Tuesday wrapup: NP, MV soccer teams win big
The New Palestine and Mt. Vernon boys soccer teams posted HUGE victories on Tuesday, heading into next Tuesday's showdown on the Marauders' home field. You can listen to the play-by-play of NP at MV on www.hancockcountysports.com.
The Dragons played their first full game of the season Tuesday and did so in grand style, beating Whiteland 8-0. NP scored six times in the first half and added two more in the second. Junior Bryson Basaran scored four goals. Senior John Ernster had two goals in the first half from his midfield position. Alex Thomas had three assists. Ryan Perkins had a goal and an assist. Zach Chester added a second-half goal. Daniel Wright and Ty Fidler both had assists. Fidler also had a strong game in the midfield.
Jaron Pridgen made three saves in net for the shutout, with center back Matt Ernster helping a strong defense.
"Rain or shine, the boys know they have to go hard every game," NP coach Bobby Holden said. "They did well today in the game."
The victory was Holden's first as the Dragons' head coach. The Dragons return home Thursday against Franklin.
Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon throttled Delta 12-0. Mouhamed Kanate had four first-half goals and added two assists. Adam Luke scored twice for the Marauders, while Kyle Cansler, Trevor Johnson, Luke Fimreite, C.J. Coleman, Cole Justus and Matt Powell all scored for MV. Johnson, Fimreite, Eric Thompson and Kyle Pruitt all had assists. Corban Hartley and Drew Kammerer combined on the shutout. MV is now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in HHC play. The Marauders visit Warren Central Thursday.

Mt. Vernon 3, Lapel 0: The Marauders rolled to a 25-15, 25-20, 25-17 victory over Lapel Tuesday night. MV moved to 5-1 on the season with the victory.

Monday roundup: NP girls soccer wins
Girls soccer
New Palestine 3, Perry Meridian 2: Lauren Joray scored two goals and assisted on Morgan Parish's second-half game-winner as the Dragons won their season opener. Parish scored with just over 26 minutes left in the second half, five minutes after the Falcons had tied it. Joray scored twice in the first half, both on Lindsay Meyer assists. The Dragons are now 1-0.
Boys tennis
Mt. Vernon 5, Shenandoah 0: The Marauders got off to a fine start with five straight-set victories. Bryce Bobb won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Kendall Ryan and Reid Eberhard both won 6-0, 6-0 at singles. MV's doubles teams of Ben Bobb/Jake Shephard and Corey Beck/Zak Weaver also won their matches, each dropping only three games. The Marauders are 1-0.
Girls golf
Cougars 2nd, Royals 3rd: Greenfield-Central was second and Eastern Hancock third in a three-way meet at Royal Hylands in Knightstown. Beech Grove won with a 188, while G-C carded a 197 and EH a 211. Hannah Boaz (50) and Rachel Boaz (51) led the Royals. Macy Fout (54) and Hailey Carlton (56) also scored for EH.

It's MV vs. Roncalli for regional title
Mt. Vernon's boys soccer team improved to 14-4-2 with a 2-1 OT victory over Shelbyville Wednesday. Trevor Johnson's cross deflected off a Shelby player's head and into the goal with 4:11 left in OT to give the Marauders a victory -- just nine seconds after the Golden Bears went down a man due to a red card. Jake Brown scored the Marauders' first goal at 65:49 on a great cross from Eric Thompson to the goalmouth, but Shelby's Alex Collier answered with a really nice goal off a throw-in. It was a fun, back-and-forth game where the defenses were kept on their toes most of the night.
MV plays Roncalli for the regional title at 7 p.m. Saturday -- the Rebels beat Richmond 4-3 tonight. We will be on-air at 6:45 p.m.

Saturday night
Make sure to listen to HancockCountySports.com on Saturday night, as we bring you the boys soccer sectional championship game from New Palestine. The semifinals will be in the day -- one game has already been played, as Mt. Vernon defeated Howe 11-0 in the first-round game Thursday.
We go on at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame for the title game.
Semifinal pairings:
10 a.m.: New Palestine vs. Greenfield-Central
Noon: Mt. Vernon vs. Warren Central
The semifinals are a toss-up, as NP and G-C went to a shootout during the regular season, while WC defeated MV 2-1 when those two teams met, and the Marauders made significant changes shortly thereafter to improve their team.

Thursday roundup
Had a good game to broadcast tonight as Mt. Vernon beat Greenfield-Central 2-0 in boys soccer. It was an even game with a lot of midfield play and some quick counters in the first half, but Eric Ahonen scored on a PK 6:31 into the second half to put MV on the board. Matt Horton drew the PK by drawing a foul on the left side of the box. Twenty minutes later, the Marauders' Kyle Cansler scored again on a one-on-one move to beat the Cougar keeper to make it 2-0.
MV held a territorial advantage an increasing amount in the second half, but the game had a lot of spirited play on both sides. Marauders now 6-2 (5-1), while the Cougars are 4-3-1 (1-1).

MV-NP soccer
Impressive game tonight by New Palestine on the soccer field, one where NP held a lot of the possession, and scored three goals in an 11-minute first-half flurry to beat Mt. Vernon 4-0. Will Kramer made three saves to get the shutout in net, while Steve Selke continued his torrid early-season pace with two goals. Drew Dickerson opened the scoring just 9:01 into the game by hammering a loose ball that came to him in the box into the far-post netting. Selke added one on a quick turn after a cross from Aaron Pfeifer a hair over two minutes later. Zach Weaver drilled a long feed from Ty Fidler halfway through the first half, and Selke scored his second goal by converting a cross from Wes Fox midway through the second half. I was also very impressed with NP defenders Austin Timmerman and Fidler, who always seemed to be around the ball. Timmerman did a good job of slowing MV's attack on the left side repeatedly and then turning things the other way. Selke now has nine goals on the year, and has scored in all of the Dragons' five games.
It was a largely cleanly-played game in front of a standing-room-only crowd, and one the NP students celebrated by running across the field to greet their team after the postgame handshakes.
NP is now 5-0 (2-0 HHC), while MV is 3-2 (3-1 HHC). Dragons visit Guerin Catholic on Thursday, Marauders visit Anderson Thursday.
Next soccer broadcast is Thursday, Sept. 9's contest between Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central from MV. Airtime 6:30 p.m.
