24 hours earlier than normal, we had a big night of hoops across the state and in Hancock County tonight.
New Palestine and Greenfield-Central both won, while Eastern Hancock dropped a 52-45 decision to Triton Central in the game we broadcast at HancockCountySports.com.
This weekend, the girls take center stage. We'll broadcast New Palestine vs. Franklin at 7:15 p.m. Friday at HancockCountySports.com. We will also broadcast a sectional championship game Saturday night.
Let's look back at Thursday's games:
New Palestine 54, Franklin 39: The Dragons took the lead with 15-7 second quarter that put them ahead by five at halftime, then outscored the Grizzly Cubs 17-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a big road victory.
Junior Michael Morris continues to lead the Dragons, tonight scoring 15 points and grabbing four boards. He hit 6-of-13 from the floor. Reid Clark had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. He hit 5-of-6 from the floor and his only free throw attempt. Josh Penley added nine points on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with four assists. Brandon Collins had seven points, four assists and five steals.
The Dragons hit 48 percent from the floor. Franklin shot 41 percent.
The Dragons are now 12-5. They next play at home Tuesday against Westfield, then travel to Mt. Vernon next Friday 2/17 in a game we'll broadcast at HancockCountySports.com.
Greenfield-Central 46, Knightstown 44: Jordan Keener hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Cougars their second victory of the year.
Keener had 19 points, including the NBA-range shot at the buzzer, to lead the Cougars, who trailed by eight points in the fourth quarter. Mason Irbe had eight points and Grant Wolfe six for the Cougars. Anthony Peck led Knightstown with 18.
The Cougars next play Friday 2/17 at Rushville in the first half of a double-weekend which includes a Saturday home game against Cambridge City Lincoln.
Triton Central 52, Eastern Hancock 45: The Royals held TC without a field goal for the first 7:15, but the Tigers rallied, using a 14-6 second quarter to take a 20-18 halftime lead, then pulling away led by center Luke Stephenson, who scored eight fourth-quarter points. TC opened the fourth with a 10-4 spurt, and its lead vacillated between three and five points for much of the final quarter before hitting free throws at the end.
Austin Pitman led TC with 14 points. Stephenson had eight in the fourth quarter, and two other Tigers scored in double-figures as TC improved to 7-9 on the year.
Guard Victor Vincz had a strong offensive game for the Royals, scoring 19 points. Senior Jared Pyle scored 13 points for EH (9-8).
The Royals are next in action Tuesday at Alexandria.
Mt. Vernon was idle, but next plays at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Central. The Bears beat Warren Central 59-56 on a last-second 3 from IU recruit Jeremy Hollowell. MV beat Warren 62-47 on Monday.

Thursday wrap: MV boys, EH girls win again
Mt. Vernon's boys basketball team emphatically extended its winning streak to three with a 67-21 victory over Knightstown on Thursday night.
MV set the tone early with defense, using four steals-turned-layups in the opening minutes to build an 11-2 lead and not looking back. MV also controlled the offensive glass in the victory. MV led 19-4 after a quarter and 37-11 at halftime. Sophomore guard C.J. Coleman had several of the early deflections and finished the game with 19 points. Junior guard Anthony Burnett added 13 points.
All five MV starters scored at least eight points, with Stephen Turner scoring 10 and Alex Payne and Dan Werner eight each. Freshman Zach Spears came off the bench to score seven points. Werner also played strong defense on Knightstown's Clay Ratliff, the Panthers' leading scorer coming into the night. Turner did the same against Knightstown's post players, denying the Panthers the opportunity to get the ball to their big men.
Dakota Smucker led Knightstown with six points. Ratliff scored five.
MV (9-4) is next in action Friday 1/27 at Connersville. Knightstown (1-10) will visit Shenandoah Friday.
Girls basketball

Hannah Best and Kristen Eischen each had 11 points to lead EH. Eischen also had seven boards. Alora Marshall had seven points and nine rebounds. Guard Kiersten Schrope also added seven points for EH.
The Royals are now 11-4, and host Waldron at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be a varsity-only contest.

Cougars beat Knightstown
Greenfield-Central's girls basketball team scored 21 fourth-quarter points to pull away from Knightstown and win 48-35 in the Cougars' annual "Pink Game" to fight breast cancer.
G-C led 10-8 after a quarter, 20-15 at the half and 27-20 after three before pulling away in the final eight minutes. LaRae Cruz scored 15 points to lead the Cougars. Junior Katie Peters added 10. Emily Koers and Regan Lewis both scored seven each.
The Cougars (10-5) are next in action Tuesday at home against Muncie Central.

