In our broadcast tonight, the New Palestine boys basketball team jumped out to an early double-digit
lead and posted its best defensive game in 13 years in a 63-19 victory
over Greenfield-Central.
The Dragons' victory was
their largest win margin since a 49-point win over Eastern Hancock 1999
and their best defensive effort since also holding Sheridan to 19 points
in 1998.
Freshman Brandon Jonas had a big night,
scoring a career-high 17 points, hitting 7-of-8 from the field. Junior
Michael Morris kick-started the Dragons in the second quarter, scoring
12 points in the frame en route to a 16-point night on 6-of-7 shooting.
Junior Justin Ikerd added three 3-pointers and 13 points. He hit two
early threes that gave the Dragons an 11-3 edge. NPHS would lead 19-3
after a quarter and 37-9 at the half.
The Dragons shot 54 percent from the floor, hitting 24-of-44. G-C's bright spot was its free throw shooting, as the Cougars hit 8-of-10 from the line in the game.
Now
3-1, the Dragons next play Friday 12/16 at home against Morristown,
beginning a three games in six days stretch that will continue Saturday
12/17 at Franklin Central.
G-C (0-6) next plays Friday at home against Yorktown.
Pendleton Heights 58, Mt. Vernon 49: Kellen Dunham had yet another strong game for the Arabians, totaling 32 points and six rebounds to lead the Arabians past MV.
The Marauders fell behind 18-2 early and battled back into the game. from there. Stephen Turner led the Marauders with 18 points. C.J. Coleman had 15.
MV (2-2) will next play Friday against Shelbyville.
Northeastern 68, Eastern Hancock 65: The Royals jumped out to an early 21-point lead, but Northeastern chipped it down to three by the end of the third and took the game in the fourth.
EH is now 2-2. The Royals are the one county boys team in action Saturday, hosting Sheridan.
Girls basketball
Greenfield-Central pulled away from a close game to beat New Palestine 51-45.
The game was close throughout, but G-C had eight offensive
rebounds in the fourth quarter and outboarded the Dragons 15-6 in the
final frame. That led to key second-chance points that eventually
allowed the Cougars to pull away.
Shelby Oldham hit a big 3-pointer that gave G-C its first six-point lead and set the tone for the latter stages of the game.
But the big key was Sara Jones. The junior post player had career highs with 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. LaRae Cruz added 17 points and eight rebounds, and Katie Peters had 12 points and eight boards for G-C.
Bethany Murrell had 18 points to lead the Dragons in scoring, to
go along with six rebounds. Lauren Tieman had nine points and nine
rebounds. Abby Seifert had seven points, eight rebounds and two
assists.
Both teams are back in action Saturday. The Cougars will host Chatard for a 6 p.m. JV tip. The Dragons next play Saturday at home against Shelbyville. The
varsity-only game will tip off at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday wrap: G-C swimmers split, NP swimmers sweep
The Greenfield-Central swim teams split a Thursday-night meet with Pendleton Heights, as the G-C boys won 132-51, while the G-C girls fell 101.5-82.5.
On the boys side, Bailey Willoughby was a double-individual event winner for G-C, winning the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Patrick Stutz, James Young and Austin Wilburn also won individual events.
In the girls meet, Carly Fernandes won the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, while Taylor Johnson won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
The Cougars next compete Tuesday at home against Mt. Vernon.
New Palestine sweeps Delta
The New Palestine swim teams beat Delta Thursday night at home.
The Dragon girls won 111-75, while the boys beat the Eagles 93-83.
Winners for the girls were Megan Prosser in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Olivia Ayer in the 50 freestyle, Claire Hornsby in the 100 butterfly, Katie Mustard in the 100 freestyle, Addison Virt in the 100 breaststroke and all three relay teams. Prosser, Virt, Hornsby and Ayer won the 200 medley relay; Emily Trimpe, Jordan Rogers, Karen Emminger and Ayer won the 200 free relay and Rogers, Mustard, Emminger and Trimpe won the 400 free relay.
Winners for the boys were Jake Greig in the 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle, Grant Gish in the 100 freestyle -- pacing a 1-2 finish with teammate Sam Baker -- and Jake Uppfalt in the 100 breaststroke. The Dragons also won the 200 free relay with Greig, Gish, Baker and Uppfalt, and the 400 free relay with Greig, Gish, Luke Steigerwalt and Baker.
"Both teams swam better tonight than in earlier meets," Maxwell said. "Their turns and finishes were much cleaner and more crisp.
"We're not where we need to be, especially early in our races, but we will use winter break for a big training boost to prepare for conference and sectional."
Other strong swims, according to coach Steve Maxwell, were Emily Bare in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke and her relay splits, Tricia Roberson in the medley relay and 200 frestyle, Lily Horn in the free relay, 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly and the swims of Katie Mustard, Nerea Capon and Natalie Berea. On the boys side, Maxwell cited Kelley Murphy, Todd Horn and Seth Eagleson's medley relay splits, Christian Dodd's IM performance, and the performances of Parker Horn, Arik Bonnett and Will Mitchell.

