Tonight has to be one of the most memorable nights of sectional hoops in local history, as both New Palestine and Eastern Hancock registered improbable come-from-behind wins to advance to the sectional finals.
New Palestine 61, Whiteland 60: The Dragons had to rally from deficits of 10-0 early and 46-34 late in the third quarter, but did with a huge fourth-quarter run. NP finished with an 8-1 run that allowed them to pull ahead. Trailing 59-53, Josh Penley hit a baseline jumper, then Solomon Haynes forced a steal and fed Justin Ikerd for an open 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one. After Whiteland's Kyle Alford split two free throws, Michael Morris hit a 17-footer from the left wing to tie the game at 60-60 with 25 seconds left.
Whiteland was trying to hold for the last shot, but Haynes stripped the Warriors at midcourt again. He had a breakaway layup, but was fouled from behind with 6.7 seconds left. An intentional foul was called, giving Haynes two free throws and the Dragons the ball. He hit one. NP missed the front end of a one-and-bonus with 3.7 left and Whiteland had an open look from the corner at the horn to win, but Luke Dougherty's shot fell short, allowing the Dragons to pull away with the victory.
Morris scored 16 points -- 14 in the second half -- to lead the Dragons in scoring. Ikerd and Penley each scored 12 -- with Ikerd hitting four of the Dragons' five 3-pointers. Reid Clark hit five shots -- most from outside -- to score 10 points. Brandon Collins added seven first-half points and Haynes scored his four points in the fourth quarter, also adding a key 3-point play midway through the period that launched the Dragons' rally from a double-digit deficit.
Whiteland was led by DeJuan Davis' 17 points and 16 from leading scorer Taylor Robards.
The Dragons advance to face either Franklin Central or Center Grove in the 7:30 p.m. Saturday championship game at CG. FC leads CG 33-16 at halftime.

Eastern Hancock 71, Cambridge City Lincoln 64: The Royals scored 16 points in the OT session and rallied from a late five-point deficit in an improbable way. Playing without leading scorer Victor Vincz due to an injury, the Royals also had two starters foul out in the fourth quarter. EH trailed 27-18 at halftime and 55-50 in the closing seconds. But Garrett Hancock was fouled on a 3-pointer and in the ensuing melee, a CCL player was called for a technical foul. Hancock hit all five free throws to tie the game up. EH missed a shot that would've sent the game to OT, but pulled away in the extra session.
Hancock had 22 points for EH. CCL senior Zac Rea led all scorers with 34 points.
EH is now 12-10, and will face either Centerville or Union County in Saturday's sectional final at Hagerstown.