Friday wrap: Heading toward county
All four Hancock County boys teams -- and one of the girls teams -- were in action at home tonight, with several big performances throughout.
Eastern Hancock 56, Knightstown 51: The Royals took an early lead and never looked back in a five-point victory. EH led by four points at the end of the first quarter and never trailed in the game. Knightstown kept within striking distance, but EH's lead was often between 3-8 points much of the night.
The game was a coming-out party for EH's Cody Clark, who had 17 points and eight rebounds and commanded the paint inside. The Royals' Jared Pyle also had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, including 10 in the second quarter as the Royals opened up an eight-point lead -- one that would be whittled to four at halftime, but would be pushed back up to nine by the end of the third. Victor Vincz would hit four late free throws to help seal the victory, among his nine points.
Clay Ratliff led three Panthers in double-figures with 16 points. Freshman point guard Jake Kwisz had 13 for Knightstown.
EH (4-2) is back in action Saturday night at Cambridge City Lincoln, and then again Tuesday at Blue River. Knightstown is now 1-5.

Dragon forward Michael Morris -- their leading scorer on the year -- had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. He hit 7-of-9 shots from the floor and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the line. Justin Ikerd had his second straight double-figure game with 18 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Josh Penley had 17 points and three assists, while Reid Clark added eight points and five boards. Solomon Haynes added seven assists and six rebounds.
The Dragons shot 50 percent from the floor and won despite a 30-point effort by Morristown's Dylan Langkabel.
NP is now 4-1, and will be back in action Saturday night at Franklin Central. The Dragons then will travel to Beech Grove Wednesday evening, for a game we will broadcast on HancockCountySports.com.

Yorktown 84, Greenfield-Central 31: The Tigers built a big lead and handed the Cougars their seventh straight loss. G-C is now also 0-2 in HHC play. The Cougars' next game will be Dec. 27 in the Hancock County Tournament semifinal round at New Palestine.

The game was a see-saw contest early, but Knightstown took the lead for good in the second quarter, feeding sophomore post player Emily Thomas. She finished with 14 points, scoring 10 in the middle quarters.
EH was led by Kristen Eischen and Hannah Best, who each scored 11 points. Best hit two 3-pointers to help lead a Royal comeback. EH tried to rally from a late 11-point deficit, led by Best's second 3 of the game, but the Panthers were able to hold on. Eischen had 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Kaytlin Eastes had seven rebounds and five blocked shots, and Kiersten Schrope had six steals for the Royals.
EH is now 6-2 on the year. Knightstown is 6-3. The Royals next play Saturday afternoon at Northeastern.

Basketball weekend
Lots of basketball this weekend starts tonight, with a BIG girls game between New Palestine and 3A No. 3 Mt. Vernon.
The Dragons are 3-5 against a top-25 schedule, but could easily be 7-1 as four of their losses have been in down-to-the-wire games. The Marauders are 6-2, with both defeats to 4A programs having strong years. The game features four players who will be playing at the next level next year -- MV's Makenzi Reasor (Indiana State) and Jessica Brown (Indiana Wesleyan) along with NP's Bethany Murrell (Florida Gulf Coast) and Tori Stephenson (Danville Area CC).
The game also features two of the area's top rebounders in NP's Lauren Tieman and Abby Seifert -- the latter of which is averaging more than 10 rebounds per game -- and MV's Reasor and Anna Olson. Both teams are senior-laden, and this could be the final meeting for these teams as currently constituted.
The other big key is the HHC race. MV can take a full-game lead on the conference going into the Christmas break with games remaining against Delta, Greenfield-Central and Shelbyville. Should the Dragons win, it would forge a 4-way tie at the top of the conference, with tonight's two participants, G-C and Pendleton Heights -- who are both 3-1 in league play.

Sophomore Kristen Eischen does a lot of the work up front. But Knightstown poses a tough test. The Panthers are experienced, with four players averaging between 9-11 points per game, and they are coming off a victory over New Castle last week. Knightstown is 5-3.

