It's a matchup with two top 10 teams at Hamilton Heights when No. 1 Mt. Vernon meets No. 6 Rushville in the first semifinal game of their sectional. In Class 3A, No. 1 Mt. Vernon (18-1) will face No. 6 Rushville (13-6) -- the three-time defending sectional champ and last year's state runner-up -- in the first game on Friday night. MV won 56-33 in November. New Palestine (10-9) meets Shelbyville (4-14) on Tuesday night, with the winner facing host No. 4 Hamilton Heights on Friday.
In Class 4A at Muncie Central, Greenfield-Central drew a bye and will face the Anderson-Muncie Central winner in the semifinals. The Tribe and the Bearcats are both 7-12 on the year.
In Class 2A, Eastern Hancock (3-15) will face rival and defending champion Knightstown (14-5) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9 in the opening round of the Centerville girls basketball sectional. Knightstown won the regular-season matchup 55-36 over the Royals.

Wrestling sectional results
The four Hancock County schools competed in the Warren Central wrestling sectional Saturday afternoon, and 13 local athletes will be moving on to next Saturday's Perry Meridian regional.
G-C's Josh Farrell and Dezman McGinley and NP sophomore Robbie Elsea all were sectional champions, and 10 others moved on by virtue of placing in the top four in their individual weight classes.
Overall, the Cougars finished fifth in the standings with 134 points, New Palestine finished sixth with 105.5 and Mt. Vernon was ninth out of 10 teams with 63 points. Eastern Hancock did not have any wrestlers place in the top six and earn team points.
New Palestine had five wrestlers move on. Elsea (32-6) won the 130-pound weight class by defeating Shelbyville's Cody Clark in the final.
There were three runners-up for the Dragons. Sophomore Taylor Fee (31-5) fell to Roncalli's Josh King in the final match at 112. Sophomore Gordon Wagner (27-8) was runner-up to Roncalli's Josh Kieffer at 125. Kieffer's brother Joe defeated NP sophomore Nick Ulrey (26-7) in the title match at 140. Freshman Rylan McCarty (26-13) advanced at 103 by finishing fourth.

McGinley is now 32-3, and defeatred Roncalli's Joe Ardizzone in the title match at 160 to give him a top seed for the regional next week. Farrell is ranked fifth in the state at 119, according to Indiana Mat. McGinley is 19th at 160.

Royals victorious ... MV girls fall from unbeaten ranks
The annual (and often twice annual) matchups between Eastern Hancock and Greenfield-Central are often great, closely-contested games -- and the fact that they had split their last eight meetings shows that.
It was certainly the case tonight. EH pulled away to a 44-38 victory, but it was a close game throughout. The Royals scored eight points on the game's first three possessions, but G-C slowly worked its way back into the game and took two third-quarter leads. But EH's 3-point shooting -- the Royals hit seven 3s -- proved to be the difference.
Dustin Smith had 20 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field (4-of-5 from deep) and 6-of-6 from the line. Not only did he hit triples on the Royals' first two possessions of the game, he also hit a big 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to help the Royals open up a lead, and then hit four late FTs to salt the game away. Zach Kissick and Jared Pyle had nine points each for the Royals.
G-C was led by Jared Morris' 19 points, as the junior guard had a very strong night shooting the ball and running the Cougars' patient offense.
The teams were lights-out shooting in the first half -- EH was 70%, G-C 67% -- but both cooled a bit after the break as the defenses ratcheted up.
An interesting sidelight: EH got its first victory over a county school this year in four tries -- but of the three previous ones, two were decided at the buzzer. G-C is 5-9 but still leads the Hoosier Heritage Conference. The Cougars have not won a game against a non-HHC foe this year, but are 5-2 against HHC teams (4-1 in conference games, 1-1 in the Hancock County Tourney).
Elsewhere:
Mt. Vernon's girls fell from the ranks of the unbeaten and saw their 35-game regular-season perfect streak end with a 38-35 loss at North Central. The Marauders are 18-1 and face Shenandoah on Thursday in the regular-season finale.
The Marauder boys played their fourth straight down-to-the-wire game tonight, but fell to Delta 54-52 on the road. MV is now 4-10 (1-4). MV's next game is Saturday at Warren Central.

