Thursday wrap: G-C, NP soccer win

Greenfield-Central and New Palestine appear headed for a key Hoosier Heritage Conference showdown next Thursday night in our HancockCountySports.com broadcast after both had big HHC victories tonight.

G-C beat Mt. Vernon 1-0 in the game you heard live on HancockCountySports.com. The Cougars' Joe Hudson scored 4:32 into the second half, heading a beautiful goalmouth cross into the net. Collin Kleckner had his fifth shutout of the season as G-C moved to 5-2-1/2-0. MV is now 6-3/3-3.

Meanwhile, New Palestine beat Shelbyville 3-2. John Ernster scored twice -- including the game-winner in the second half, which gave NP a 3-0 lead at the time. Bryson Basaran also had a first-half goal, while Ty Fidler assisted on the game-winner. Jaron Pridgen had the victory in net for the 6-1 Dragons. They are now 2-0 in HHC play.


Girls soccer
New Palestine 12, Rushville 0: The Dragons improved to 8-0-2 on the year. Amy Hilton, Katie Matus and Richelle Dennison all scored their first career varsity goals as the Dragons jumped out to a 7-0 halftime lead.

NP needed less than eight minutes to jump ahead 4-0 on two goals by Kalli Shepler-Tucker bookended by tallies from Lindsay Meyer and Lauren Joray that came 23 seconds apart.



Shepler-Tucker's goals gave her seven on the year. Joray has a team-high nine goals and added an assist in the game. Meyer added two assists to raise her season totals to three goals and 10 assists.



Madison Parish had two goals and an assist -- while Morgan Parish had a goal and two assists. The Parish sisters assisted on one of each others' goals. Morgan Carpenter had a goal and an assist, as did Dennison. Lauren Kehrt scored her fifth goal of the season. Jennifer Roberts had two assists. Alyssa Mouzin had an assist.

Volleyball
New Castle 3, Greenfield-Central 0: The Cougars fell 25-17, 25-13, 25-15 to one of the state's premier teams. Skylar Stigall had 14 kills and nine digs to lead the Trojans.


Girls golf
Shelbyville 201, New Palestine 219: The Dragons fell to Shelbyville Thursday at Bear Chase GC in Shelbyville.


Abby Poole led NP with a 51. Sarah Rose shot 54, Bailey Kamp 55 and Michaela Merlau totaled a 59. Shawna Phelps of Shelbyville was medalist with a 47.

Monday roundup: NP girls soccer wins

Girls soccer
New Palestine 3, Perry Meridian 2: Lauren Joray scored two goals and assisted on Morgan Parish's second-half game-winner as the Dragons won their season opener. Parish scored with just over 26 minutes left in the second half, five minutes after the Falcons had tied it. Joray scored twice in the first half, both on Lindsay Meyer assists. The Dragons are now 1-0.

Boys tennis
Mt. Vernon 5, Shenandoah 0: The Marauders got off to a fine start with five straight-set victories. Bryce Bobb won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Kendall Ryan and Reid Eberhard both won 6-0, 6-0 at singles. MV's doubles teams of Ben Bobb/Jake Shephard and Corey Beck/Zak Weaver also won their matches, each dropping only three games. The Marauders are 1-0.

Girls golf
Cougars 2nd, Royals 3rd: Greenfield-Central was second and Eastern Hancock third in a three-way meet at Royal Hylands in Knightstown. Beech Grove won with a 188, while G-C carded a 197 and EH a 211. Hannah Boaz (50) and Rachel Boaz (51) led the Royals. Macy Fout (54) and Hailey Carlton (56) also scored for EH.
