The draw is going on now
... and will be posted as the sectionals that involve Hancock County schools are announced.
We had an interesting game on Friday night, one that has been rehashed rather extensively in the Daily Reporter, as Mt. Vernon held New Palestine scoreless for the first half of the game -- a 19-0 score.
A few things about this game -- obviously, MV's defense is very solid, augmented by its size. The Dragons struggled to find openings against the Marauders' trapping zone. When the Dragons did get shots, they just didn't go down. The thing that we didn't see is that NP played pretty solid half-court defense. Expect a defensive struggle if they play again in the state tournament.
The Marauders' Daniel Turner scored eight of his 12 points in the second quarter. D'Armond Davis scored 10 points and had several rebounds and blocked shots. It was a big night for MV's five seniors -- Turner, Davis, P.J. Hubert, Jake Stafford and Daniel Morales. They cut the nets down at the end of the night as undisputed HHC champions. They've been one of the most decorated classes in MV history, and they've posted a record of 34-6 the last two years ... 54-27 over four years so far.
This Friday will be our final regular-season broadcast, when MV (17-2/6-0) travels to Yorktown (10-7/2-4). MV also has a big game Tuesday at Conseco Fieldhouse against Westfield.
This week's Hancock County game schedule:
Monday: Triton Central at EH (11-6)
Tuesday: MV (17-2) vs. Westfield (@Conseco), Mooresville at NP (9-9); G-C (5-13) at Connersville; EH at Morristown
Friday: MV at Yorktown (LISTEN LIVE), NP at Greenwood; Hagerstown at EH
We then are planning to broadcast the Mt. Vernon sectional in two weeks, with all games involving the Marauders and Dragons as part of the docket.

It's MV-NP night and a big weekend
It's a huge night in high school basketball. After being gone for a couple of weeks, we're back for the end of the regular season. We also will have a special announcement for you hopefully after the IHSAA Tournament draw on Sunday.
Mt. Vernon vs. New Palestine.
Nothing needs to go further. The Marauders, ranked #3 in 3A, are 16-2 and have won 12 straight. The Dragons are 9-8, but they have been very strong against some good teams and are somewhat snakebitten -- losing back-to-back games in 3OT and 2OT on one weekend a couple of weeks back. There are a few storylines going on here:
Also, the IHSAA tournament draw will be Sunday night at 6 p.m. We will find out where all four of the Hancock County schools go. As the draw is made, we'll post the pairings.
Elsewhere in the county, G-C has a double-weekend with Cambridge City coming to town on Friday and a trip to Delta on Saturday for a make-up game. EH is off, with a make-up game against Triton Central Monday.

There are a few storylines going on here:
- MV is looking to clinch the HHC title outright. It would be the Marauders' second HHC championship in a row, but first outright title. MV can clinch with a win in either of its final two conference games OR a Shelbyville loss.
- It's Senior Night for a very decorated Marauder senior class, which includes UWGB signee Daniel Turner, IUPUI signee P.J. Hubert, 6-7 center D'Armond Davis, 6-4 guard Jake Stafford and forward Daniel Morales. The first four are all averaging 10+ points per game. As a group, they've been at the forefront of a program that has gone 33-6 the last two seasons. They've won two HHC titles, two county titles and the Hall of Fame Classic in that run.
- New Palestine is a tough matchup. The Dragons and Marauders played a five-point game on New Year's Day, and their second regular-season meeting last year ended up a 42-41 game decided on a late FT by Turner. The Dragons have much of the nucleus back from a sectional championship team, led by athletic slashers Pat Feeney and Nathan Penley and a couple of steady senior guards in Trevor Baker and David Anderson, with sophomore Taylor Rainey providing scoring punch from outside. They spread their scoring around -- several players average between 8-10 ppg.
- This could be a sectional preview. That takes place in two weeks on the same floor. NP and MV last met in the sectional in 2007, with the Dragons winning that matchup.

The Feb. 5 game between New Palestine & Hamilton Southeastern has been postponed due to heavy snow in the area, so no broadcast tonight.

