All four Hancock County teams were in action Tuesday night, and two remain alive in the IHSAA boys basketball tournament.
New Palestine and Eastern Hancock both posted first-round sectional wins and advanced to Friday night. Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon both fell in their openers.
New Palestine 51, Franklin 45: Michael Morris had 18 points as the Dragons pulled away from the Grizzly Cubs in the second half. NP improved to 15-6 on the season with the victory. NP trailed 10-4 early and was behind 20-19 at the half before rallying to take the lead in the third quarter and never relinquishing it. Morris hit several shots down the stretch to lead the Dragons. NP outscored Franklin 12-5 in the third to take a 31-25 lead going into the final eight minutes.
Morris hit 8-of-12 shots from the floor to score his 18 points, and also had seven rebounds. Josh Penley had 13 points and nine boards. Brandon Collins had eight points and three rebounds. Solomon Haynes added seven points. Reid Clark had five rebounds inside.
The Dragons will advance to play Whiteland on Friday night, a rematch of the Warriors' 88-81 win on Jan. 21. The game will tip off at 6 p.m., join Andrew & Chris for the play-by-play at 5:35 at HancockCountySports.com.
Eastern Hancock 68, Hagerstown 51: A big second quarter turned a 9-8 lead into a 30-16 halftime edge, and the Royals kept pulling away from there. Victor Vincz scored 23 points to help EH avenge a defeat from Friday night.
The Royals are now 11-10 on the year. They will face Cambridge City Lincoln at 6 p.m. Friday at Hagerstown.
Guerin Catholic 35, Mt. Vernon 28: Both teams' defenses were stifling, holding the opponent to below 35 percent shooting. But the 10th-ranked Golden Eagles used theirs to take a lead in the third quarter, turning a couple of steals by Riley Rapp and a couple of charges taken by Zach Hufford to get the defensive stands, and cashed in on the other end. Guerin turned a 15-13 halftime deficit into a 23-20 lead going into the fourth, and then used a two-minute possession that ended in an Aaron Brennan putback with 4:05 left that made it 25-20.
MV had two open 3-pointers to tie the game in the final two and a half minutes, but both were long and Guerin was able to secure the rebound.
C.J. Coleman had 12 points to lead MV. Anthony Burnett added nine. Stephen Turner had 10 boards. Bryan Hall scored 10 points -- including five fourth-quarter free throws to help put the game away -- to lead Guerin. Brennan, a solid sophomore who has been drawing major college interest, had nine points and seven rebounds.
MV's season ends at 13-8. Guerin is now 18-5 and advances to face Howe in Friday's semifinals.
Interestingly, Tuesday's game was the second-fewest points ever allowed by Mt. Vernon in a tournament game (and the fewest ever allowed in a sectional game). The only game that eclipsed it was a 45-30 regional victory against Greensburg in 2010. The 28 points were the fewest scored by MV in a tournament game.
Connersville 58, Greenfield-Central 27: The Spartans knocked off G-C for the second time in a week. Connersville jumped out to a 33-12 halftime edge and never looked back in the victory. G-C's season finishes at 3-18. Connersville will face #2 Pendleton Heights in Friday's semifinal.

Friday wrap: Dragons beat MV 61-38
New Palestine was impressive tonight, scoring the game's first 13 points and holding MV without a field goal for the first 4+ minutes of each of the first two quarters. The Dragons then staved off every Marauder run from the end of the first quarter on en route to a 61-38 victory over MV Friday night.
NP's defense was strong, holding the Marauders to 26 percent shooting in the contest. Meanwhile, the Dragons hit 52 percent from the floor (21-of-40).
Justin Ikerd was key in the early run, hitting two 3-pointers to give the Dragons an 8-0 edge, which was later pushed to 13-0. Michael Morris scored seven first-half points and Ikerd nine. NP's lead was never inside double-digits after the quick start. NP led 15-5 after a quarter, and after a Marauder run at the end of the first half, Solomon Haynes hit an off-balance 3-pointer to make it a 25-11 game at the break.
The Dragons continued to get strong balance and defense in pulling ahead 41-21 after three quarters.
Morris had 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting, to go along with seven rebounds. The Dragons held a 32-21 rebounding edge. Ikerd hit four 3-pointers for his 14 points. Solomon Haynes had eight points and four boards. Reid Clark added eight points on 4-of-6 shooting, seven rebounds and four assists. Josh Penley had six points, four assists and contributed strong defense with five steals. Brandon Jonas had five rebounds as New Palestine had contributions from everywhere. Wade Whitaker contributed strong defense off the bench, and Brandon Collins did the same, with five points and four boards.
NP is now 13-6 and 5-2 in HHC play, with a game next Friday at Greenwood. MV is 12-6 (4-2) with two games remaining -- Tuesday at Westfield and Friday at Yorktown. The Yorktown game will be broadcast live by HancockCountySports.com.
Rushville 56, Greenfield-Central 39: The game was close early, but Rushville pulled ahead in the second quarter.
Jordan Keener had 19 points to lead the Cougars (2-16). Dallas Pribble added eight points and Mason Irbe five for G-C. The Cougars are back in action Saturday, honoring senior David Johnston on Senior Night when they host Cambridge City Lincoln.

