The Marauders come in having won six of seven and are playing very well. Led by guard C.J. Coleman -- who has topped the 20-point mark on multiple occasions this season -- MV is looking to seal up second place in the HHC. The Dragons are looking to bounce back from Tuesday's 68-64 home loss to a solid Westfield team. Reid Clark posted his second straight double-double and Brandon Collins scored 15 points for the Dragons. Michael Morris had hit double-figures in nine straight games.

Shelton named IBCA Coach of the Year
Mt. Vernon's Julie Shelton has been named a District II Coach of the Year by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Shelton helped lead the Marauders to a 21-2 record and a spot in the regional final this year. The Marauders held a No. 1 ranking in Class 3A for much of the season.
Shelton is 197-92 in 13 years as the Marauders' head coach.
Mike Hamacher of Hobart, Doug Springer of Northridge, David Baxter of Benton Central, Beth DeVinney of Seymour and Corey Simon of Evansville North were the other five award winners.

First night of sectional
No Hancock County teams in action, but some games in Hancock County sectionals.
First off, a barnburner at New Palestine between arch-rivals Shelbyville and Rushville, and the second-ranked team in Class 3A goes down 55-52. Shelby trailed by five in the game's final minute, but a short jumper by Patrick Ellis, followed by a stolen inbounds pass and a 3-pointer by Ben Kramer tied the game. Then, with Rushville playing for the final shot, Ellis stole the ball and fed John Krise for a layup that became a 3-point play with 4.6 seconds left. Rushville missed a desperation heave and Shelby won. Rushville led 21-11 at one point early, but then Shelby went on a big run that pushed its lead to 38-31 midway through the third. The lead see-sawed back and forth, as Rushville's Jon Thompson had a huge fourth quarter. Shelby was led by Patrick Ellis' 15 points, leading three players in double-figures.
So, here are the pairings for Friday night at NPHS. We will be broadcasting both games:
6 p.m.: New Palestine (9-11) vs. #4 Hamilton Heights (17-4)

At New Castle, Greenfield-Central (9-11) will face Pendleton Heights (16-5) at 7:30 p.m., following the tilt between Anderson (4-16) and Connersville (8-14). In the other bracket, New Castle (15-5), which drew a bye, will face Richmond (17-5). The Red Devils beat Muncie Central 59-50 tonight.
Eastern Hancock (17-3) will face Cambridge City Lincoln (2-18) at 7:30 p.m., following the tilt between Knightstown (9-11) and Centerville (14-6). The winners of those games will play in the 7:30 p.m. semifinal Friday night. Friday's first semi will be between Union County (16-5) and Shenandoah (15-8). UC beat host Hagerstown 50-49 tonight, while Shenandoah beat Northeastern 65-53.

Marauders win 3rd straight
Mt. Vernon is on a roll going into the sectional, winning three straight games after tonight's 47-36 victory over Yorktown.
MV had two runs in the game -- an 8-0 spurt led by Quinn Williams in the second quarter that put the Marauders up 14-7, and a 16-3 run in the third spanning into the fourth that was keyed by Corbin Bundy's two 3-pointers and a couple of baskets each from Alex Payne and Anthony Burnett, which put MV up 36-23. Junior guard Seth Cook tried to get Yorktown back in it -- and did the first time, hitting 5 3s and scoring 17 points, but the Marauders had too much firepower in the end.
On Senior Night, Williams scored 16 points -- hitting five shots and 6-of-10 from the line -- while Bundy scored 12, half of which came from beyond the arc. Senior Darrion Colbert also started and played significant minutes. Payne had eight points for the Marauders.
MV is now 7-13, but has won three straight and ties Shelbyville for fifth in the tough Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 3-4 mark. Yorktown finishes 6-14 and plays Muncie South Tuesday night in the Muncie sectional.
MV does not yet know its first-round foe -- the Marauders will play next Friday against either No. 6 Rushville or Shelbyville in the second semifinal at New Palestine. Tuesday hoops
Nearly half of Mt. Vernon's games have been decided by one possession this year. Tuesday, the Marauders took it to another level. MV beat Westfield 74-73 in double OT Tuesday night for the Marauders' second straight win. Quinn Williams scored 41 points and hit a shot late in the second OT to win it. Anthony Burnett scored 12. MV is now 6-13 heading into Friday's season finale against Yorktown, which we will broadcast on www.hancockcountysports.com.
New Palestine dropped an 85-78 OT decision to Shelbyville on Tuesday night. The Dragons trailed by as many as 18 points -- but scored 51 second-half points to knot the game and send it into OT on Reid Clark's putback with 2.8 seconds left in regulation. Josh Penley had 27 points and six assists, Clark nine rebounds and Justin Ikerd 17 points for the Dragons. Shelby's Patrick Ellis scored 25, and helped take the game over in OT, in which the Bears outscored NP 17-10. Dragons now 8-10 and finish HHC play with a 1-6 mark.
Eastern Hancock keeps rolling, improving to 16-3 with a 73-61 Senior Night victory over Morristown. EH jumped out to an early double-digit lead and never looked back in the victory. Zach Kissick led EH with 21 points, Dustin Smith added 18.