Marauders, Dragons victorious
Mt. Vernon and Connersville were two teams led by outstanding senior guards who were just looking for a bit of consistency heading into the season's homestretch.
The Marauders got it in a 46-44 victory.
The two senior guards didn't disappoint -- MV's Quinn Williams scored 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting and led two key Marauder runs that helped open up leads of 19-10 and 28-20. Connersville's Zach Miller scored 19 points and hit back-to-back 3-pointers that cut an eight-point Marauder lead to 38-36 late.
And then it was time for the young players to shine. Freshman C.J. Coleman and sophomore Anthony Burnett hit 8-of-10 from the line in the final 1:25 to fend off Connersville's comeback -- although two more desperation 3s gave the Spartans a chance to win it with a triple at the buzzer that hit the rim and bounded off.
The Marauders did it with free throws -- they were 10-of-14 in the final quarter -- possession (six turnovers) and defense/rebounding. They held Connersville to 40% shooting (15-40), while shooting just under 50% themselves (15-31). Stephen Turner had a big game on the glass, and Coleman (nine points) and Burnett (10 points) were key complementary scorers, especially given they combined for nine in the fourth quarter.
MV has played three straight one-possession games. The Marauders (4-9/1-3) dive back into HHC play Saturday at Delta. Tip is 7:45 p.m.
Elsewhere ... all of the eyes in the HHC were on tonight's contest between Greenfield-Central and Pendleton Heights. The Cougars came in with the HHC lead and a win would put them in great shape heading into the final couple of conference games. Meanwhile, the Arabians needed a win to stay in the conference race.
PH got the win, but it was in a tight game. The Arabians won 59-50, forging a virtual three-way tie in the HHC race. PH is now 5-1 in conference play, while G-C (5-8) and Rushville are both 4-1. The Cougars and Rushville play each other late in the season. G-C also has a huge game against Delta next week.

Coming up ...
First off, congrats to the Mt. Vernon Marauders' girls team on winning the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship. The Marauders, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, pulled away from Delta in the second half to win Wednesday night, led by Rachel Houck's 15 points. MV is now 18-0. New Palestine has a shot at finishing in a tie for second place with a Saturday afternoon game against Pendleton Heights. The Dragons are 10-8/4-2 after a 62-48 win over Lawrence Central on Wednesday in which Bethany Murrell tied her career high with 33 points. Greenfield-Central also posted a victory this week, beating Yorktown on Tuesday to improve to 9-9/3-4.
Now, let's turn our attention to the boys. We have two broadcasts this weekend:
Friday: Connersville at Mt. Vernon
Saturday: Greenfield-Central at Eastern Hancock
Both game broadcasts begin at 7:10 p.m. with Andrew Smith and Chris Lambert.

Saturday, we see the Hoosier Heritage Conference leaders in G-C face an EH team that's 11-3 and will have been resting for eight days since erupting for 92 points in a victory over Lapel. The Cougars have a HUGE game Friday night against Pendleton Heights, one of the teams one game back of the Cougars in the HHC standings. Rushville is the other one-loss team in the HHC, and G-C faces the Lions in late February.
Also Friday, New Palestine returns to conference play when it takes on Yorktown in its homecoming game.

Saturday's games
Greenfield-Central's Cougars just keep winning ... and keep atop the HHC standings. The Cougars knocked off Shelbyville 69-62 tonight to retain the top spot in the conference. G-C is now 4-0 in league play, 5-7 overall. Big game coming up Friday against Pendleton Heights (12-2, 4-1). Delta and Rushville both also remain on the conference docket for the Cougars. We will broadcast G-C's game next Saturday 1/29 against Eastern Hancock.
New Palestine bounced back from Friday's wild loss at TC with a nice 61-47 victory over Whiteland at home tonight. Dragons now have a 6-7 mark heading into Friday's conference game against Yorktown.
Mt. Vernon fell 57-54 to Knightstown in the Wigwam Classic on a last-second shot by K'town's Seth Apollos. MV falls to 3-9 with the loss, and will play next against Connersville Friday night. We will broadcast that game live on our network!

Friday night wrapup
We saw a solid performance from Mt. Vernon's girls tonight as they clinch at least a share of the HHC championship with a 48-37 victory over Greenfield-Central.
While the matchup featured two of the area's top junior guards, the inside players stole the show. Jessica Brown and LaRae Cruz did their damage on defense, holding the other team's leading scorer to five points each.
6-foot-2 junior Makenzi Reasor scored 18 points, including all eight of MV's points in the first quarter. Kayla Negley added 12 points and a boatload of steals. For G-C, Katie Peters scored 12 points and Kyra Tweedy hit three triples for nine points.
MV used a big first-half defensive run and forced 15 first-half turnovers to lead 20-10 at the break, and used a 10-point third quarter run to push the edge to 33-17. The lead would remain in double-digits from there.
MV is now 17-0 and 6-0 in the HHC. G-C is now 8-9 and 2-4 in HHC play.
