County final tonight

LISTEN LIVE at 5:40 p.m. to the Hancock County boys championship
3A #10 Mt. Vernon (7-2) vs. Greenfield-Central (2-6)
Saturday, Jan. 2, 2009

Both teams had to survive close games tonight to win. The Marauders trailed by as many as eight points in the first half, but used a 15-7 third quarter to take the lead and eventually hold off New Palestine 53-48. The defending champs are looking to win their second straight title and their third in four years. MV is making its fourth straight appearance in the title game.

Greenfield-Central returned to the title game for the first time since the 2005-06 season with a 55-53 win over Eastern Hancock. The Cougars rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to win their second game of the season.

We will have the game for you at 5:40 p.m. -- tipoff at 6 p.m. from New Palestine.

The consolation game will be played simultaneously in the New Palestine auxiliary gym between the host Dragons (4-3) and Eastern Hancock (5-3).

On the girls side, the matchups are the same. Mt. Vernon used a big third quarter to pull away from New Palestine and win 48-27, while Greenfield-Central defeated Eastern Hancock 64-14.

G-C is now 11-2. MV, ranked #10 in 3A just like the Marauder boys, is now 9-2. NP (4-6) and EH (5-7) will play in the consolation game. Both tipoffs are approximately 7:45 p.m.