The Dragons have dominated the series recently, and have a deep, senior-laden team that's 3-1 on the year. Morristown does feature one of the state's top scorers in Dylan Langkabel, who is headed to Northwood University in Michigan to play next year. Expect a good matchup.
Shelbyville at Mt. Vernon, 7:30: The Marauders are 2-2, but are ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by the Sagarin ratings. MV has played four tough opponents so far, so the winless Golden Bears (0-4) could be a good opportunity for the Marauders to get a lift going into the county tournament. And it happens without legendary FC coach Mark James on the sidelines, as he took his boots to Ben Davis. The Flashes are 3-2 under new coach John Rockey, and are coming off big wins over Columbus North and Fishers. This could be a preview of the Center Grove sectional. Friday night hoops
In our broadcast tonight, the New Palestine boys basketball team jumped out to an early double-digit
lead and posted its best defensive game in 13 years in a 63-19 victory
over Greenfield-Central.
The Dragons' victory was their largest win margin since a 49-point win over Eastern Hancock 1999 and their best defensive effort since also holding Sheridan to 19 points in 1998.
Freshman Brandon Jonas had a big night, scoring a career-high 17 points, hitting 7-of-8 from the field. Junior Michael Morris kick-started the Dragons in the second quarter, scoring 12 points in the frame en route to a 16-point night on 6-of-7 shooting. Junior Justin Ikerd added three 3-pointers and 13 points. He hit two early threes that gave the Dragons an 11-3 edge. NPHS would lead 19-3 after a quarter and 37-9 at the half.
The Dragons shot 54 percent from the floor, hitting 24-of-44. G-C's bright spot was its free throw shooting, as the Cougars hit 8-of-10 from the line in the game.

Northeastern 68, Eastern Hancock 65: The Royals jumped out to an early 21-point lead, but Northeastern chipped it down to three by the end of the third and took the game in the fourth.

Shelby Oldham hit a big 3-pointer that gave G-C its first six-point lead and set the tone for the latter stages of the game.
But the big key was Sara Jones. The junior post player had career highs with 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. LaRae Cruz added 17 points and eight rebounds, and Katie Peters had 12 points and eight boards for G-C.
Bethany Murrell had 18 points to lead the Dragons in scoring, to go along with six rebounds. Lauren Tieman had nine points and nine rebounds. Abby Seifert had seven points, eight rebounds and two assists.
Both teams are back in action Saturday. The Cougars will host Chatard for a 6 p.m. JV tip. The Dragons next play Saturday at home against Shelbyville. The varsity-only game will tip off at 7:30 p.m.

The Dragons' victory was their largest win margin since a 49-point win over Eastern Hancock 1999 and their best defensive effort since also holding Sheridan to 19 points in 1998.
Freshman Brandon Jonas had a big night, scoring a career-high 17 points, hitting 7-of-8 from the field. Junior Michael Morris kick-started the Dragons in the second quarter, scoring 12 points in the frame en route to a 16-point night on 6-of-7 shooting. Junior Justin Ikerd added three 3-pointers and 13 points. He hit two early threes that gave the Dragons an 11-3 edge. NPHS would lead 19-3 after a quarter and 37-9 at the half.
The Dragons shot 54 percent from the floor, hitting 24-of-44. G-C's bright spot was its free throw shooting, as the Cougars hit 8-of-10 from the line in the game.

Friday wrap: Marauders, Cougars fall at home
Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central both fell at home to strong programs Friday night, seeing some outstanding individual performances.
In the game we broadcast, 4A No. 2 Hamilton Southeastern pulled away to beat Mt. Vernon 67-39 in a game that was pretty close for a half. HSE's Zak Irvin led a blistering start in which the Royals scored 23 first-quarter points and built a double-digit lead, but MV's C.J. Coleman scored eight in the second quarter and closed the Royals' lead to 28-22 before HSE scored the quarter's final six points.
But that's where Gary Harris, one of the top players in the nation, stepped in. He scored nine of his 17 points in the third quarter -- including a personal seven-point run that included a dunk, a jumper, a steal and a 3-pointer that quickly built the Royals' lead to 44-26. HSE would use a relentless defense to extend it from there.
The Royals are strong and deep, putting together an attack with four double-figure scorers for the second straight game. Harris, who will be playing for Michigan State next year, scored 17. Irvin -- a 6-7 junior guard headed to Michigan -- had a game-high 18. Guard Jacobby Bledsoe scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers. HSE's Paul Furlin also hit double-figures.
Coleman led MV with 15 points. Stephen Turner scored 13 for the Marauders, including eight in the first quarter.
MV next plays next Friday against Pendleton Heights on the road. MV is now 2-1 on the year.
Meanwhile, Greenfield-Central fell to New Castle 62-35. The Cougars did put forth their highest point total of the year in the loss, which dropped them to 0-4.
Mason Irbe led G-C with 9 points, with Grant Wolfe scoring 8. Austin Goolsby scored 16 points and Kendall Ryan 14 for the Trojans.