Friday night redux
Great night at Greenfield-Central tonight.
First off, homecoming festivities and the MV-GC rivalry brought an enormous crowd to Cougar Gym. Second of all, G-C retired the baseball number of 2006 grad Kyle Gibson, ace pitcher for two sectional champions, a regional championship and a first-round Minnesota Twins draft pick last summer. Kyle will do very well in his baseball career and in life. it was nice to see him honored. I've been honored to broadcast a few games with him over the years on WRGF. Once his pitching career is over, he'll be a tremendous broadcaster if he so chooses that route. Kyle also joined us for a few minutes on our halftime show -- listen to the archive to hear what he had to say.
Back to basketball. Greenfield-Central played a great first half tonight ... the fans were energized and the Cougars were, too. However, Mt. Vernon was able to use its strength inside and that keyed a 15-2 third-quarter run that essentially provided the margin in the Marauders' 58-43 victory.
G-C's team executed its gameplan of patience, patience, patience rather perfectly early. It took a while for the shots to go down -- MV led 13-2 until Derek Conley's off-balance 3 went in at the first-quarter buzzer. However, the Cougars' shots started going down, the defense picked up, and that lead got whittled down and down until it was 22-20 at half. MV then started punching the ball inside to Daniel Turner & D'Armond Davis, who combined for 17 second-half points, and they keyed that big third-quarter run, either on post moves, putbacks or kick-outs to Tyler Stafford and P.J. Hubert for 3s.
MV is now 9-2 (3-0) headed into Saturday's game at New Castle. G-C is 2-8 (0-3) headed into next Friday's game at Heritage Christian. The Cougars' record is deceiving -- they've played some good teams and they've played several very close games so far.
Three double-figure scorers for both teams -- Turner & Stafford with 14 each for MV, Hubert with 12. Derek Conley & Tyler Stone with 12 each for G-C, Wes McQueeney with 10. Stone, a 6-6 sophomore, looks more and more impressive every time we see him. He made some really nice one-on-one moves against Davis tonight.
Also a successful night for the other Hancock County teams. New Palestine (5-4) beat Delta 46-32, while Eastern Hancock (7-3) beat Muncie Burris 67-47.
Next week's Game of the Week is Friday night, as the Marauders take on HHC foe Rushville (4-4/2-2). Tipoff is 7:30, airtime approximately 7:10 from Mt. Vernon's new gymasium. Listen at www.audiosportsonline.net/Crossroads/2009Basketball.htm

County Tourney: Marauders win
Mt. Vernon was impressive tonight, jumping out to a 16-0 lead early and keeping the lead in that ballpark the rest of the way to win back-to-back county championships.
The Marauders beat Greenfield-Central 65-41. MV was on fire in the first quarter -- using its changing defenses to ignite an outstanding offense that outscored the Cougars 27-8 over the opening eight minutes. Things settled down from there, but MV stayed in control, largely because of the efforts of Daniel Turner. The 6-6 UWGB recruit had a big night, with 20 points and a slew of rebounds and steals. D'Armond Davis had five blocked shots inside. P.J. Hubert scored 10 points, as did PG Clayton Sanders -- the guy who is usually on the dishing end of Marauder baskets.
Wes McQueeney got G-C going with three first-half 3s and finished with 11 points.
If the two teams weren't familiar enough with each other, they'll go at it again next Friday night at G-C. We will have that broadcast as our Game of the Week.
Eastern Hancock won a back-and-forth consolation game 65-60, led by Steven Stunda's 29 points and 22 from Dustin Smith. Trevor Baker scored 17 for NP.
Also, congratulations to the Marauder girls team, which beat G-C 47-36 to win their county championship and break the Cougars' three-year stranglehold on the title. New Palestine won the consolation game 51-27 over Eastern Hancock.
It was a very enjoyable and intense two days of basketball. The crowds at all of the venues were great and the games were entertaining. It's now time to settle down and get ready for the second half of the regular season, which for us begins next Friday night.

LISTEN LIVE at 5:40 p.m. to the Hancock County boys championship
3A #10 Mt. Vernon (7-2) vs. Greenfield-Central (2-6)
Saturday, Jan. 2, 2009
Both teams had to survive close games tonight to win. The Marauders trailed by as many as eight points in the first half, but used a 15-7 third quarter to take the lead and eventually hold off New Palestine 53-48. The defending champs are looking to win their second straight title and their third in four years. MV is making its fourth straight appearance in the title game.
Greenfield-Central returned to the title game for the first time since the 2005-06 season with a 55-53 win over Eastern Hancock. The Cougars rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to win their second game of the season.
We will have the game for you at 5:40 p.m. -- tipoff at 6 p.m. from New Palestine.
The consolation game will be played simultaneously in the New Palestine auxiliary gym between the host Dragons (4-3) and Eastern Hancock (5-3).
On the girls side, the matchups are the same. Mt. Vernon used a big third quarter to pull away from New Palestine and win 48-27, while Greenfield-Central defeated Eastern Hancock 64-14.
G-C is now 11-2. MV, ranked #10 in 3A just like the Marauder boys, is now 9-2. NP (4-6) and EH (5-7) will play in the consolation game. Both tipoffs are approximately 7:45 p.m.
