County Tourney: Marauders win

Mt. Vernon was impressive tonight, jumping out to a 16-0 lead early and keeping the lead in that ballpark the rest of the way to win back-to-back county championships.

The Marauders beat Greenfield-Central 65-41. MV was on fire in the first quarter -- using its changing defenses to ignite an outstanding offense that outscored the Cougars 27-8 over the opening eight minutes. Things settled down from there, but MV stayed in control, largely because of the efforts of Daniel Turner. The 6-6 UWGB recruit had a big night, with 20 points and a slew of rebounds and steals. D'Armond Davis had five blocked shots inside. P.J. Hubert scored 10 points, as did PG Clayton Sanders -- the guy who is usually on the dishing end of Marauder baskets.

Wes McQueeney got G-C going with three first-half 3s and finished with 11 points.

If the two teams weren't familiar enough with each other, they'll go at it again next Friday night at G-C. We will have that broadcast as our Game of the Week.

Eastern Hancock won a back-and-forth consolation game 65-60, led by Steven Stunda's 29 points and 22 from Dustin Smith. Trevor Baker scored 17 for NP.

Also, congratulations to the Marauder girls team, which beat G-C 47-36 to win their county championship and break the Cougars' three-year stranglehold on the title. New Palestine won the consolation game 51-27 over Eastern Hancock.

It was a very enjoyable and intense two days of basketball. The crowds at all of the venues were great and the games were entertaining. It's now time to settle down and get ready for the second half of the regular season, which for us begins next Friday night.
