Lots of basketball today: seven of the eight Hancock County basketball teams in action today, and six came away successful, including Hoosier Heritage Conference victories for the G-C, NP and MV girls and the NP boys. Eastern Hancock had a sweep of the day, too.
First, let's look at the evening boys games:
New Palestine 63, Rushville 51: The Dragons get a big victory in one of the HHC's toughest road venues. NP jumped ahead 20-3 after a quarter and never trailed from there, leading 34-21 at half and 51-40 after three.
Michael Morris scored 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting for the Dragons and added eight rebounds. Reid Clark had a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards. Josh Penley had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists. Justin Ikerd added nine points. Brandon Collins grabbed seven rebounds for the Dragons.
NP is now 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. The Dragons next play Friday against Greenfield-Central in the second half of a boy/girl doubleheader. Our LIVE HancockCountySports.com broadcast will begin at 5:40 p.m.
Eastern Hancock 61, Southwestern (Shelby) 49: The Royals won their second straight game with a road victory against the Spartans -- a team in EH's future conference, the Mid-Hoosier. Now 2-1, the Royals will next play at home Friday against Northeastern.
Southport 55, Greenfield-Central 29: The Cardinals, led by ex-Cougar Wes Peek, won in Cougar Gymnasium. Mason Irbe and Travis Dougherty each scored seven points to lead G-C. Zach Batton added five. Listen to the Cougar boys and girls next Friday at New Palestine, live on HancockCountySports.com!
Mt. Vernon was idle and will next play Friday at Pendleton Heights.
The four girls teams were all perfect
Mt. Vernon 44, Pendleton Heights 39: In the game we broadcast on HancockCountySports.com, the Marauders won a nip-and-tuck battle to improve to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in HHC play.
Jessica Brown scored 18 points and Makenzi Reasor added 13 points to lead the Marauders. Kenzie Gustin had 21 for PH.
MV's next game will be Tuesday against Anderson.
Greenfield-Central 58, Rushville 54: The Cougars won their fourth straight game with a big road victory at Rushville. G-C outscored the Lions 16-6 in the third quarter to take a 44-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Senior LaRae Cruz scored 17 points to lead G-C. Shelby Oldham added 15 points and Sara Jones scored nine.
The Cougars are now 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in HHC play. They will meet New Palestine at 6 p.m. Friday. Listen to the broadcast on HancockCountySports.com.
New Palestine 60, Delta 48: The Dragons dominated the glass to win their HHC opener against a previously-unbeaten Eagles team. NP outrebounded Delta 55-21 and grabbed 28 offensive rebounds in the victory.
Bethany Murrell scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Dragons with a double-double. Lauren Tieman had 12 rebounds and Abby Seifert 11 boards. Emily Curry added nine of her 11 points in the first half.
NP held a hot-shooting Delta team that had been averaging 70 points per game to below 40 percent shooting on the day.

Eastern Hancock 48, Union County 44: The Royals improved to 5-1 on the season with the close victory. EH led 25-21 at half, saw Union County close it to 37-36 at the end of three before EH pulled away.
Kristen Eischen led the Royals with 21 points, nine rebounds, two blocked shots and four steals. Alora Marshall had eight points and seven boards. Hannah Boaz hit a couple of big shots down the stretch to score seven. Kaytlin Eastes added six points.
EH next plays Tuesday at Lapel.
Wrestling
Dragons go 4-1 at New Castle 6-way: New Palestine went 4-1 at the New Castle 6-way, with only a narrow loss to Pendleton Heights a blemish on the perfect record. NP is now 10-1 on the season. Included in the Dragons' victories were wins over perennial powers New Castle and Bellmont.

Friday wrap: Marauders, Cougars fall at home
Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central both fell at home to strong programs Friday night, seeing some outstanding individual performances.
In the game we broadcast, 4A No. 2 Hamilton Southeastern pulled away to beat Mt. Vernon 67-39 in a game that was pretty close for a half. HSE's Zak Irvin led a blistering start in which the Royals scored 23 first-quarter points and built a double-digit lead, but MV's C.J. Coleman scored eight in the second quarter and closed the Royals' lead to 28-22 before HSE scored the quarter's final six points.
But that's where Gary Harris, one of the top players in the nation, stepped in. He scored nine of his 17 points in the third quarter -- including a personal seven-point run that included a dunk, a jumper, a steal and a 3-pointer that quickly built the Royals' lead to 44-26. HSE would use a relentless defense to extend it from there.
The Royals are strong and deep, putting together an attack with four double-figure scorers for the second straight game. Harris, who will be playing for Michigan State next year, scored 17. Irvin -- a 6-7 junior guard headed to Michigan -- had a game-high 18. Guard Jacobby Bledsoe scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers. HSE's Paul Furlin also hit double-figures.
Coleman led MV with 15 points. Stephen Turner scored 13 for the Marauders, including eight in the first quarter.
MV next plays next Friday against Pendleton Heights on the road. MV is now 2-1 on the year.
Meanwhile, Greenfield-Central fell to New Castle 62-35. The Cougars did put forth their highest point total of the year in the loss, which dropped them to 0-4.

