Saturday hoops wrap: EH wins, NP falls at buzzer
It was a big night for the Eastern Hancock Royals as they pulled away to a 74-35 victory over Tri tonight on the road.
The Royals won their second straight game -- and the second in which they held an opponent to 35 points -- to improve to 9-7 on the year.
EH's next game is at home Thursday against Triton Central. You can listen to the game live at HancockCountySports.com!
Mooresville 65, New Palestine 63: In one of the area's marquee games tonight, the Dragons and Pioneers locked horns in a tussle that was decided at the buzzer.
NP trailed by double-digits after a quarter, and rallied from a 37-25 halftime deficit to cut the Pioneers' lead to two by the late stages of the third quarter. But the Pioneers managed to maintain the lead until the closing seconds. Trailing by eight in the final minute, NP hit a 3-pointer, forced a turnover, got a layup to Brandon Jonas to cut the deficit to three, then saw Mooresville miss both halves of a two-shot foul.
Ikerd drilled a 3 out of the left wing to tie the game with 7.3 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Mooresville's Brandon Smalling threw up a 3-pointer, but drew contact and was awarded a 3-shot foul. He hit the first and third shots with no time on the clock to give the Pioneers the victory.
Josh Penley scored 16 points to lead the Dragons, and added six assists. Michael Morris recorded his third double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 6-of-11 from the floor. Ikerd hit four second-half 3-pointers for 12 points, while Reid Clark had 11 points and six boards. Jonas added six points.
Mooresville was led by Smalling's 21 points, leading four Pioneers in double-figures.
NP shot 42 percent from the floor, but just 13-of-24 from the line. Mooresville hit 50 percent of its shots, and was 11-of-17 from the stripe.
NP fell to 11-5 with the loss. Mooresville is now 11-3. The Dragons next play Thursday at Franklin.
Greenwood 60, Greenfield-Central 37: Mason Irbe scored 11 points, Jordan Keener and Zach Batton six to lead the Cougars in a loss on the road.
The Woodmen had a double-digit lead at the half and extended it after the break. G-C is now 1-15 on the year and next plays Thursday against Knightstown.
Mt. Vernon was idle tonight, but plays Warren Central on Monday at home. You can listen to the game LIVE at HancockCountySports.com!

Friday wrap: Dragons win
Thanks for listening tonight as we broadcast 2 games -- NP vs. Shelbyville and MV vs. North Central. Both games featured second-half comebacks, a good one for the Dragons and a not-so-good result for the Marauders.
NP beat Shelbyville 72-51, but the Dragons trailed for much of the first half. Michael Morris led the Dragons with 23 points, including 14 in the second half and eight in a 10-0 run that opened the half and gave NP a 44-36 lead. Reid Clark had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, with seven in the third quarter. Josh Penley had 14 points, including five in the final minute of the first half that helped rally NP back from a 36-27 deficit. Penley's banked-in off-balance shot from a step inside half-court gave NP a big momentum boost for the second half, and the Dragons pulled away from there. They had several big runs, including 10-0 to start the third and 12-3 to start the fourth. NP is now 11-4/4-2.
In the other boys game, Greenfield-Central fell to Delta 66-39. Mason Irbe scored 12 points and Jordan Keener nine for the Cougars, who fell to 1-14 on the year and 1-5 in HHC play.
Pendleton Heights also clinched the HHC title with a victory over Yorktown. It's the Arabians' second straight title -- they shared it with Rushville last seaosn.
In girls basketball, Mt. Vernon led for much of the game, but eventually fell to North Central 42-38. Jessica Brown had 11 points in her final home game as a Marauder. Rachel Houck added nine. Anna Olson, Makenzi Reasor and Kelsie Owens were also all celebrated on Senior Night. MV is now 17-5, with two losses to teams who have been top-5 4A teams in the final week by a total of six points. The Marauders will likely open the state tournament ranked No. 2 or No. 3 in the 3A poll. They will face Brebeuf at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Arlington.