Saturday morning QB: Look back at Friday night
An interesting night in the HHC. Pendleton Heights makes a big statement. New Palestine flexes its muscles and claims sole possession of first place. And Yorktown picks Delta off four times in an upset.
Here's a look back in our weekly Saturday Morning QB roundup:
Pendleton Heights 38, Mt. Vernon 6: The Arabians doubled up No. 10 MV in yardage, but turned the game late in the first half with 14 points in the last 2:06. An interception deep in Arabian territory by Chandler Wilson turned into a touchdown, then QB Mitch Patishall threw deep to Jacob Lyons on the final play of the half. Lyons had a rushing and receiving TD, Jon Furrow had two rushing TDs, both had 100 yards on the ground and Patishall threw for 134 yards and two scores. PH has now scored at least 38 points in all four of its wins, and is in a second-place tie with Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central at 2-1 in the HHC. Both teams are 4-1. MV plays at Shelbyville next week in our Hancock County Game of the Week broadcast.

Matt Siergiej and Austin Monday rushed for a combined 200 yards, with Monday scoring twice and Siergiej totaling 105 yards and scoring once. Simmons was 8-of-11 for 297 yards and threw two TDs each to Josh Penley (66 & 1 yards) and Brandon Collins (28 & 16 yards) and an 85-yard TD pass to Tyler Walden. NP is now 5-0/3-0. Rushville is 2-3/0-3.

G-C had three touchdowns on returns, as Dickerson's blocked punt led to a TD by Jeremiah Wray late in the game. The Cougars forced five turnovers.

But the Panthers forced a fumble and held on to beat EH and retain possession of the Plow Share and Anvil Trophy. Knightstown's Wing-T offense gained 361 rushing yards. Gilbert threw two TD passes for EH, which has dropped two close games in a row and is now 1-4. Knightstown -- in its first year under the tutelage of Mt. Vernon graduate Patrick Mallory -- is 3-2.

PH knocks MV from perch; NP/G-C win
Not many close games in the county tonight, as Pendleton Heights used a dominating performance from its offensive and defensive lines to beat Mt. Vernon 38-6 tonight.
The Arabians ran the ball for more than 258 yards and outgained MV 392-149. PH's Jacob Lyons and Jon Furrow both broke the 100-yard mark on the evening.
Everything started on the first drive, as MV was held to a three-and-out, punted to give the Arabians a short field and they continued to work the left side with Lyons and Furrow before Lyons carried it in from two yards out. A blocked punt set PH up at the Marauder 14, but MV held the Arabians to a field goal.
Trailing 10-0 late in the first half, things began to unravel for MV. The Marauders were in the midst of a strong five-minute drive that carried to the PH 20 after Tyler Dicks' 25-yard scamper around the right side -- one in which Furrow made a shoestring touchdown-saving tackle. Three plays later, PH's Chandler Wilson intercepted the Marauders. A 37-yard pass from Mitch Patishall to Kurt Talbert, followed by a 25-yard run by Lyons, gave the Arabians room for Furrow's second TD with 2:06 left. Suddenly, it was 17-0.
MV was forced to punt the ball to PH again, but with 26 seconds and one timeout, the Arabians were able to work the ball to midfield where Patishall found Lyons deep for a 46-yard touchdown on the first half's final play that sent them into the locker room up 24-0.
PH extended the lead from there, using its kicking game to pin MV inside its own 20 repeatedly, and then using the field position advantage to score -- Furrow ran in a 31-yard TD and Patishall hit Austin Coffel from 11 yards out. MV's defense forced a turnover late, and QB Jordan Miller threw a 17-yard TD pass to Anthony Burnett on the next play to get the Marauders on the board.
Dicks led MV offensively with 97 yards rushing on 26 carries.
Both teams are 4-1 and 2-1 in HHC play. But the game continues to make the HHC race interesting.
New Palestine 53, Rushville 0: This was never close -- NP had a 20-0 lead at the end of one, doubled the lead by halftime and kept adding on. No. 4 Dragons now 5-0 on the year and alone atop the HHC with a 3-0 record.
Greenfield-Central 36, Shelbyville 13: The Cougars got some big special-teams play, with a blocked punt turning into a touchdown in a homecoming victory. G-C now 3-2/2-1.
Knightstown 20, Eastern Hancock 14: The Panthers led throughout, although the game was always close. The Royals continue to show fourth-quarter strength, but Mt. Vernon graduate Pat Mallory's team improves to 3-2 while the Royals are now 1-4 with back-to-back close losses.
And in the HHC
Yorktown 28, Delta 14: No, not a misprint. Yorktown led throughout this one, spoiling Delta's return home. It's the Eagles' first HHC loss to a team besides New Palestine since 2008, and one of the biggest wins of young Tiger head coach Mike Wilhelm's career.