Greenfield-Central has a rematch with HHC co-champ Pendleton Heights in the opening round of the sectional on March 2. PH won the regular-season meeting. Mt. Vernon and New Palestine both drew byes in their sectional. Host NP will play Hamilton Heights at 6 p.m. Friday, March 4, with MV to play either Rushville or Shelbyville in the following game. Eastern Hancock drew Cambridge City Lincoln -- a team it beat handily in December -- in the opening game Wednesday, March 2. Should the Royals win, they will face either Knightstown or Centerville -- two of the favorites -- in the Friday semifinal.

Marauders fall in regional final
Mt. Vernon's dream season came to an end on the Marauders' home floor Saturday night at the hands of an underrated, but very strong Roncalli squad 52-36.
Roncalli was led by freshman Elizabeth Bowers, who scored 19 points and helped key a 23-7 stretch in the middle quarters that turned a 10-all tie into a 33-17 lead for the Rebels midway through the third. Roncalli started the second half with a 14-2 spurt, and then fended off every Marauder advance from there.
Freshman guard Kelli Kirkhoff scored 13 points and was the team's floor general. Bridget Perry, the Rebels' leading scorer and a sophomore, had 11. Coco Clark -- the veteran of the starting five as a junior -- scored nine, while Katie Brewer controlled the glass. Roncalli starts three six-footers, and it showed, as the Rebels blocked several Marauder shots.
MV was led by 10 points from Kayla Negley and nine from Jessica Brown. Rachel Houck added eight points, including two 3s in the third quarter to help dent into the Rebels' lead. But the Marauders just didn't have enough to come all the way back.
The Marauders' season ends with a 21-2 mark, the HHC, Hancock County and Hamilton Heights sectional championships. They deserved every accolade they got -- but just ran into a strong team on Saturday night.
After knocking off #2, Roncalli will face #1 Evansville Memorial in next week's semistate.

- Marauders beat two ranked teams in the sectional to win its first since 2005.
- Hoosier Heritage Conference champs with 7-0 league record. One of three HHC teams to win their sectionals this year -- joining Pendleton Heights & Yorktown. This is the second straight year HHC teams won all three sectionals in which conference teams compete.
- MV had several streaks going. Streak of 35 straight regular-season wins was snapped by North Central in the regular season finale. MV has won 16 consecutive home games, and won the only regional it has played on its home floor in 2005. MV is 38-4 the last two seasons, and was ranked No. 1 for much of the year.
- MV rallied from double-digit second-half deficit to beat Hamilton Heights in the sectional title game, led by 8-of-10 FT shooting from Jessica Brown, who scored 17 points. Six-foot freshman post Erica Moore had 19 and 11 boards and sophomore Rachel Houck (15 points, 5 3s) and senior Kayla Negley (14 points, 7 assists) also had big nights.
- Against Rushville, Brown hit 11 free throws to help seal that game. Negley and Indiana State recruit Makenzi Reasor both scored 12.
- In sectional, Brown scored 17.5 ppg and hit 19-of-28 from the line. Negley averaged 13 points, 5.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds in the sectional.
- Only one player averaging in double-figures (Brown, 14.4 ppg), but Reasor, Negley, Houck and Moore all average between 7.6 and 9.1 ppg.

- 10-game turnaround from last year, when the Tigers went 10-12.
- 12-game winning streak is one of state's longest. Perfect in 2011 -- last loss was to Cathedral on Dec. 27.
- Led by guard Alison Curtis, a Harvard recruit who has scored in double-figures in 19 of the Tigers' 23 games. Averaged 16.7 ppg in sectional, 16.4 ppg for the season. Had 22 against Danville, 19 against Southmont in sectional.
- In the sectional final against North Montgomery, Lexi Reese scored 13 points and Katie Curtis -- Alison's younger sister -- scored 11. Reese is the team's third-leading scorer at 9.3 ppg.
- Katie Curtis is the assist person. Had career high 15 helpers (and 15 points) against Southmont in the sectional opener. She is the second-leading scorer at 12.4 ppg and averages a shade under six assists per game.