Huge weekend of hoops!
We have a HUGE weekend of hoops in Hancock County, and therefore, at HancockCountySports.com!
Friday night, the New Palestine Dragons and Eastern Hancock Royals will both be in action, and both be playing at 6 p.m.
The Dragons (15-6) will face Whiteland (10-10) in the first semifinal of the 4A Center Grove sectional, which you can listen to live at HancockCountySports.com. The winner will face either Center Grove or Franklin Central in Saturday night's championship game. The game is a rematch of the Dragons' 88-81 loss to the Warriors on Jan. 21, in which New Palestine's Michael Morris (23), Josh Penley (20) and Brandon Collins (18) all had strong scoring games.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Hancock Royals (11-10) meet the Cambridge City Lincoln Golden Eagles (10-10) in the semifinals of the 2A Hagerstown sectional. EH advanced with a 69-51 victory over Hagerstown in the first round. CCL drew a first-round bye and is playing its first game in the tourney, and has dropped three straight to Centerville, Greenfield-Central and Winchester at the end of the season. The game matches two big scorers, as Victor Vincz is the county's leading scorer, having poured in 23 vs. Hagerstown, and Zac Rea of CCL is capable of putting up big offensive numbers. Tuesday's games
All four Hancock County teams were in action Tuesday night, and two remain alive in the IHSAA boys basketball tournament.
New Palestine and Eastern Hancock both posted first-round sectional wins and advanced to Friday night. Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon both fell in their openers.
New Palestine 51, Franklin 45: Michael Morris had 18 points as the Dragons pulled away from the Grizzly Cubs in the second half. NP improved to 15-6 on the season with the victory. NP trailed 10-4 early and was behind 20-19 at the half before rallying to take the lead in the third quarter and never relinquishing it. Morris hit several shots down the stretch to lead the Dragons. NP outscored Franklin 12-5 in the third to take a 31-25 lead going into the final eight minutes.
Morris hit 8-of-12 shots from the floor to score his 18 points, and also had seven rebounds. Josh Penley had 13 points and nine boards. Brandon Collins had eight points and three rebounds. Solomon Haynes added seven points. Reid Clark had five rebounds inside.
The Dragons will advance to play Whiteland on Friday night, a rematch of the Warriors' 88-81 win on Jan. 21. The game will tip off at 6 p.m., join Andrew & Chris for the play-by-play at 5:35 at HancockCountySports.com.
Eastern Hancock 68, Hagerstown 51: A big second quarter turned a 9-8 lead into a 30-16 halftime edge, and the Royals kept pulling away from there. Victor Vincz scored 23 points to help EH avenge a defeat from Friday night.
The Royals are now 11-10 on the year. They will face Cambridge City Lincoln at 6 p.m. Friday at Hagerstown.
Guerin Catholic 35, Mt. Vernon 28: Both teams' defenses were stifling, holding the opponent to below 35 percent shooting. But the 10th-ranked Golden Eagles used theirs to take a lead in the third quarter, turning a couple of steals by Riley Rapp and a couple of charges taken by Zach Hufford to get the defensive stands, and cashed in on the other end. Guerin turned a 15-13 halftime deficit into a 23-20 lead going into the fourth, and then used a two-minute possession that ended in an Aaron Brennan putback with 4:05 left that made it 25-20.
MV had two open 3-pointers to tie the game in the final two and a half minutes, but both were long and Guerin was able to secure the rebound.
C.J. Coleman had 12 points to lead MV. Anthony Burnett added nine. Stephen Turner had 10 boards. Bryan Hall scored 10 points -- including five fourth-quarter free throws to help put the game away -- to lead Guerin. Brennan, a solid sophomore who has been drawing major college interest, had nine points and seven rebounds.
MV's season ends at 13-8. Guerin is now 18-5 and advances to face Howe in Friday's semifinals.
Interestingly, Tuesday's game was the second-fewest points ever allowed by Mt. Vernon in a tournament game (and the fewest ever allowed in a sectional game). The only game that eclipsed it was a 45-30 regional victory against Greensburg in 2010. The 28 points were the fewest scored by MV in a tournament game.
Connersville 58, Greenfield-Central 27: The Spartans knocked off G-C for the second time in a week. Connersville jumped out to a 33-12 halftime edge and never looked back in the victory. G-C's season finishes at 3-18. Connersville will face #2 Pendleton Heights in Friday's semifinal.

