It was a big night for the Eastern Hancock Royals as they pulled away to a 74-35 victory over Tri tonight on the road.
The Royals won their second straight game -- and the second in which they held an opponent to 35 points -- to improve to 9-7 on the year.

Mooresville 65, New Palestine 63: In one of the area's marquee games tonight, the Dragons and Pioneers locked horns in a tussle that was decided at the buzzer.
NP trailed by double-digits after a quarter, and rallied from a 37-25 halftime deficit to cut the Pioneers' lead to two by the late stages of the third quarter. But the Pioneers managed to maintain the lead until the closing seconds. Trailing by eight in the final minute, NP hit a 3-pointer, forced a turnover, got a layup to Brandon Jonas to cut the deficit to three, then saw Mooresville miss both halves of a two-shot foul.
Ikerd drilled a 3 out of the left wing to tie the game with 7.3 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Mooresville's Brandon Smalling threw up a 3-pointer, but drew contact and was awarded a 3-shot foul. He hit the first and third shots with no time on the clock to give the Pioneers the victory.
Josh Penley scored 16 points to lead the Dragons, and added six assists. Michael Morris recorded his third double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 6-of-11 from the floor. Ikerd hit four second-half 3-pointers for 12 points, while Reid Clark had 11 points and six boards. Jonas added six points.
Mooresville was led by Smalling's 21 points, leading four Pioneers in double-figures.
NP shot 42 percent from the floor, but just 13-of-24 from the line. Mooresville hit 50 percent of its shots, and was 11-of-17 from the stripe.
NP fell to 11-5 with the loss. Mooresville is now 11-3. The Dragons next play Thursday at Franklin.
Greenwood 60, Greenfield-Central 37: Mason Irbe scored 11 points, Jordan Keener and Zach Batton six to lead the Cougars in a loss on the road.
The Woodmen had a double-digit lead at the half and extended it after the break. G-C is now 1-15 on the year and next plays Thursday against Knightstown.

Weekend hoops
Friday night is going to be an exciting one in Hancock County. Four games, involving all four schools, with two being boys games and two being girls games.
It touches off an odd week of hoops, that will include a boys or a girls county game every night (except, of course, Sunday and next Wednesday) from tonight through the end of next weekend, and includes a Monday night and Saturday-afternoon boys game.
We'll also do something exciting -- split up our broadcast crew. Chris Lambert and Greg Elkins are headed to Mt. Vernon to call the Marauders' final girls game of the year against North Central. Andrew Smith will broadcast the New Palestine-Shelbyville boys game, a rematch of last year's sectional final. So, you have a choice of which game to listen to on Friday night!
FRIDAY
Boys games
Shelbyville (0-14) at New Palestine (10-4): Dragons are looking to get back on track after dropping three of their last four in January. Michael Morris had a strong game last time out vs. Yorktown, but the rest of the team struggled to shoot. Morris is one of the HHC's top scorers and is the top free throw shooter. Shelby had to replace all five starters from last year and doesn't have a senior in the starting five. Both teams like to push the ball, so expect a lot of points. Listen LIVE link here
Greenfield-Central (1-13) at Delta (9-6): Both teams have identical 1-4 HHC records, so this game will be big for placement in the conference. The Cougars had a good showing against Shelbyville in a victory two weeks ago, then struggled last week offensively in losses to Pendleton Heights and Eastern Hancock. Jordan Keener was a bright spot against EH, scoring 11 points.
Girls games
North Central (15-5) at 3A #1 Mt. Vernon (17-4): The Marauders are looking to bounce back from a tough 51-49 loss to 4A #4 Fort Wayne South on Tuesday, one in which MV came back from a double-digit deficit to tie the game in the late stages. It will be Senior Night for Makenzi Reasor, Jessica Brown, Anna Olson and Kelsie Owens, one of the most decorated classes in MV history. This game is also a rematch of MV's lone regular-season loss from a year ago. North Central is loaded, but recently snapped a three-game skid (against 4A powers Decatur Central, Lawrence North and Warren Central) with a victory over Kokomo on Tuesday. Listen LIVE link here
Eastern Hancock (12-7) vs. Triton Central (18-1), 5:30 p.m. at Bankers Life Fieldhouse: The Royals get to play downtown as the first part of a tripleheader. EH hits the tough part of its schedule at the end of the year, and this will be a good preparation for the first sectional game against 18-2 Hagerstown on Tuesday night. EH is a young team, with every rotation player being an underclassmen and most being either freshmen or sophomores, and has made huge strides this year. TC has been going through a banner year and is poised for a deep tourney run, led by senior guard Emily Alfrey and two solid freshmen in Natalie Stephenson and Samantha Dewey. Both teams will enjoy the game.
SATURDAY
Boys games
Mooresville (10-2) at New Palestine (10-4): Both teams will finish the weekend after playing conference foes the night before. The Pioneers have been strong under coach Bob Carter, led by senior Justin Kenney. This game is NP's Coaches vs. Cancer night, and includes a raffle that has -- among other things -- the rim broken by Boomer during the Dragons' game vs. Triton Central on Jan. 20.
Greenfield-Central (1-13) at Greenwood (1-13): A pair of teams looking to get on track at the end of the season meet up in Greenwood. Like NP-Mooresville, this HHC-Mid-State matchup will feature teams who had played a conference game the night before.

