Track and field

Courtney Edon finished her decorated high school career by standing on the podium at the Robert C. Haugh IU Track and Field Stadium Saturday night.

The New Palestine senior finished fifth in the 3200 meter run at the IHSAA Track and Field State Finals, posting a time of 11:10.44. Edon, who will run at Ball State University next year, led a large Dragon delegation at the State Finals. Waverly Neer of Culver Military -- who was also the cross country state champ -- won the event with a state-record 10:20.66.

Junior Corinne Zehner also scored for the Dragons in the 300 hurdles, placing eighth in 45.18 seconds. She was three seconds shy of Westview junior Skyler Carpenter, whose 42.03 time set a new State Finals record.

In the 100 hurdles, Zehner just missed qualifying for the finals, as she was 12th in the prelims with a time of 15.38 -- missing the cutoff by 0.29 seconds. The champ's time was 14.36, set by Carpenter.

Lauren Joray was 15th in the 800 meters in 2:19.52 -- the champ, Park Tudor's Abby Farley, broke her own state record in 2:08.91.

Sonya Napariu placed 21st in the discus with a top throw of 113'8" in her three throws. The state champ, Southridge's Cassie Wertman, threw 143'4".

Nicole Fluegel was 22nd in the 200 meters, with a time of 26.26 seconds -- 2.16 behind state champ Morgan Yeadon of Pike.

NP's 4x100 meter relay team of Brooke Basaran, Fluegel, Zehner and Lauren Kehrt finished 18th with a time of 50.43, while state champ Lawrence North clocked 47.02 seconds.

The Dragons' 4x800 meter relay team of Morgan Carpenter, Caitlynn Edon, Courtney Edon and Joray was 19th in 9:45.06. Carmel won the title in 9:13.01.

NP's seven team points earned by Edon and Zehner placed the Dragons' 30th overall in the State Finals. Lawrence North and Fort Wayne Northrop share the title with 42 points. Westview -- led by Carpenter's three state championships -- finished third with 38 points.

One more event for the spring sports season in Hancock County -- high school golf. The sectional round will be played Monday at Hawk's Tail in Greenfield.