Seven Hancock County wrestlers competed tonight in the IHSAA State Finals round of 16. Four -- two each from Greenfield-Central and New Palestine -- advanced to the quarterfinals with Friday-night victories at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
G-C junior Josh Farrell, the semistate champ at 138, defeated Franklin's Jacob Stevenson with a 23-8 tech fall to move on. Farrell (37-3) will meet South Bend Clay's Mitchell Hartman (44-5) in the quarterfinals.
At 195, G-C's Ian Early (40-2) defeated Spencer Raypole of Carroll (Allen) 5-4 to advance. Early will face Kourtney Berry (30-0) of Merrilville in the quarters. Berry was the Merrillville semistate champ.
At 160, New Palestine's Connor Robinson -- who has put together a string of big tournament victories -- improved to 37-8 with a 10-5 victory over Leo's Isaac Steury. Robinson will meet Tsali Lough (45-2) of Terre Haute South in the quarters. Lough is the Evansville semistate champ.
At 106, NP's Tommy Cash improved to 44-1 with an 11-4 decision over Evansville Memorial's Damon Kuhn. Cash will meet Hanover Central's Stevan Micic (44-0) in the quarterfinals. Micic is the Merrillville semistate champ.
Three county wrestlers were defeated in their first-round matches. NP's Taylor Fee (113) lost by fall in his first-round match to undefeated Fort Wayne semistate champ Jared Brooks of Warsaw. Several Hancock County athletes were named to the IFCA All-Region 8 football team. The recipients of this are also eligible to be selected for the IFCA North-South All-Star Classic in July.

Marauders win sectional 77-32
Mt. Vernon showed why it's the second-ranked team in Class 3A tonight, outscoring Chatard 77-32 in the sectional championship game at Arlington High School.
The Marauders were suffocating on defense, forcing several steals & deflections and turning them into fast-break points.
MV trailed 5-4 early, but then went on a sizeable run that never seemed to stop. The Marauders finished the first quarter with a 15-2 spurt that put them up 19-7 after one, then started the second on a 12-2 run that saw the lead pushed to 31-9.
Sophomore forward Erica Moore had 18 of her game-high 24 points in the first half, and when she scored her 24th point, she had as many as the opposing team.
Jessica Brown then had a big second half, scoring 13 of her 19 points as MV extended a 39-16 halftime lead and turned it into a 59-24 edge by the end of the third quarter. MV scored at least 18 points in each quarter, and held Chatard to single-digits in each.
Four Marauders scored in double-figures, as Makenzi Reasor added 11 points and Rachel Houck 10.
The Marauders are now 20-5 on the season, and have won county, conference and sectional championships. They'll play in the Lebanon regional next week, facing the host Tigers in the 10 a.m. first semifinal. Lebanon beat No. 8 Western Boone 68-61 in the sectional title game at WeBo. The second semifinal will feature Tri-West and No. 10 Edgewood. TW beat Indian Creek 75-70 in OT at Beech Grove, while Edgewood beat Brown County 56-48 at Owen Valley. The championship game will be at 7 p.m.

Semifinals: Marauders in sectional final, Dragons fall in 4th
Mt. Vernon is one game away from its second straight sectional title -- and the fourth under coach Julie Shelton -- after a blowout victory over Howe in tonight's semifinal at Arlington.
Meanwhile, New Palestine saw its season end after losing an 11-point second-half lead and falling to Franklin 60-52 in the 4A semifinal at Franklin.
The Marauders were never challenged in their game against Howe, leading 32-0 after a quarter and allowing just one point in the first half. Hoop update
On Monday night, Eastern Hancock celebrated its Coaches vs. Cancer girls basketball game, but a furious second-half Royal rally fell just short in a 47-41 loss to Blue River.
EH trailed 9-2 after a quarter and 27-9 at halftime. The Royals used a 14-3 third quarter to slash the deficit to 30-23 after three, but the Vikings staved off the comeback.
Kristen Eischen led the Royals with eight points and 10 rebounds. Kiersten Schrope had seven points, seven boards and four assists. Hannah Best also had seven points and four assists. Lauren Harmon and Kaytlin Eastes added six points each.
The Royals (11-5) continue a three-game week this week by traveling to Tri on Thursday and hosting Waldron at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
Several girls games are on the docket for midweek. On Tuesday, the Greenfield-Central Cougars (11-6/4-2) conclude HHC play at Yorktown. On Wednesday, the New Palestine Dragons (9-9) look to extend their three-game winning streak at a tough Lawrence Central outfit. And on Thursday, the aforementioned EH-Tri game.