Thursday wrap: G-C falls to Greenwood
Greenfield-Central's girls basketball team fell to Greenwood on Senior Night Thursday night by a 62-46 score.
The Woodmen used a 19-8 second quarter to build a 36-20 halftime lead. LaRae Cruz led the Cougars with 19 points, while Emily Koers added 11. Katie Peters and Shelby Davis scored six points each for G-C.
Deauna Evans led Greenwood with 16 points.
The Cougars finish the regular season 13-7 and will host Pendleton Heights at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the opening round of the Greenfield-Central sectional.

New Palestine falls 62-50
New Palestine's girls basketball team used some timely 3-point shooting to build an early 15-point lead, but Greenwood's depth and balance proved too much as the ninth-ranked Woodmen pulled away to a 62-50 victory over the Dragons Tuesday at Greenwood.
NP pulled ahead to leads of 6-0, 12-2 and then used an 11-0 run to start the second quarter that gave the Dragons a 23-8 lead. Kyleigh Smock, Taylor Espich and Bethany Murrell all drained 3-pointers in the run.
But Greenwood finished the half on a 15-2 run that cut the Dragon edge to 25-23 at halftime -- capped by a 3-pointer from Alexis Swearingen at the buzzer -- and then post player Deauna Evans hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the second half to give the Woodmen their first lead at 26-25.
After the lead changed hands several times in the third, Greenwood pulled away in the fourth. It was 48-45 when junior Kelsie Ratliff hit her third 3-pointer of the game, giving Greenwood a six-point edge. Deauna Evans scored on the next possession, then a turnover and Greenwood milked a minute of clock before the Dragons had to foul and the Woodmen put things away at the line, hitting 9-of-10 free throws in the final 1:41.
Greenwood had four players in double-figures, led by Ratliff's 19 points. Deauna Evans had 12 points, while senior Kailey Evans had 10 points, six boards and five steals. Point guard Alexis Swearingen had 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
Murrell led the Dragons with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Kyleigh Smock had eight points. Abby Seifert added seven points and nine rebounds.
The Dragons outrebounded Greenwood 35-26, but the Woodmen committed just nine turnovers to NP's 21, and Greenwood held a 28-6 advantage in points off turnovers, including 13 points off seven NP miscues in the fourth quarter, during which Greenwood outscored NP 24-13.

Swimming
Cougars fall to Center Grove: Greenfield-Central's boys swim team was close against one of the state's powers, but fell 99-81 in a dual meet.
G-C winners were Patrick Stutz in the 50 free, Jon McCormick in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 and 400 free relays of Stutz, Austin Wilburn, James Young and Cody Wilburn.
CG also won the girls meet 137-48.
The Cougars join their conference brethren in the HHC meet this weekend at New Palestine. Diving gets underway on Thursday, with the swimming events on Saturday.
Gymnastics
Dragons 3rd in opener: The New Palestine gymnastics team opened its season by placing third in a three-way meet. New Castle won with 97.625 points, Connersville had 97.475 and the Dragons 78.5.

The Dragons' top placers were Ciarra Hough, who finished fifth on floor and
balance beam, and Julie Hilton, who was sixth on vault. The Dragons were
shorthanded Tuesday, competing without four gymnasts who were unavailable due to
various reasons.
"We had several girls who are showing some potential to be a key gymnast
for the team," NP coach Jenny Musselman said.
"I have very high expectations for this season as well as the team.
If we can keep everyone healthy and eligible we will have a great shot at
winning sectionals."

This week's polls
Three of the four basketball polls are out this week, and there are a few things of note:
In the ICGSA girls poll, Mt. Vernon remains No. 2 in Class 3A with a 13-3 record, behind Norwell (13-1). The Marauders vaulted NorthWood (13-1).
In the IBCA girls poll, which does not rank teams regarding for class, MV is No. 18. Unbeaten Penn, HSE and Merillville take the top three spots.
In the IBCA boys poll, New Palestine is receiving votes.
Other notables:
ICGSA girls: Greenwood (which will host New Palestine Tuesday in a game broadcast by HancockCountySports.com) fell from No. 4 to No. 9 in 4A after a loss to Whiteland last week.