Thursday wrap: Dragon, Cougar wrestlers win
The New Palestine wrestling team was letter-perfect in an 84-0 victory over Whiteland.
Besides the two forfeits, every one of the 12 matches the Dragons
wrestled was won by fall, and none extended into the third period.
The fastest fall came in the evening's third match, as senior Connor Robinson recorded a pin in 22 seconds at 160. Rylan McCarty had a 27-second fall at 113, Jack Buchanan had a 33-second pin at 220 and Logan Hunt a 36-second fall at 145. Nick Ulrey (152) had the other first-period fall, in 52 seconds.
Other Dragon winners were Taylor Fee (120), Gordon Wagner (126), Max Ingle (132), Robbie Elsea (138), Brian Wagner (170), Cameron Denney (195) and Willie Bryan (285). Billy Emmons (106) and Noah Grable (182) both received forfeits.
The Dragons are now 6-0 heading into Saturday's New Castle 6-way.
The Dragon JV also won 24-12.
Greenfield-Central 43, Franklin Central 21: The Cougars remained unbeaten with a road victory. G-C is now 7-0 on the season.
The big victory came at 132, where the Cougars' Cody Cecil won a 6-3 decision against the state's seventh-ranked wrestler in his weight class. Other winners for G-C were Dustin Mayhugh (145), Dezmen McGinley (170), Ian Early (195) and Tyler Beeson (285), all by fall. Josh Farrell won a 17-6 major decision at 138. Other winners by decision were Taylor Wright (106), Sam Locke (126), Austin Rose (152) and Austin Gearlds (220).
The Cougars next wrestle Dec. 10 at the Perry Meridian duals.
G-C won the JV match 76-22.

G-C's boys won 109-76. Cougar winners were Erik Kile in the 200 freestyle, Patrick Stutz in the 200 IM, Nathan Graber in diving and the 200 free relay of McCormick, Wilburn, Young and Kile.
G-C's girls posted a 93-92 victory. Carly Fernandes and Taylor Johnson were triple-winners. Fernandes won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Johnson the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. They also won the 200 medley relay (Fernandes, Weldon, Johnson, Smith). Jeneal Hunt won diving.
The Cougars next compete Nov. 8 against Pendleton Heights.
New Palestine splits with Yorktown: The Dragon boys beat Yorktown 106-72 in their season opener. The NPHS girls fell 103-83.
On the boys side, senior Jake Greig was as four-event winner, taking the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and joining sophomore Grant Gish, senior Sam Baker and senior Klay Simmons on the 200 and 400 free relays.
Gish also won the 100 backstroke. Simmons won the 200 freestyle. Baker took the 200 IM. Other winners for the Dragons were junior Luke Steigerwalt (100 butterfly) and senior Jake Uppfalt (100 breaststroke).
On the girls side, junior Emily Trimpe won the 50 freestyle and freshman Erin Trimpe won the 500 freestyle. The 200 free relay of Emily Trimpe and seniors Jordan Rogers, Karen Emminger and Olivia Ayer also were winners.
NP coach Steve Maxwell also cited the performances of Todd Horn on the anchor leg of the 200 medley relay, which finished second, and his fourth-place finish in the 50 free, as the Dragons went 1-2-4 in that event. He said Erin Trimpe in the 500 free, Christian Dodd in the anchor of the boys 200 free relay that finished second and sealed a 1-2 finishin that event, and his fifth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, and the swim of Rebecca Digney in the 100 butterfly. Maxwell noted the team has been training hard and will be training throughout the next several meets to prepare for "championship season" in January.

New Palestine WR/DB Josh Penley and Greenfield-Central RB/DB Matt Dickerson were announced as a member of the Associated
Press Class 4A All-State team, both as defensive backs.In addition, New Palestine WR Brandon Collins was an All-State wide receiver.
Penley had a tremendous senior year, with 883 receiving yards and 17 receiving touchdowns this season. He also had six interceptions, an interception return for a touchdown and two fumble recoveries as a defensive back, helping lead the Dragons to a 10-1 record, a second straight Hoosier Heritage Conference championship and the No. 1 ranking in the Class 4A poll at the end of the season. He is the Dragons' all-time receiving touchdowns leader. Penley was also named honorable mention at WR.
Collins also had a big senior year, with 60 catches, 923 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He set New Palestine's single-season and career receptions records and the single-season receiving yards record.
Dickerson had four blocked kicks, five interceptions -- three of which he returned for touchdowns. He also had three kick returns for TDs. On offense, Dickerson accounted for 547 yards of total offense and four touchdowns.

- DB Dalton Korlowicz: 94 tackles, 4 TFL, 2 forced fumbles
EH girls fall to Frankton
Eastern Hancock's girls fell 56-43 to Frankton on the road Wednesday, dropping the Royals' record to 4-1.
Alora Marshall had 14 points and six rebounds for the Royals. Peyton Neisler added 12 points. Kristen Eischen had seven rebounds and Lana Marshall added six.
The Royals return home Saturday for a 1:30 contest against Union County.

SW: Cougars swim well at Noblesville
Greenfield-Central's boys swim team fell to Noblesville 98-88 Tuesday night. G-C's boys swam well against one of the top teams in the state, with the team score lead changing hands several times.
Cougar winners were Jon McCormick (200 IM), Austin Wilburn (50 freestyle), James Young (100 butterfly) and the 200 free relay of Stutz, Young, Cummings and Dickerson -- leading a 1-2 finish.
The G-C girls fell 139-44 to Noblesville. Carly Fernandes led G-C with a victory in the 100 backstroke.