Saturday night
No shattered backboards tonight, just a couple of games where Hancock County teams scored a season-high in points, but only one won.
Greenfield-Central won its first game of the year by beating Shelbyville 66-55. The Cougars scored a season-high 66 points -- matter of fact, it was 23 points more than their high that had been set last week when they totaled 43 against Triton Central. The Cougars were led by Mason Irbe's 24 points -- a career high for the G-C junior.
Tyler Batton had 15 points and Jordan Keener 14 for G-C. Grant Wolfe added seven points.
G-C jumped up to a fifth-place tie in the HHC with the victory, as the Cougars are now 1-11 (1-3). The Cougars next play Friday at Pendleton Heights, then host Eastern Hancock Saturday in a game we'll broadcast at HancockCountySports.com.
Whiteland 88, New Palestine 81: The Dragons scored a season-high 81 points -- including 38 in a fourth quarter that saw the two teams combine for 70 points -- but fell on the road to Whiteland.
NP fell behind quickly -- Whiteland roared out to a 21-11 lead after a quarter -- and kept chipping back into the game. Whiteland led 33-25 at the half, but scored 23 in the third to take a 56-43 lead going into the wild final quarter.
Josh Penley scored a season-high 23 points for the Dragons. He hit 8-of-14 from the floorMichael Morris added 20 points, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. The Dragons hit eight 3-pointers in the game, and shot 49 percent from the floor (30-61). Brandon Collins tied his career high with 18 points, hitting 7-of-10 shots. Reid Clark and Solomon Haynes scored nine each. Clark also had a game-high seven rebounds. Penley had four assists and four steals, while Haynes had three assists.
Meanwhile, Whiteland shot a blistering 65 percent from the floor (25-38) and hit 75 percent from the 3-point arc (12-16). The Warriors also shot 26-of-33 from the line.

Saturday afternoon wrap: NP girls win
The New Palestine girls basketball team used a fast start to build an early lead and race to a 52-35 victory at Rushville Saturday afternoon.
Bethany Murrell scored 17 points to lead the Dragons, and Lauren Tieman added 12 points. The victory for the Dragons was their second victory at Rushville's Memorial Gym in school history -- 19 games total -- and first since 2002. It was their first victory against Rushville on any floor since 2004.
The victory was the Dragons' third straight on the year. They conclude the season with two more road games, Wednesday at Lawrence Central and Saturday afternoon at Pendleton Heights.
The Dragons raced ahead to a 14-7 lead in the opening quarter, using a strong defensive effort that held Rushville to 32 percent shooting in the first half and 27 percent in the second. Rushville's only lead was on the opening possession of the game. NP led 26-15 at halftime and then pushed the lead to 17 points at the end of the third, at 44-27, when Murrell drilled a 3-pointer at the gun to give the Dragons their biggest lead of the game to that point.
Murrell added seven rebounds to her total. Tieman had five boards.
Guard Kyeligh Smock also added a strong all-around game with eight points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Guard Tori Stephenson had eight points on 3-of- shooting from the floor. She also had three assists. Abby Seifert, the HHC's leading rebounder, had eight rebounds.
Forward Casey Yager had a strong start for Rushville, scoring 10 first-half points to keep the Lions in the game. Yager finished with 11 rebounds for a double-double. NP's defense held Rushville's leading scorer -- freshman Sarah Cook -- to six points. Rushville was also without the services of second-leading scorer and strong all-around player Mackenzie Campbell, who was unavailale due to injury.
NP is now 9-9 and 4-2 in HHC play.
Eastern Hancock vs. Waldron: The Royals' game against Waldron was postponed due to weather. It will be played at 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 28, with a varsity-only game.
Swimming
Greenfield-Central competed at Fishers in a dual-meet invitational.
The Cougar boys dropped two narrow meets to Carroll (Allen) and Fishers. Carroll beat the Cougars 101.5-82.5, Fishers defeated the Cougars 95-91 in a close meet.
G-C's girls also fell to both teams, with Carly Fernandes winning events in each meet.

Mt. Vernon's boys basketball team emphatically extended its winning streak to three with a 67-21 victory over Knightstown on Thursday night.
MV set the tone early with defense, using four steals-turned-layups in the opening minutes to build an 11-2 lead and not looking back. MV also controlled the offensive glass in the victory. MV led 19-4 after a quarter and 37-11 at halftime. Sophomore guard C.J. Coleman had several of the early deflections and finished the game with 19 points. Junior guard Anthony Burnett added 13 points.
All five MV starters scored at least eight points, with Stephen Turner scoring 10 and Alex Payne and Dan Werner eight each. Freshman Zach Spears came off the bench to score seven points. Werner also played strong defense on Knightstown's Clay Ratliff, the Panthers' leading scorer coming into the night. Turner did the same against Knightstown's post players, denying the Panthers the opportunity to get the ball to their big men.
Dakota Smucker led Knightstown with six points. Ratliff scored five.
MV (9-4) is next in action Friday 1/27 at Connersville. Knightstown (1-10) will visit Shenandoah Friday.