A blocked punt set PH up at the Marauder 14, but MV held the Arabians to a field goal.
Trailing 10-0 late in the first half, things began to unravel for MV. The Marauders were in the midst of a strong five-minute drive that carried to the PH 20 after Tyler Dicks' 25-yard scamper around the right side -- one in which Furrow made a shoestring touchdown-saving tackle. Three plays later, PH's Chandler Wilson intercepted the Marauders. A 37-yard pass from Mitch Patishall to Kurt Talbert, followed by a 25-yard run by Lyons, gave the Arabians room for Furrow's second TD with 2:06 left. Suddenly, it was 17-0.
MV was forced to punt the ball to PH again, but with 26 seconds and one timeout, the Arabians were able to work the ball to midfield where Patishall found Lyons deep for a 46-yard touchdown on the first half's final play that sent them into the locker room up 24-0.
PH extended the lead from there, using its kicking game to pin MV inside its own 20 repeatedly, and then using the field position advantage to score -- Furrow ran in a 31-yard TD and Patishall hit Austin Coffel from 11 yards out. MV's defense forced a turnover late, and QB Jordan Miller threw a 17-yard TD pass to Anthony Burnett on the next play to get the Marauders on the board.
Dicks led MV offensively with 97 yards rushing on 26 carries.
Both teams are 4-1 and 2-1 in HHC play. But the game continues to make the HHC race interesting.
New Palestine 53, Rushville 0: This was never close -- NP had a 20-0 lead at the end of one, doubled the lead by halftime and kept adding on. No. 4 Dragons now 5-0 on the year and alone atop the HHC with a 3-0 record.
Greenfield-Central 36, Shelbyville 13: The Cougars got some big special-teams play, with a blocked punt turning into a touchdown in a homecoming victory. G-C now 3-2/2-1.
Knightstown 20, Eastern Hancock 14: The Panthers led throughout, although the game was always close. The Royals continue to show fourth-quarter strength, but Mt. Vernon graduate Pat Mallory's team improves to 3-2 while the Royals are now 1-4 with back-to-back close losses.

Yorktown 28, Delta 14: No, not a misprint. Yorktown led throughout this one, spoiling Delta's return home. It's the Eagles' first HHC loss to a team besides New Palestine since 2008, and one of the biggest wins of young Tiger head coach Mike Wilhelm's career.

Royals rally to cap off DH
Things weren't looking too good for Eastern Hancock midway through the third quarter Friday, as the Royal boys trailed Knightstown by 15 points and were struggling to develop much offense.
Then, Dustin Smith got loose.
He squared up and hit a 3. Then another. Then another. Suddenly, the Royals were making a comeback at Knightstown. They cut the deficit to 42-36 by the end of the third, and then Smith went to work with another 3 and a driving shot ... then the dagger, a pull-up NBA-range triple with a hand in his face that gave EH the lead at 44-42. They never trailed from there and won 63-52.
Smith led a 16-2 run, and scored 40 points on the night, hitting 7-of-9 from 3-point range and 11-of-12 from the line. He also had 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. But equally big was the play of Jared Pyle, who had six big second-half points. Or Zach Kissick, whose pickpocket and layup in the backcourt gave the Royals a late cushion and took the wind out of Knightstown's sails late.
The Panthers had three players in double figures, but this night belonged to Dustin Smith. EH is now 5-1 heading into Saturday's game against Cambridge City Lincoln.
Knightstown did win the girls game by double-figures, with Kaelee Kuhn scoring 17 points after the Panthers lost Megan Hiner early to injury.
It was also a good night for the rest of the Hancock County boys teams. Greenfield-Central won its second straight, knocking off Yorktown 53-42. Mt. Vernon won its first of the year, winning at Shelbyville 43-39. And New Palestine beat Morristown, a team led by one of the nation's top players in Dylan Langkabel, 84-69.
Also, of interest in the HHC, Rushville beat Delta 66-44, Pendleton Heights beat Shenandoah 61-28. PH's girls also beat Shenandoah 61-17.