Saturday night
No shattered backboards tonight, just a couple of games where Hancock County teams scored a season-high in points, but only one won.
Greenfield-Central won its first game of the year by beating Shelbyville 66-55. The Cougars scored a season-high 66 points -- matter of fact, it was 23 points more than their high that had been set last week when they totaled 43 against Triton Central. The Cougars were led by Mason Irbe's 24 points -- a career high for the G-C junior.
Tyler Batton had 15 points and Jordan Keener 14 for G-C. Grant Wolfe added seven points.
G-C jumped up to a fifth-place tie in the HHC with the victory, as the Cougars are now 1-11 (1-3). The Cougars next play Friday at Pendleton Heights, then host Eastern Hancock Saturday in a game we'll broadcast at HancockCountySports.com.
Whiteland 88, New Palestine 81: The Dragons scored a season-high 81 points -- including 38 in a fourth quarter that saw the two teams combine for 70 points -- but fell on the road to Whiteland.
NP fell behind quickly -- Whiteland roared out to a 21-11 lead after a quarter -- and kept chipping back into the game. Whiteland led 33-25 at the half, but scored 23 in the third to take a 56-43 lead going into the wild final quarter.
Josh Penley scored a season-high 23 points for the Dragons. He hit 8-of-14 from the floorMichael Morris added 20 points, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. The Dragons hit eight 3-pointers in the game, and shot 49 percent from the floor (30-61). Brandon Collins tied his career high with 18 points, hitting 7-of-10 shots. Reid Clark and Solomon Haynes scored nine each. Clark also had a game-high seven rebounds. Penley had four assists and four steals, while Haynes had three assists.
Meanwhile, Whiteland shot a blistering 65 percent from the floor (25-38) and hit 75 percent from the 3-point arc (12-16). The Warriors also shot 26-of-33 from the line.

Friday wrap: NP girls, G-C boys fall
The New Palestine girls basketball team dropped a 52-50 decision to 4A No. 8 Columbus East at home Friday night.
The Dragons led throughout much of the second and third quarters, but a 9-2 run for Columbus East to start the fourth allowed the Olympians to take the lead and they held on from there.
Bethany Murrell scored a game-high 16 points for the Dragons -- all in the opening half, allowing NP to open up a 29-27 lead at the break. Lauren Tieman scored a career-high 14 points, and also grabbed seven rebounds. The Dragons' Abby Seifert grabbed 11 rebounds.
Columbus East was led by 15 points by sophomore center Allyson Bunch and 12 from guard Courtney Hunter. Division I recruit Courtney Ogle had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.
East led 52-48 in the closing minutes, thanks to a basket by Kailey Smith and two free throws by Courtney Hunter. Tieman scored with 13 seconds left on a beautiful under-the-basket feed from Murrell to cut it to 52-50. NP had a shot when the Olympians missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Ogle forced a steal and dribbled out the clock.
The Dragons are now 1-4 and open conference play Saturday, Dec. 2 against Delta, with a 1 p.m. JV tipoff. Columbus East is now 3-0. East head coach Danny Brown won his 200th career game.

Saturday GBB recap
Two local girls basketball teams remained unbeaten while another dropped a close game Saturday night.
New Palestine won its season opener by a narrow 54-52 margin over Whiteland in overtime. A see-saw game that saw nobody hold a lead bigger than four after a quick 10-3 burst by the Dragons to start the game saw Bethany Murrell score 12 of the Dragons' last 14 points and 24 overall in the victory. Murrell hit a shot with 3.6 seconds left that appeared to give the Dragons a victory. But Whiteland's Michaela Harris hit a shot from the post and drew a foul with 0.3 seconds left.
Murrell finished with 24 points, six rebounds and three steals. Lauren Tieman added 10 points and eight rebounds. Abby Seifert had eight boards. Emily Curry had eight points, five boards and two steals. Tori Stephenson had three assists.
The Dragons outrebounded Whiteland 38-23. Kaitlyn Phillips led the Warriors with 12 points. Perry had 11 points, Karley Beam added 10 points and four assists, and Harris had eight points and nine rebounds.
The Dragons are now 1-0 on the year after their first victory over Whiteland since the 2004-05 season. Whiteland is 1-1. NP next plays its home opener Tuesday against Franklin Central.
Eastern Hancock 60, Muncie South 48: The Royals improved to 2-0 on the young season under new head coach Jeremy Powers. EH jumped ahead 21-5 after a quarter and kept the lead in double digits at each quarter stop from there.
Kristen Eischen had 19 points, 15 rebounds and four steals to lead the Royals. Kaytlin Eastes had 11 points. Lauren Harmon had seven points and six rebounds. Kiersten Schrope had eight boards and five assists. The Royals next play Saturday, Nov. 19 against Horizon Christian at home.
Franklin 43, Greenfield-Central 37: The Cougars dropped a close game to the Grizzly Cubs in a matchup that was tight throughout. Franklin pulled away from a 30-28 lead at the end of the third.
G-C is now 1-1 on the year. The Cougars next play Tuesday at New Castle.
3A No. 1 Mt. Vernon was idle tonight after a 49-31 victory at Connersville. The Marauders will next play Tuesday against Lawrence Central.