- Outscored Scottsburg 25-7 over the final seven and a half minutes to erase 16-point deficit and win the sectional title game. Senior Kayla Luellen scored 17 points, including three FTs in final minute to win the game. Junior guard Mandy Stoll scored 19 points and junior forward Nayla Lunsford 16 in that game.

- The Rebels are rolling, having won eight straight games by an average score of 57-36. In the sectional, they allowed only 27.3 ppg.
- Roncalli has lots of balance -- in the sectional, six different players scored in double-figures. The Rebels also have a lot of size, with five players 5-10 or taller.
- Junior guard Coco Clark had 16 points & 8 boards in the sectional title win over Chatard. Elizabeth Bowers had two double-figures games in the sectional, scoring 10 against Chatard and 14 against Howe. Katie Brewer had 15 points/8 boards to lead the Rebels in the opening game against Beech Grove.
- Leading scorer is 6-2 guard Bridget Perry, who scored in double figures every game but one during the regular season, with a high of 29.
- Bowers, a 6-foot freshman, was the leading scorer in the sectional, scoring 9.3 ppg and hitting 13 of her 16 FG attempts.

Potential sectional opponents, the Marauders and Dragons have met twice a year for the last seven seasons, but this is their first meeting. NP had a three-game winning streak snapped Tuesday in a 67-56 loss to Westfield, in which Taylor Rainey scored 21 points. MV has had a knack for playing close games -- prior to dropping back-to-back games to Marion County powers Lawrence Central and Warren Central within the last week, the Marauders had played five straight one-possession games. NP has had a knack for doing the same -- the Dragons have played four OT games this season. Expect a good game with a big crowd and two outstanding coaches. We're excited to be bringing it to you!
Greenfield-Central (6-10) at Cambridge City Lincoln (2-15): The Cougars stayed in the HHC hunt until falling to Rushville on Tuesday night, but they've already clinched their best season since 2006-07. They'll be heavily-favored to do the same on Friday night.

Should the Eagles beat Shelbyville on Friday, this will be a matchup to decide who finishes third and fourth in the conference. Delta has won five of its last six.
Tri (2-14) at Eastern Hancock (14-3): The Royals are rolling, having been perfect in 2011 since dropping back-to-back games in the Hancock County Tournament, and a big reason why is their multi-pronged scoring attack, led by senior Dustin Smith. He scored 23 points in a 36-point victory over Alexandria on Tuesday. This game was initially scheduled for Feb. 4, but was postponed twice due to ice and snow storms.

MV boys fall to Warren tonight
Mt. Vernon's boys basketball team dropped a 56-40 decision on the road at Warren Central tonight in a make-up game from "ice week."

More HHC teams playing in sectional finals
Yorktown will play Blackford for the Mississinewa sectional title, as the Tigers beat Delta 69-59. It was the teams' third meeting this season, and Yorktown won all three.
Pendleton Heights beat New Castle 52-47 at Muncie Central. The Arabians trailed 36-31 late in the third, but went on a huge 18-5 run to take the lead. Should PH hold on, the Arabians will play Anderson for the sectional title.
Hamilton Heights has a sizeable lead on Shelbyville late and will play MV tomorrow night for the sectional title.

Eastern Hancock (12-3) at Triton Central (6-8): Intriguging matchup, especially since the Tigers have been playing very well of late and EH is, too, but the Royals have played one game in three weeks. TC has won five of its last six. Both have been off since Jan. 29.
New Palestine (7-7) at Hauser (7-8): The Dragons have been playing pretty well, having won their last two games. Hauser is coming off a 74-71 win over Morristown last week.
Whiteland (6-10) at Mt. Vernon (4-10): The Marauders are the one team playing at home this week. Whiteland has dropped three of four, including a 61-47 decision to New Palestine on Jan. 29. MV has played four straight games decided in the final possession, winning two of them. Big game to start the stretch drive.
In addition, there is one game Saturday afternoon (Lawrence Central at MV, 2:30 p.m.).