Saturday wrap
Just two Hancock County basketball teams were in action today before things really heat up next week, and the two Mt. Vernon basketball teams split the two games.
In the afternoon, the MV girls beat Noblesville 58-46. Center Makenzi Reasor had 22 points, including 12 in the first quarter to stake MV to an early 18-14 lead. Junior guard Rachel Houck added 19 points for the second-ranked Marauders, who are now 13-3 on the year. You can listen to the archived broadcast here.
C.J. Coleman sparked the MV boys early against New Castle, but the host Trojans pulled away in the third and won 64-49. New Castle outscored MV 25-11 in the third to take the lead. MV is now 6-4 heading into next week's double-weekend -- home vs. Rushville Friday, at Howe Saturday.

Dragons 2nd, Marauders 8th at NP Invitational: New Palestine's wrestling team placed second to Roncalli, while Mt. Vernon was eighth at the New Palestine Invitational.
NP totaled 241 points, finishing behind Roncalli (266.5). Martinsville (191) was third and East Central (169) fourth. Columbia City (105), Beech Grove (94), Rushville (84) at Mt. Vernon (63) took the other places.
NP had four champions. Tommy Cash (106) won with a fall and a 10-1 decision over Roncalli's Vance Ellis in the title match. Gordon Wagner (126) also won with two falls and then a 12-4 major decision over Roncalli's Ryan Hammer in the title match. Robbie Elsea (138) defeated MV's C.J. Eastman in the title match 8-2. Nick Ulrey (145) also won, defeating Martinsville's Levi Hess 5-3 in the final match after winning two matches by fall.
Taylor Fee (113), Brian Wagner (170) and Cameron Denney (195) all placed second for NP. Rylan McCarty (120) and Connor Robinson (160) finished third.
Eastman was MV's highest-placing wrestler. The Marauders' Ryan Barker (145) placed third.
The two teams will compete again Saturday at the HHC meet at Pendleton Heights.

Schedule changes
Upcoming NCAA legislation that has killed the impending Hoosier Heritage Conference girls basketball classic at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Jan. 21 has also caused changes to our broadcast schedule.
We had planned to broadcast two games from the Hinkle Classic, and several games that weekend. We will continue to broadcast the Knightstown-MV boys game on Thursday, Jan. 19.
However, we have schedule changes for the rest of the weekend.
On Friday, Jan. 20, we will broadcast the Mt. Vernon at Greenfield-Central girls game, which was originally to be played at Hinkle. Because of that, we will not be able to broadcast the Eastern Hancock at Lapel game that was originally on our schedule that evening. We are no longer planning to broadcast any games on Saturday, Jan. 21 as of this time.

EH has some impressive wins on the year -- especially against Blue River, Frankton and Knightstown. Burris has victories over 3A Yorktown and 4A Portage.

County finals: Dragon boys, Marauder girls repeat
The Hancock County championship trophies are staying put after this year, as the New Palestine boys and Mt. Vernon girls both used big fourth-quarter runs to win their respective titles tonight at Mt. Vernon.
In the boys game, NP won 61-55, largely spurred by a 16-1 run that spanned the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth that saw a seven-point Marauder lead turn into an eight-point Dragon advantage.
New Palestine junior forward Michael Morris keyed the second-half run, hitting two 3-pointers and scoring 16 of his 26 points after the break. Morris hit 9-of-12 from the floor, nearly all from the perimeter, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. He was also a perfect 4-of-4 from the line. Senior Josh Penley added 11 points and three boards -- scoring several of his points down the stretch to help the Dragons build and maintain their second-half lead. Justin Ikerd hit a big third-quarter 3-pointer in the game-turning run and finished with six points and seven assists. Reid Clark had six points and five boards.
MV sophomore C.J. Coleman helped key an early Marauder edge, as he scored 15 of his team-high 21 points in the first half. Coleman's backcourt mate, junior Anthony Burnett, scored six first-quarter points and finished with eight. Alex Payne hit two fourth-quarter 3-pointers to try to lead the Marauders back from what became an 11-point deficit and scored 11 points on perfect 4-for-4 shooting. Stephen Turner also scored 11 points for the Marauders.
NP is now 8-1 and next plays Jan. 6 against Delta. MV is 5-3 and next plays Jan. 6 at Greenfield-Central in a game we will broadcast live on HancockCountySports.com.