Eastern Hancock had a great experience at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, but the Royals fell to Triton Central 44-26. EH fell behind 25-11 at halftime. The Royals finish the regular season 12-8, and open sectional play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Hagerstown at Cambridge City Lincoln.

Weekend hoops
Friday night is going to be an exciting one in Hancock County. Four games, involving all four schools, with two being boys games and two being girls games.
It touches off an odd week of hoops, that will include a boys or a girls county game every night (except, of course, Sunday and next Wednesday) from tonight through the end of next weekend, and includes a Monday night and Saturday-afternoon boys game.
We'll also do something exciting -- split up our broadcast crew. Chris Lambert and Greg Elkins are headed to Mt. Vernon to call the Marauders' final girls game of the year against North Central. Andrew Smith will broadcast the New Palestine-Shelbyville boys game, a rematch of last year's sectional final. So, you have a choice of which game to listen to on Friday night!
FRIDAY
Boys games
Shelbyville (0-14) at New Palestine (10-4): Dragons are looking to get back on track after dropping three of their last four in January. Michael Morris had a strong game last time out vs. Yorktown, but the rest of the team struggled to shoot. Morris is one of the HHC's top scorers and is the top free throw shooter. Shelby had to replace all five starters from last year and doesn't have a senior in the starting five. Both teams like to push the ball, so expect a lot of points. Listen LIVE link here
Greenfield-Central (1-13) at Delta (9-6): Both teams have identical 1-4 HHC records, so this game will be big for placement in the conference. The Cougars had a good showing against Shelbyville in a victory two weeks ago, then struggled last week offensively in losses to Pendleton Heights and Eastern Hancock. Jordan Keener was a bright spot against EH, scoring 11 points.
Girls games
North Central (15-5) at 3A #1 Mt. Vernon (17-4): The Marauders are looking to bounce back from a tough 51-49 loss to 4A #4 Fort Wayne South on Tuesday, one in which MV came back from a double-digit deficit to tie the game in the late stages. It will be Senior Night for Makenzi Reasor, Jessica Brown, Anna Olson and Kelsie Owens, one of the most decorated classes in MV history. This game is also a rematch of MV's lone regular-season loss from a year ago. North Central is loaded, but recently snapped a three-game skid (against 4A powers Decatur Central, Lawrence North and Warren Central) with a victory over Kokomo on Tuesday. Listen LIVE link here
Eastern Hancock (12-7) vs. Triton Central (18-1), 5:30 p.m. at Bankers Life Fieldhouse: The Royals get to play downtown as the first part of a tripleheader. EH hits the tough part of its schedule at the end of the year, and this will be a good preparation for the first sectional game against 18-2 Hagerstown on Tuesday night. EH is a young team, with every rotation player being an underclassmen and most being either freshmen or sophomores, and has made huge strides this year. TC has been going through a banner year and is poised for a deep tourney run, led by senior guard Emily Alfrey and two solid freshmen in Natalie Stephenson and Samantha Dewey. Both teams will enjoy the game.
SATURDAY
Boys games
Mooresville (10-2) at New Palestine (10-4): Both teams will finish the weekend after playing conference foes the night before. The Pioneers have been strong under coach Bob Carter, led by senior Justin Kenney. This game is NP's Coaches vs. Cancer night, and includes a raffle that has -- among other things -- the rim broken by Boomer during the Dragons' game vs. Triton Central on Jan. 20.
Greenfield-Central (1-13) at Greenwood (1-13): A pair of teams looking to get on track at the end of the season meet up in Greenwood. Like NP-Mooresville, this HHC-Mid-State matchup will feature teams who had played a conference game the night before.

College commitments
New Palestine released the following college commitments today. Any others we get, we will pass along:
4 New Palestine athletes have recently made college commitments and either have signed or will soon sign National Letters of Intent.

