Saturday roundup

In girls basketball, Whiteland knocked off Greenfield-Central 44-36. The Warriors finish the regular season 17-2, while G-C finishes with a 9-10 mark. The Cougars open sectional play Friday against either Anderson or Muncie Central at 6 p.m. Eastern Hancock fell to Triton Central 76-23. The Royals open sectional play against rival Knightstown.

In boys basketball, the scheduled games for Mt. Vernon (at Warren Central), Eastern Hancock (vs. Tri) and New Palestine (at Mooresville) were all postponed.

In wrestling, seven of the 13 Hancock County competitors moves on to next week's New Castle semistate. Greenfield-Central sophomore Josh Farrell made himself a regional champion, knocking off Franklin Central's Andrice Martin in the 119-pound final for the second straight week, and earning himself an all-important first-round bye in next week's New Castle semistate. Farrell will join teammates Dezman McGinley (160) and Ian Early (171), who both finished third. Farrell is now 34-2, McGinley 34-4 -- with a sectional championship last week -- and Early is 35-6.

New Palestine also advanced three wrestlers to semistate, all sophomores who finished third. Taylor Fee improved to 33-6 at 112, Gordon Wagner moved on at 125 (29-9) and Robbie Elsea advanced at 130 (34-7). All will have to win two matches -- one against a regional runner-up, one against a regional champ -- to advance out of the semistate next week.

MV's Sam Balbach will move on at 215 as a regional runner-up. Balbach, now 36-2, fell to Perry Meridian's Logan Cooper in the finals.

In girls swimming, Mt. Vernon finished second and New Palestine third in the NP sectional today. Connersville won the title with 289 points. MV had 212, NP 207. Greenfield-Central was fifth with 184 points.

NP sophomore Emily Trimpe advanced to the State Finals in three events. She won the 50 freestyle in 24.93 seconds, and also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.86. Trimpe also joined Katie Prosser, Jordan Rogers and Karen Emminger to win the 200 free relay in 1:43.91.

MV sophomore Lauren Reifel was the sectional champ in diving with 394.35 points. She will advance to the diving regional next week.

Sectional runners-up: G-C's 200 medley relay team of Carly Fernandes, Cassidy Creemer, Taylor Johnson and Caroline Baggott, NP's Prosser in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, G-C's Baggott in the 200 IM, Fernandes in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke and Johnson in the 100 butterfly. NP's 400 free relay team of Prosser, Jordan Rogers, Katie Mustard and Trimpe also finished second.

Makeups & more

Tonight, athletes from all four Hancock County schools converge on New Palestine for the swim sectional prelims.

But that's about the only action going on in the area tonight. Crews at NPHS were working hard all afternoon to clear the parking lot to make it passable for fans attending.

However, all of the night's basketball games are off.

G-C vs. Delta -- no reschedule date yet, they're looking at a date in late February.
EH vs. Tri -- will be played Saturday night, 6 p.m. JV tipoff
NP at Shelbyville -- no reschedule date yet

Also, on Saturday, Greenfield-Central's girls will host Whiteland at 6 p.m., and the boys will host Greenwood immediately following. The JV games will take place in the G-C fieldhouse -- boys first, then girls.

We will announce reschedule dates when they are made available to us.

Weather report

New Palestine, Greenfield-Central and Eastern Hancock Schools have already canceled classes for Friday, which means that all Hancock County boys basketball games for Friday night will be postponed.

Initially on the docket were NP @ Shelbyville, Delta @ G-C and Tri @ EH.

Therefore, we will not have a broadcast Friday night. Keep posted to HancockCountySports.com for a potential additional replacement broadcast later in February.

More closings/weather-affected games

All four Hancock County schools had season finale girls basketball games scheduled Thursday.

All four will likely be canceled after school was called in all four districts for Thursday. It would affect New Palestine @ Plainfield, Shenandoah @ Mt. Vernon, Triton Central @ Eastern Hancock and Greenfield-Central @ Greenwood.

Everything is on for Friday as of now, although our broadcast time will shift briefly. We will still broadcast New Palestine vs. Shelbyville boys, but will probably go on the air at approximately 7:30 p.m. instead of the previously-advertised 7:10 p.m., as Shelby's girls team will play Franklin at 6 p.m. prior to the tipoff of the boys game. We will go on when the girls game ends.

Also Friday, Greenfield-Central hosts Delta and Eastern Hancock hosts Tri. Mt. Vernon is off until Saturday, when it will face Warren Central on the road. NP (at Mooresville) and G-C (vs. Greenwood) also have Saturday's games.

Listen to the NP-Shelby game here, 7:30 p.m. Friday

School's out

... throughout the county (and region) today, and closings are starting to roll in for Wednesday.

Needless to say, all athletic events for the next couple of days will be cancelled/postponed.

Enrollment numbers out

The IHSAA has released its enrollment numbers, and there will be some interesting changes ahead.

First of all, it appears New Palestine will move up to Class 4A in basketball/volleyball/baseball/softball, while Greenfield-Central will remain 4A. Mt. Vernon, which has a reported enrollment of 15 fewer students than NP, will remain in Class 3A and be the largest school.

These are all unofficial right now. The IHSAA released enrollments for 409 schools, which would indicate 102 schools in Classes 4A, 3A and 2A and 103 in Class A. NP ranks 100th on the state's enrollment list with 1092 students. MV ranks 103rd with 1077. G-C is the largest county school with 1410 students, and is 72nd in enrollment.

Eastern Hancock will remain one of the smallest schools in Class 2A. With 355 students, EH ranks 291st, and would be 15 spots (and 39 students) ahead of the 1A/2A cutoff.

In football, the three larger county schools will remain in Class 4A, with G-C inching closer to the top, but all three would comfortably be in 4A for the next cycle. EH appears to be staying in Class A.

Among HHC schools, Shelbyville will jump back into Class 4A in bb/vb/baseball/softball after one cycle in Class 3A. Delta, Yorktown and Rushville will remain 3A, while Pendleton Heights will remain 4A ... essentially meaning Shelby & NP will move up, putting half the league in 4A and half in 3A.

In football, Delta will be the second-smallest Class 4A school, but all HHC schools will remain in the same classes where they currently compete -- with Rushville and Yorktown in 3A and the rest of the league in 4A.
