Mt. Vernon posted a 49-31 victory over New Palestine in girls basketball Thursday night, scoring the game's first seven point to take an early lead, then pulling away with an 18-7 fourth quarter.
The victory gave the Marauders a stranglehold on the HHC race, giving them a one-game lead past the halfway point of conference play. MV is 4-0 in league play with three games left -- against Delta, Shelbyville and Greenfield-Central -- and has beaten several of the teams who would be considered top contenders.
Tonight's game was another step in that process. Jessica Brown started the game with five quick points -- giving her 1,000 for her career. Although she finished with seven points, she also had five assists to lead the Marauders in that category.
Where MV showed its muscle was on the glass. 6-footers Erica Moore and Makenzi Reasor helped the Marauders to 14 offensive rebounds and a 12-0 edge in second-chance points. Reasor had a strong all-around game with 18 points and seven boards. Moore had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Both had several key putbacks with the game on the line down the stretch.
Rachel Houck also had seven points for the Marauders, including two big second-half 3-pointers that helped MV pull away.
The Dragons had a

The New Palestine and Mt. Vernon swim teams split a dual swim meet Thursday night. The New Palestine girls Mt. Vernon 101-85 on Thursday night, while the Marauder boys won 95-90.
"This was an exciting meet. This rivalry always bring out the best
performances from both schools," NP coach Steve Maxwell said.
NPHS junior Emily Trimpe set a school record in the 100
freestyle, a time of 55.64 leading a 1-2 finish for the Dragons. Other
winners for the girls were Jordan Rogers in the 200 IM (the sixth-best
performance in NP history), Karen Emminger in the 50 freestyle and
Trimpe again in the 100 breaststroke. The Dragons also won the 200 free
relay with Trimpe, Jordan Rogers, Emminger and Olivia Ayer; and the 400
free relay with Rogers, Emminger, Katie Mustard and Trimpe.
Mt. Vernon winners were Eve Gonzales in the 200 freestyle and 500
freestyle, Lauren Reifel leading a 1-2-3 finish in diving, Maddie Powell
in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke and the 200 medley relay team
of Jessica Hantz, Ellen Werner, Powell and Jessica Blackburn.
In the boys meet, Mt. Vernon winners were David Cochran in diving, Drew Logan in the 500 freestyle, David Hantz in the 100 backstroke, Kenny Gilpin in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 medley relay team of Hantz, Gilpin, Ian Hanssen and Reid Eberhard
The Dragons saw Jake Grieg swim the second-fastest time in school history in winning the 200 freestyle,
teaming up with Grant Gish for a 1-2 finish. Greig and Gish also
finished 1-2 in the 50 freestyle. Sam Baker won the 100 freestyle and
200 IM, Luke Steigerwalt took the 100 butterfly -- with Klay Simmons
finishing second. Greig, Gish, Simmons and Baker won the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay.
"We had our best 'team performance' of the season," NP coach
Steve Maxwell said. "We've had good individual swims in all our meets,
but this was good across the board."

Basketball weekend
Lots of basketball this weekend starts tonight, with a BIG girls game between New Palestine and 3A No. 3 Mt. Vernon.
The Dragons are 3-5 against a top-25 schedule, but could easily be 7-1 as four of their losses have been in down-to-the-wire games. The Marauders are 6-2, with both defeats to 4A programs having strong years. The game features four players who will be playing at the next level next year -- MV's Makenzi Reasor (Indiana State) and Jessica Brown (Indiana Wesleyan) along with NP's Bethany Murrell (Florida Gulf Coast) and Tori Stephenson (Danville Area CC).
The game also features two of the area's top rebounders in NP's Lauren Tieman and Abby Seifert -- the latter of which is averaging more than 10 rebounds per game -- and MV's Reasor and Anna Olson. Both teams are senior-laden, and this could be the final meeting for these teams as currently constituted.
The other big key is the HHC race. MV can take a full-game lead on the conference going into the Christmas break with games remaining against Delta, Greenfield-Central and Shelbyville. Should the Dragons win, it would forge a 4-way tie at the top of the conference, with tonight's two participants, G-C and Pendleton Heights -- who are both 3-1 in league play.

Knightstown at Eastern Hancock: More hoops on Friday, with the Royals and Panthers facing off in a doubleheader. First, let's look at the boys. EH is 3-2, and is two baskets away from being a perfect 5-0 on the year. Knightstown is 1-4, as both teams are retooling a bit after graduating strong senior classes last season. Victor Vincz had 27 points in EH's 68-53 victory over Sheridan on Saturday. He and Jared Pyle lead EH in scoring. Knightstown has a young team led by Clay Ratliff, who is nearly averaging a double-double.
On the girls side, EH is 6-1, enjoying its best start in years, led by sophomore guard Kiersten Schrope, who has scored, rebounded and handled the ball for the Royals. Sophomore Kristen Eischen does a lot of the work up front. But Knightstown poses a tough test. The Panthers are experienced, with four players averaging between 9-11 points per game, and they are coming off a victory over New Castle last week. Knightstown is 5-3.