DISMAN, COLLINS MAKE
COMMITMENTS
Several members of New
Palestine’s 11-1 football team are in the process of making commitments to play
college football. Two have recently committed to NCAA Division I Football
Championship Series colleges – lineman Mitch Disman (Indiana State) and wide receiver Brandon Collins (Butler).
“We
are proud of Mitch and Brandon as student athletes. They have pursued high goals
on and off the field. We are excited to see them continue playing football in
college while pursuing their degrees,” New Palestine coach Tim Able said.
Disman has signed a national
letter of intent to play at Indiana State. The Sycamores are a member of the
Missouri Valley Conference and compete at the NCAA Div. I Football Championship
Series level (formerly Div. I-AA). Disman stands 6-foot-6, 255 pounds and played
both offensive and defensive lines for three years for a Dragon team that has
won 20 consecutive Hoosier Heritage Conference games and back-to-back HHC
titles.
He was a key cog in an offense
that shattered the school’s passing records this season. On defense, he had 51
tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and three sacks in 2011. New Palestine went 30-6 in his
three years as a starter and won one sectional and two conference titles. Disman
is a two-time All-HHC and All-Hancock County performer. Mitch plans to major in
accounting at ISU, where he will play for coach Trent Miles.
“Mitch
was a two time first team all-HHC player the Dragons,” Able said. “Mitch Disman
was our blindside tackle who protected our quarterback’s backside. He possessed
a unique blend of athletic abilities with his 6-foot-6 frame and outstanding
feet. With his versatility, Mitch could end up playing on the defensive or
offensive side of the ball in college.
He has to put on some weight to match the size of college linemen but
that will be no problem.”
Wide receiver Brandon Collins has
committed to play for the Butler Bulldogs. Butler is also a member of the Div. I FCS, but
is a non-scholarship program and competes in the Pioneer Football League.
Collins broke many of the school’s existing receiving records in a stellar
senior season, setting the school’s single-season and career receptions
records.
Collins set single-season records
with 60 catches and 923 yards. He also had 10 touchdown receptions this year,
second-most in school history to teammate Josh Penley. He also set a career
record with 76 total catches, and his 1,141 career yards are second in New
Palestine history. Collins is an All-HHC and All-Hancock County performer. Collins is also a key
player on the Dragons’ basketball team, which won a sectional championship in
2011. He was also named to both the Associated Press and Indiana Football
Coaches Association All-State teams as a senior. He will play for coach Jeff
Voris at Butler.
“Brandon was a pivotal
player in our passing game, pass defense and special teams,” Able said. “He was
named first team all HHC and 1st team 4A IFCA All
State. Brandon possessed great
leadership qualities that enhanced his value to our team’s success.”
NAPARIU COMMITS TO MARYLAND
New Palestine High
School senior Sonya Napariu has committed to compete in track
and field at the University of Maryland.
Napariu will compete for the Terrapins
and coach Andrew Valmon in 2012-13.
Competing in the shot put and discus,
Napariu has had a decorated career at NPHS, competing in the 2012 Indiana High
School Athletic Association State Finals in the discus. She is the defending
sectional, Hoosier Heritage Conference and Hancock County champion in both
events, and helped lead the New Palestine team to back-to-back HHC and Hancock
County championships. Sonya is also the school recordholder at NPHS in both
events.
She also won the shot put event at the
Midwest Meet of Champions in 2012.
Sonya has a 3.8 grade point average.
Sonya plans to major in business at
Maryland
SHEPLER-TUCKER TO PLAY SOCCER AT IUPUI
New Palestine High
School senior Kalli Shepler-Tucker has committed to play soccer at IUPUI.
A
versatile player, Shepler-Tucker scored 11 goals and had 11 assists for
the Dragons this past season, leading them to a 17-1-3 record and a
spot in the regional championship game, the team's first regional game
victory in school history.
During her career, the Dragons won four sectional championships and three Hoosier Heritage Conference championships.
As a senior, Shepler-Tucker had three multi-goal games and also had two three-assist games.
