Sectional championship Saturday night

Tonight's scores:
Mt. Vernon 52, Hamilton Heights 37
Shelbyville 55, Rushville 52

Listen to the cham
pionship game at 7:10 p.m. Saturday between the Marauders (20-2) and Golden Bears (11-8) here.

MV won its first sectional game since 2002 by making an early statement -- P.J. Hubert drained 3s on the Marauders' first two possessions and they never trailed from there. MV led 16-8 after a quarter and pushed the lead to 20-10 early in the second. HH cut it to three at one point in the third, but Daniel Turner scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to help the Marauders pull away.

MV's D'Armond Davis scored 11, while Hubert had 10 and Jake Stafford had 8 on 8-of-12 FT shooting.

MV won the game at the line -- going 22-for-34. Turner was 7-of-12, while Davis was 5-of-6 from the stripe.

The Marauders also held HH's Austin Etherington to 11 points, as he battled foul trouble most of the night. Freshman Alex Etherington had nine.

In the second game, Shelbyville held on to beat Rushville 55-52. The Golden Bears had a huge early lead, but Rushville came storming back and tied the game on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 52, Shelby's Patrick Ellis stole an inbounds pass in the final minute for the second straight night. That set up John Krise, who hit three free throws in the final 29 seconds to give the Bears the lead for good, while Rushville missed three shots that would have tied the game on two possessions. Ben Kramer led Shelby with 12 points, while John Hartnett had 11 and Ellis 10. Jon Thompson led Rushville with 20 and Spencer Comer had 15.

MV beat Shelbyville 99-82 when they played in December. Should be a fun matchup. We're looking forward to bringing it to you on www.crosscomsports.com!
