Big night of hoops Friday in Hancock County as the gyms heated up before the fans had to head home in ice and snow.
Tonight saw Mt. Vernon's girls win their second straight HHC championship -- at least a piece was clinched tonight with the Marauders' 19th straight conference victory. We also saw a shattered backboard at New Palestine, causing the Dragons' 70-45 victory over Triton Central to be moved across the hall for the second half. And Eastern Hancock scored 70 points, but lost to Lapel by 11.
Let's start with our game:
Mt. Vernon 55, Greenfield-Central 44 (girls): MV used a 9-0 first-quarter run that extended to a 17-3 run in the first half to build leads of 13-6 and 21-9. MV never allowed the lead to slip below six in the victory.
Different players stepped up at different times for MV, which had three players in double figures. Makenzi Reasor had a big first quarter, scoring eight of her 14 points in the opening quarter and then hitting a big 3-pointer in the second.
Erica Moore then scored eight of her 14 points at big moments in the third and early in the fourth quarter as G-C cut the Marauders' lead to six on several occasions. MV kept pushing the lead back to 10 every time the Cougars cut it to six. Jessica Brown then scored 13 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter -- including 9-of-10 from the line -- to put the game away.
Rachel Houck added eight points for MV.
LaRae Cruz finished with 15 points for G-C, including 13 in the second half. Sara Jones added nine points.
MV is now 16-3 and 6-0 in HHC play. The Marauders can clinch the outright title in their final conference game Jan. 28 against Delta. G-C is 11-6 and 4-2 in conference play, moving into third place.
New Palestine 70, Triton Central 45: The Dragons jumped out to a 31-16 halftime lead en route to their 10th win in 12 outings, but that quickly became a sidelight after Boomer, the Pacers' mascot, shattered the backboard on his first dunk attempt of his halftime show.
The game was continued in the auxiliary gym, where the Dragons cruised to the victory.
Justin Ikerd had a season-high 19 points, including five 3-pointers,
to lead the Dragons offensively. He also had three rebounds and three
steals. Josh Penley also had three rebounds, three steals, a big dunk
and 13 points. Michael Morris rounded out three Dragons in double
figures with 10 points and five rebounds.
Reid Clark and Brandon Collins had seven boards apiece. Clark
also had four assists, a team-high. Collins added seven points. Brandon
Jonas scored six.
The Dragons shot 47 percent from the floor and held TC to 32 percent.
The Dragons outscored TC 24-9 in the second to build a 15-point
halftime edge, then pushed it to 59-28 at the end of three with a
28-point third quarter.

Lapel 81, Eastern Hancock 70: The Royals jumped out to an early 15-8 lead, but Lapel had a hot-shooting second quarter and kept a slim lead the rest of the night. Victor Vincz led the Royals with 23 points. Jared Pyle had 16 points and 11 boards. Isaiah McCormick and Cody Wallace were also in double-figures for EH (7-7). Schedule changes
Upcoming NCAA legislation that has killed the impending Hoosier Heritage Conference girls basketball classic at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Jan. 21 has also caused changes to our broadcast schedule.
We had planned to broadcast two games from the Hinkle Classic, and several games that weekend. We will continue to broadcast the Knightstown-MV boys game on Thursday, Jan. 19.
However, we have schedule changes for the rest of the weekend.
On Friday, Jan. 20, we will broadcast the Mt. Vernon at Greenfield-Central girls game, which was originally to be played at Hinkle. Because of that, we will not be able to broadcast the Eastern Hancock at Lapel game that was originally on our schedule that evening. We are no longer planning to broadcast any games on Saturday, Jan. 21 as of this time.

On Friday, Feb. 3, we will broadcast two games simultaneously. We've added the Senior Night for Mt. Vernon's decorated girls basketball senior class as the 3A No. 2 Marauders face 4A No. 5 North Central. On Tuesday, Feb. 21, join us as Eastern Hancock's boys team visits Morristown.

Tuesday wrap: EH, G-C girls continue hot streaks
Greenfield-Central's girls basketball team has the longest hot streak going of any school in the county. It continued Tuesday, as the Cougars won their sixth straight game, beating Richmond 53-37.
The Cougars started red-hot, shutting out the Red Devils in a 16-0 first quarter. They continued from there, building the lead to 35-16 at halftime and 49-28 at the end of three.
Senior guard LaRae Cruz -- fresh off a 30-point game in Saturday's overtime victory over Chatard -- followed it up with a 21-point effort. Junior Katie Peters scored 10 points in a double-figure game. Ashley Chase added nine points for G-C.
Now 7-3, the Cougars next play Dec. 20 at home against Connersville. Richmond falls to 5-4.
Eastern Hancock 44, Lapel 42: The Royals continued their strong start, improving to 6-1 on the year with a big road win against the Bulldogs.
Guard Kiersten Schrope had nine points, 12 rebounds and four assists to lead the Royals in an all-around victory. Forward Kristen Eischen added eight points and six rebounds. Hannah Best had seven points. Kaytlin Eastes had five points and six boards. Nine different Royals scored.
The game was close throughout -- EH led 10-9 after a quarter, trailed 20-18 at halftime and 32-31 at the end of three.
Lapel fell to 3-4 with the loss.