The Dragons have dominated the series recently, and have a deep, senior-laden team that's 3-1 on the year. Morristown does feature one of the state's top scorers in Dylan Langkabel, who is headed to Northwood University in Michigan to play next year. Expect a good matchup.
Shelbyville at Mt. Vernon, 7:30: The Marauders are 2-2, but are ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by the Sagarin ratings. MV has played four tough opponents so far, so the winless Golden Bears (0-4) could be a good opportunity for the Marauders to get a lift going into the county tournament. And it happens without legendary FC coach Mark James on the sidelines, as he took his boots to Ben Davis. The Flashes are 3-2 under new coach John Rockey, and are coming off big wins over Columbus North and Fishers. This could be a preview of the Center Grove sectional. Wednesday wrap: G-C wrestlers win
On the night Gordon Nesbit was inducted into the Greenfield-Central wrestling Hall of Fame, the Cougar wrestlers defeated Speedway 55-15 at home Wednesday.
G-C's JV also won 51-6.

Tuesday wrap: EH, G-C girls continue hot streaks
Greenfield-Central's girls basketball team has the longest hot streak going of any school in the county. It continued Tuesday, as the Cougars won their sixth straight game, beating Richmond 53-37.
The Cougars started red-hot, shutting out the Red Devils in a 16-0 first quarter. They continued from there, building the lead to 35-16 at halftime and 49-28 at the end of three.
Senior guard LaRae Cruz -- fresh off a 30-point game in Saturday's overtime victory over Chatard -- followed it up with a 21-point effort. Junior Katie Peters scored 10 points in a double-figure game. Ashley Chase added nine points for G-C.
Now 7-3, the Cougars next play Dec. 20 at home against Connersville. Richmond falls to 5-4.
Eastern Hancock 44, Lapel 42: The Royals continued their strong start, improving to 6-1 on the year with a big road win against the Bulldogs.
Guard Kiersten Schrope had nine points, 12 rebounds and four assists to lead the Royals in an all-around victory. Forward Kristen Eischen added eight points and six rebounds. Hannah Best had seven points. Kaytlin Eastes had five points and six boards. Nine different Royals scored.

The Cougars won all three relays, and got individual victories from Cody Wilburn in the 200 freestyle, Jon McCormick in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Stutz in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Young in the 100 butterfly and Erik Kile in the 500 freestyle.
Mt. Vernon used its depth to win the girls meet 98-87.
G-C's coaching staff cited the swims of Carly Fernandes in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Taylor Johnson in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, as well as Bethany Weldon and Kylie Smith.

Winners were Christian Dodd in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Jake Uppfalt in the 100 butterfly, Zach Nagel is diving, Luke Steigerwalt in the 500 freestyle, David Thompson in the 100 backstroke, the 200 medley relay of Uppfalt, Grant Gish, Kelley Murphy and Steigerwalt; the 200 free relay of Thompson, Parker Horn, Jake Mitchell and Todd Horn, and the 400 free relay of Will Mitchell, Murphy, Seth Eagleson and Dodd.
Other strong swims were turned in by Devin Jones and Seth Eagleson in the 100 freestyle.
EH winners were Sam Carlton in the 50 frestyle and Trevor Jones in the 100 freestyle.

New polls out
Mt. Vernon's girls basketball team moved two spots to No. 3 in the Class 3A poll this week.
The Marauders had been No. 1 since the preseason poll, remaining there after a loss to Lawrence Central. MV moved two spots after last week's loss to Anderson, a team receiving 4A poll votes.

Successful night for county hoop squads
It was a successful day & evening for the county basketball teams.
Earlier, you read about Mt. Vernon's 64-24 victory over Yorktown. Tonight, three other basketball teams in the county joined them as winners.
Let's start with boys basketball
Eastern Hancock 68, Sheridan 53: The Royals bounced back nicely from Friday's loss to Northeastern, in which EH lost a 21-point lead. Sheridan was also coming off a big victory.

Greenfield-Central 60, Chatard 53, OT: LaRae Cruz had a career night for the Cougars, scoring 30 points to lead G-C to an overtime victory.
The victory was the Cougars' fifth straight, and gave them a 6-3 mark for the year.
The Cougars jumped ahead 15-8 after a quarter, but Chatard used an 11-4 third quarter to take the lead at 37-34. The teams were tied 49-all going to OT,
In addition to Cruz's 30, the Cougars also got contributions from freshman Regan Lewis (8 points) and junior frontliners Katie Peters (7 points) and junior center Sara Jones (7 points).
G-C next plays Tuesday at home against Richmond.

Eastern Hancock 68, Sheridan 53: The Royals bounced back nicely from Friday's loss to Northeastern, in which EH lost a 21-point lead. Sheridan was also coming off a big victory.

New Palestine 59, Shelbyville 35: The Dragons commanded the glass in the opening half, built a 25-9 lead, extended it to 30-13 at halftime and cruised to a victory over the Golden Bears.

Saturday roundup: MV girls win big
Mt. Vernon's girls basketball team had a resounding 64-24 victory over Yorktown at home Saturday afternoon.
The Marauders led 20-3 after a quarter, 39-5 at the half and 51-11 after three quarters of the victory.
MV was led by Jessica Brown's 18 points. Makenzi Reasor and Rachel Houck added 12 each for the Marauders. Anna Olson scored eight. Mikaela Whitinger led the Tigers with seven points.
Brown is now five points away from reaching the 1,000-point mark for her career.
