), Nick Ulrey at 145 (32-6), Connor Robinson at 160 (43-7) and Cameron Denney at 195 (29-12); and fourth-place finishers Rylan McCarty at 120 (21-13) and Brian Wagner at 170 (28-9).

Also moving on from G-C were runners-up Sam Locke at 126 (28-8), Dezmen McGinley at 170 (31-5) and Austin Gearlds at 220 (31-4), third-place finisher Austin Rose at 152 (28-7) and fourth-place finisher Tyler Beeson at 285 (21-12).


The top four wrestlers from each 16-wrestler bracket at the New Castle semistate next Saturday will move on to the State Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