Enrollment numbers out
The IHSAA has released its enrollment numbers, and there will be some interesting changes ahead.
First of all, it appears New Palestine will move up to Class 4A in basketball/volleyball/baseball/softball, while Greenfield-Central will remain 4A. Mt. Vernon, which has a reported enrollment of 15 fewer students than NP, will remain in Class 3A and be the largest school.
These are all unofficial right now. The IHSAA released enrollments for 409 schools, which would indicate 102 schools in Classes 4A, 3A and 2A and 103 in Class A. NP ranks 100th on the state's enrollment list with 1092 students. MV ranks 103rd with 1077. G-C is the largest county school with 1410 students, and is 72nd in enrollment.
Eastern Hancock will remain one of the smallest schools in Class 2A. With 355 students, EH ranks 291st, and would be 15 spots (and 39 students) ahead of the 1A/2A cutoff.
In football, the three larger county schools will remain in Class 4A, with G-C inching closer to the top, but all three would comfortably be in 4A for the next cycle. EH appears to be staying in Class A.
Among HHC schools, Shelbyville will jump back into Class 4A in bb/vb/baseball/softball after one cycle in Class 3A. Delta, Yorktown and Rushville will remain 3A, while Pendleton Heights will remain 4A ... essentially meaning Shelby & NP will move up, putting half the league in 4A and half in 3A.

Girls pairings
It's a matchup with two top 10 teams at Hamilton Heights when No. 1 Mt. Vernon meets No. 6 Rushville in the first semifinal game of their sectional. In Class 3A, No. 1 Mt. Vernon (18-1) will face No. 6 Rushville (13-6) -- the three-time defending sectional champ and last year's state runner-up -- in the first game on Friday night. MV won 56-33 in November. New Palestine (10-9) meets Shelbyville (4-14) on Tuesday night, with the winner facing host No. 4 Hamilton Heights on Friday.

Royals victorious ... MV girls fall from unbeaten ranks
The annual (and often twice annual) matchups between Eastern Hancock and Greenfield-Central are often great, closely-contested games -- and the fact that they had split their last eight meetings shows that.
It was certainly the case tonight. EH pulled away to a 44-38 victory, but it was a close game throughout. The Royals scored eight points on the game's first three possessions, but G-C slowly worked its way back into the game and took two third-quarter leads. But EH's 3-point shooting -- the Royals hit seven 3s -- proved to be the difference.
Dustin Smith had 20 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field (4-of-5 from deep) and 6-of-6 from the line. Not only did he hit triples on the Royals' first two possessions of the game, he also hit a big 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to help the Royals open up a lead, and then hit four late FTs to salt the game away. Zach Kissick and Jared Pyle had nine points each for the Royals.
G-C was led by Jared Morris' 19 points, as the junior guard had a very strong night shooting the ball and running the Cougars' patient offense.
The teams were lights-out shooting in the first half -- EH was 70%, G-C 67% -- but both cooled a bit after the break as the defenses ratcheted up.
An interesting sidelight: EH got its first victory over a county school this year in four tries -- but of the three previous ones, two were decided at the buzzer. G-C is 5-9 but still leads the Hoosier Heritage Conference. The Cougars have not won a game against a non-HHC foe this year, but are 5-2 against HHC teams (4-1 in conference games, 1-1 in the Hancock County Tourney).
Elsewhere:
Mt. Vernon's girls fell from the ranks of the unbeaten and saw their 35-game regular-season perfect streak end with a 38-35 loss at North Central. The Marauders are 18-1 and face Shenandoah on Thursday in the regular-season finale.
The Marauder boys played their fourth straight down-to-the-wire game tonight, but fell to Delta 54-52 on the road. MV is now 4-10 (1-4). MV's next game is Saturday at Warren Central.
New Palestine's girls dropped a 63-35 decision to Pendleton Heights. Lauren Tieman scored 12 for the Dragons (10-9/4-3).

Marauders, Dragons victorious
Mt. Vernon and Connersville were two teams led by outstanding senior guards who were just looking for a bit of consistency heading into the season's homestretch.
The Marauders got it in a 46-44 victory.
The two senior guards didn't disappoint -- MV's Quinn Williams scored 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting and led two key Marauder runs that helped open up leads of 19-10 and 28-20. Connersville's Zach Miller scored 19 points and hit back-to-back 3-pointers that cut an eight-point Marauder lead to 38-36 late.
And then it was time for the young players to shine. Freshman C.J. Coleman and sophomore Anthony Burnett hit 8-of-10 from the line in the final 1:25 to fend off Connersville's comeback -- although two more desperation 3s gave the Spartans a chance to win it with a triple at the buzzer that hit the rim and bounded off.
The Marauders did it with free throws -- they were 10-of-14 in the final quarter -- possession (six turnovers) and defense/rebounding. They held Connersville to 40% shooting (15-40), while shooting just under 50% themselves (15-31). Stephen Turner had a big game on the glass, and Coleman (nine points) and Burnett (10 points) were key complementary scorers, especially given they combined for nine in the fourth quarter.
MV has played three straight one-possession games. The Marauders (4-9/1-3) dive back into HHC play Saturday at Delta. Tip is 7:45 p.m.
Elsewhere ... all of the eyes in the HHC were on tonight's contest between Greenfield-Central and Pendleton Heights. The Cougars came in with the HHC lead and a win would put them in great shape heading into the final couple of conference games. Meanwhile, the Arabians needed a win to stay in the conference race.
PH got the win, but it was in a tight game. The Arabians won 59-50, forging a virtual three-way tie in the HHC race. PH is now 5-1 in conference play, while G-C (5-8) and Rushville are both 4-1. The Cougars and Rushville play each other late in the season. G-C also has a huge game against Delta next week.
But first, the Cougars have to face an 11-3 Eastern Hancock team that was idle tonight. The Royals will host G-C at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Chris and Andrew will bring the game to you at 7:10. Of course, you always can LISTEN LIVE HERE!