Swimming
Cougars, Marauders split: Greenfield-Central's 400 free relay set a school record in beating Mt. Vernon 125-61 Tuesday night in a boy/girl dual swimming meet. Patrick Stutz, James Young, Cody Wilburn and Kyle Wilburn combined to put an exclamation point on their victory with the record.
The Cougars won all three relays, and got individual victories from Cody Wilburn in the 200 freestyle, Jon McCormick in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Stutz in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Young in the 100 butterfly and Erik Kile in the 500 freestyle.
Mt. Vernon used its depth to win the girls meet 98-87.
G-C's coaching staff cited the swims of Carly Fernandes in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Taylor Johnson in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, as well as Bethany Weldon and Kylie Smith.
MV's results were not provided to HancockCountySports.com.
Dragons sweep Royals: The New Palestine boys and girls swim teams prepared for their Thursday-night meet against rival Mt. Vernon with a pair of victories over Eastern Hancock.
The Dragon boys won 126-44. Winners were Christian Dodd in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Jake Uppfalt in the 100 butterfly, Zach Nagel is diving, Luke Steigerwalt in the 500 freestyle, David Thompson in the 100 backstroke, the 200 medley relay of Uppfalt, Grant Gish, Kelley Murphy and Steigerwalt; the 200 free relay of Thompson, Parker Horn, Jake Mitchell and Todd Horn, and the 400 free relay of Will Mitchell, Murphy, Seth Eagleson and Dodd.
Other strong swims were turned in by Devin Jones and Seth Eagleson in the 100 freestyle.
EH winners were Sam Carlton in the 50 frestyle and Trevor Jones in the 100 freestyle.
The Dragon girls won 120-52. Dragon winners were Erin Trimpe in the 200 freestyle, Lily Horn in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, Emily Bare in the 100 backstroke, Natalie Berea in the 100 breaststroke, Hannah Ayer in diving, Addison Virt in the 100 butterfly, the 200 medley relay team of Kayla Jameson, Claire Hornsby, Virt and Monica Neeb and the 200 free relay of Tricia Roberson, Becca Digney, Virt and Erin Trimpe.Virt's time in the 100 butterfly was eighth-best all-time at New Palestine.

Opening night redux
Wow.
Not just the new-look Marauder gymnasium -- which isn't complete yet, but still has received an overhaul that almost makes it unrecognizable to those of us who have been there in the past. It has new bleachers (and is double-decked on both sides), new lights, new paint job, new floor. Looks great, too (for those who might wonder ... yes, it's still a wise idea to wear short sleeves when you attend a game there. Some things don't change :) ).
However, what was even more impressive was the Marauders' performance against 2A #8 Lapel. MV showed it's worth every bit of its #4 ranking in Class 3A with a 68-39 victory. The Marauders won this with their defense -- using four different defenses during the game to befuddle Lapel and then using their size and quickness to create turnovers and turn them into transition baskets -- lots of transition hoops. Many of those touched off an 18-point first-half run that put the Marauders up 30-13. Lapel cut the deficit to 14 late in the third quarter, but MV quickly pushed the lead north of 20 and it stayed there.
Daniel Turner was impressive in his work ethic. He battled foul trouble, but he twice got position, missed the initial shot against 6-5 Lapel center Logan Ingle, and then stuck with it for a putback. He finished with 18 points, most of them in the 3rd and early 4th quartesr. But the guy who was most impressive was Jake Stafford, who scored 14 first-half points and ended up with 16 overall. He also had several rebounds and ran the point much of the night for the Marauders.
For the record, Turner scored the first basket in the newly-renovated gym -- a 3-pointer 12 seconds into the game. He actually scored the first six points in the new gym. MV center D'Armond Davis became the first to dunk, quickly flushing an alley-oop pass late in the third quarter (although it was the Marauders' fifth attempt at said dunk ... the other four went awry somehow). Quinn Williams, a transfer from Fishers, played some point guard and had the move of the night, running on the break using his 5-7 body against three significantly taller Lapel players, squirting through to hit a scoop shot and draw the foul for a 3-point play.
MV has a HUGE game Saturday, traveling to Hinkle Fieldhouse to face Hamilton Heights, the team that upset the Marauders in sectional play last year. Tipoff is approximately 4 p.m., right after the Marauder and Huskie girls play at 2:30.
Wednesday was a good night for Hancock County teams -- including the two we'll have on the next Game of the Week broadcast. Defending sectional champion New Palestine spoiled Dean Foster's debut as Jennings County coach by a 39-38 score. Eastern Hancock won its traditional opening game against Centerville 72-57. Greenfield-Central played Tuesday, and wasn't as fortunate in being doubled up by Richmond in Josh Johnson's debut with the Cougars.
Elsewhere in the HHC, Shelbyville won Tom Beach's debut as the Golden Bears' coach, knocking off Beech Grove 73-70. Pendleton Heights beat Alexandria Tuesday 68-61.
Everyone in Hancock is in action this weekend. In addition to the aforementioned MV game against HH, New Palestine travels to New Castle on Saturday, while Eastern Hancock visits Frankton the same day.