Slight New Palestine schedule change
New Palestine High School is announcing a slight change on Saturday's girls
basketball game vs. Shelbyville.
The junior varsity game has been canceled. The varsity game will tip off at
7:30 p.m.
The game will be the Dragons' third annual "Pink Night" as the Dragons will
wear pink to support cancer research. The Dragons will hold a silent auction
with the funds going to support cancer patients in our community. The Dragons
will wear pink uniforms for the occasion, and a silent auction will be held in
the auxiliary gymnasium.
Prior to that, the Dragons' boys and girls teams will play a doubleheader
against Greenfield-Central, starting with the girls game at 6 p.m. Friday,
followed by the boys game. It will be the home opener for the defending
sectional champion Dragon boys team. Coaches from both teams will coach the game
barefoot to raise awareness for Samaritan's Feet, an organization dedicated to
providing shoes for the 300 million people worldwide who go without shoes every
day.

Weekend hoops
Tuesday night marked the only mid-week girls game of the week, but there's plenty of hoops on tap for the weekend.
Friday night
Greenfield-Central at New Palestine (B/G doubleheader), 6 p.m. The Dragon and Cougar girls have played some great games over the last few years, including an overtime thriller last season. Meanwhile, the Dragon and Cougar boys played an OT game a year ago for the county title, and this is a game where the Cougars often play a strong game against their rivals. MV hung with 4A No. 2 Hamilton Southeastern for a half before the Royals pulled away. Dunham, a Butler recruit, has been putting up some huge scoring numbers.

It's also the back half of a big HHC weekend for the Dragons.

Tuesday wrap: Marauders fall to Anderson
Mt. Vernon ran into one of the state's highest-scoring teams in the Anderson Indians Tuesday evening.
The Marauders saw why. MV fell to the Indians 72-61, as Anderson scored 46 second-half points, including a 24-12 third-quarter run that gave the Indians a 50-41 edge going into the final eight minutes.
MV battled foul trouble for much of the second half, as well.
Ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, the Marauders are now 5-2. They will next play Saturday at home against Yorktown.
Swimming
The New Palestine swim teams continued a busy stretch of six meets in 13 days with a pair of three-way victories Tuesday at Beech Grove.
The Dragon girls scored 175 points to beat Beech Grove (50) and Tech (45). The Dragon boys outdistanced BG 147-135. Tech scored 34.
Winners for the Dragon girls included Emily Trimpe in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, swimming season-best times in each event, Erin Trimpe in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, Karen Emminger in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, Hannah Ayer in diving, Jordan Rogers in the 100 freestyle, Megan Prosser in the 100 backstroke with a season-best time, the 200 medley relay of Prosser, Addison Virt, Lily Horn and Olivia Ayer, the 200 freestyle relay of Emily Trimpe, Rogers, Emminger and Olivia Ayer, and the 400 freestyle relay of Rogers, Katie Mustard, Emminger and Emily Trimpe.

Three Dragons named IFCA All-State
Three members of New Palestine's HHC champion football team were
named to the Indiana Football Coaches Association All-State team this
week.
Quarterback Connor Simmons and WR/DBs Brandon Collins and Josh Penley were named to the IFCA Class 4A team. Collins was named to the team as a wide receiver, Penley as a defensive back.
For Collins and Penley, it's their second All-State selection and makes them consensus All-State picks. Both were also selected to the Associated Press All-State team, as selected by the state media, last week. The IFCA team is selected by the coaches. Greenfield-Central's Matt Dickerson was also selected to the AP All-State team last week.
Collins set the New Palestine single-season and career receptions record this season with 60 catches, 923 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. His 923 yards comprise the biggest season ever by a New Palestine receiver, and his 60 season catches and 76 career catches are both school records. Collins is also second on New Palestine's career receiving yardage list behind 1993 graduate Jay Ehle with 1,141 career yards.
He also had six interceptions, an interception return for a touchdown and two fumble recoveries as a defensive back. On offense, Penley had 883 receiving yards and 17 receiving touchdowns this season, setting the school touchdown receptions record with 17 for the season and 20 for his career.
Simmons also rewrote the New Palestine football record book, completing 174 passes for for 2,795 yards and 35 touchdowns this year. He broke the New Palestine single-season and career records for completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns, all of which had previously been held by either Mark Shepler since 1987 or Matt Rodgers since 1993. He holds the career records for passing yards (3,289), completions (212) and passing touchdowns (39). He completed 64 percent of his passes this season and ranked among the state leaders in passing yards and touchdowns this season. He also twice broke the single-game passing touchdowns record with five TD passes.
Together, they helped lead the Dragons to a 10-1 record, a second straight Hoosier Heritage Conference championship, an HHC-record 20-game winning streak in conference games, the No. 1 ranking in the AP Class 4A poll at the end of the season and the school's first unbeaten regular season since 1988.