Friday night wrapup
We saw a solid performance from Mt. Vernon's girls tonight as they clinch at least a share of the HHC championship with a 48-37 victory over Greenfield-Central.
While the matchup featured two of the area's top junior guards, the inside players stole the show. Jessica Brown and LaRae Cruz did their damage on defense, holding the other team's leading scorer to five points each.
6-foot-2 junior Makenzi Reasor scored 18 points, including all eight of MV's points in the first quarter. Kayla Negley added 12 points and a boatload of steals. For G-C, Katie Peters scored 12 points and Kyra Tweedy hit three triples for nine points.
MV used a big first-half defensive run and forced 15 first-half turnovers to lead 20-10 at the break, and used a 10-point third quarter run to push the edge to 33-17. The lead would remain in double-digits from there.
MV is now 17-0 and 6-0 in the HHC. G-C is now 8-9 and 2-4 in HHC play.
In boys action tonight, it was a good night for one of the active county schools, a not-so-good one for the other. Eastern Hancock had a huge night in a 93-58 victory over Lapel. Meanwhile, New Palestine suffered another close loss -- this time a 65-63 road defeat at Triton Central.

Tonight's games
Thanks for bearing with us through some pretty severe technical problems we were experiencing before the game. We had some issues getting our phone connection set up, but thankfully, we were able to get on the air right at tipoff.
Pendleton Heights is good. Very good -- the Arabians showed it tonight. They have a great 1-2 punch in 6-4 wing Kellen Dunham and 5-11 point guard Kendall Waters, who combined for 51 points in the Arabians' 76-49 victory over New Palestine tonight. Waters had 33 points on 9-of-14 FG shooting and 10-of-11 from the line, to go along with five boards, six assists and four steals. He was in total control of the game from start to finish. Dunham added 18 points, including an off-balance 3 right before halftime that gave the Arabians a 35-22 edge going into the break and really propelled them to the victory.
At 11-1, PH is going to be a serious factor in the old North Central Conference sectional and it's hard to see how they're not getting poll votes. New Palestine's Justin Ikerd is growing up before our eyes, too. He had 17 points tonight, and had several on drives to the hoop and pull-up shots, in addition to his deadeye 3-point shooting. Josh Penley added 13 points.
Two other boys games in Hancock County tonight: Eastern Hancock beat Shenandoah 60-58 in overtime in the renewal of their rivalry. Big road victory for the Royals, who have another tough game at Union County tomorrow.
Mt. Vernon fell to a ranked Rushville team 67-52 on the road. MV returns home tomorrow to face No. 6 Howe.

Friday night roundup
Greenfield-Central posts its fourth win in six games with a 52-44 road win at Mt. Vernon.
Cougars take the lead when 6'6 post Tyler Stone scores six points late in the first and midway through the second, and then Josh Mayes took over. The Cougar senior hit four 3s and two big baskets to start the third. He finished the night with 18 points, including 10 in the third quarter when the Cougars took a 6-point halftime lead and pushed it as high as 16. MV cut it to four late, led by Anthony Burnett and C.J. Coleman, but the Cougars -- led by Jordan Conley's 9-of-10 performance from the stripe -- iced the game at the line. G-C played most of the night without starter Derek Conley, who suffered an ankle injury early in the game and did not return.
G-C now 4-6 (3-0 Hoosier Heritage Conference), MV now 2-6 (1-2).
In other games tonight, Eastern Hancock improved to 8-3 with a nice 51-32 victory over Muncie Burris. New Palestine's win streak was snapped on the road at Delta tonight, as the Dragons fell in OT by a 73-69 score. It was the Dragons' third consecutive overtime game.
Next week, we have two games on HancockCountySports.com -- on Friday, we'll be at Pendleton Heights for the New Palestine-PH game. Saturday night, we have girls basketball, as G-C visits NP. Airtime for both games is 7:10 p.m.