Opening night
If you were able to listen to tonight's broadcast, you're probably scratching your head. If you weren't, make sure you listen to the archived broadcast when it gets posted sometime Saturday afternoon.
I love opening night. I love it even more when you have games like this to watch.
New Palestine 22, Whiteland 16, OT. But that's only half the story. Tim Able's first game as the Dragons' head coach will be one that won't be forgotten for a long time.
The opening kickoff probably signaled we were in for a crazy game -- Whiteland's Drew Smyth returned it 60+ yards into NP territory, then lost the ball. Smyth would eventually have a huge night -- 143 yards rushing, 2 TDs and he really helped carry the Warriors in the 2nd half, when he had 110 of his yards.
It was about what we expected early -- NP used its experience to take a lead, then Whiteland came alive in the second half. Pat Feeney had two TDs -- a 58-yard reception for the first score and a 10-yard run for the winning score in OT -- and 132 yards from scrimmage. He also had an interception deep in NP territory to end a Whiteland threat. NP quarterback Cary Albrecht was solid, completing 5-of-6 for 80 yards and 2 TDs, and also using his legs to help set up NP's final regulation score. The first TD to Feeney was an athletic play -- he came back for an underthrown ball, caught it, bounced off a tackle and ran it in. NP then added another score right before halftime, then hit a FG on the first drive of the second half to go up 16-0. Whiteland, led by Smyth, came back, first with a 63-yard TD run, then with a 14-yard TD midway through the fourth.
The Warriors' sophomore QB Tommy Riegel then came alive. He completed three straight passes on the final drive -- one on 4th-and-9, another on third-and-long -- and then hurried his team to the line in less than 10 seconds after a 17-yard completion to spike the ball with one second left, setting up Jordan Laforet's sidewinding 30-yard field goal that snuck inside the uprights.
Whew. And that was just regulation.
Feeney touched the ball on NP's first play. It became NP's only play, as he swept left, hurdled the only would-be tackler, and walked into the end zone. Then Chris Poland came alive, stopping the Warriors for a loss on 2nd down, then batting down a pass on 3rd down. A 4th-down heave toward the corner of the end zone fell incomplete, and a mob of red jerseys was quickly on the field.
Wow! What a game!
Stats were basically even -- NP 225 yards, Whiteland 211. NP dominated the first half (13-0), Whiteland dominated the second (16-3). The game was basically even, with a lot of twists and turns (even found in the weather conditions -- it went from late-summer perfection to rainy to perfect and calm to windy to monsoon to steady rain and calm all in one night). But the twists and turns create a great storyline, one Jim Ryan & I were happy to bring to you.

Triton Central 42, Eastern Hancock 14. TC has been in its "up" cycle of late, and the Tigers get a nice season-opening win. These two teams have played each other in the opener for years, but will be a conference game next year, when EH joins the Mid-Indiana Football Conference.
Yorktown 28, Pendleton Heights 21. When the Tigers look at the newspaper tomorrow, they'll be the HHC leaders. Good win for a team that was hit hard by graduation, as PH had a bit of talent. The Arabians meet Greenfield-Central next week.
Delta 56, Jay County 6. Looks like the Eagles have their usual explosive offense. And they certainly backed up their No. 10 ranking in the IFCA poll. Next up for the Eagles: New Palestine.
Rushville 46, Connersville 24. A shootout tonight. Rushville is a team that will turn a lot of heads this season.
Shelbyville 35, Greensburg 14. Nice win for Pat Parks and the Golden Bears, who appear to be picking up where they've left off the last couple of years.
