New Palestine won the Hamilton Heights softball sectional Saturday morning, beating the host team 10-3. It was the Dragons' fourth straight sectional title.
NP will play in the regional Tuesday night at the winner of the Batesville sectional, whose semis and finals are being played today.
Eastern Hancock is also playing for its second consecutive sectional title today at 3 p.m. at Shenandoah. The Royals will face either Centerville or Union County, who are playing this morning. EH beat Cambridge City Lincoln 5-1 Friday night.
Eastern Hancock fell to Hagerstown by a 7-3 score in the opening round of the baseball sectional. Greenfield-Central (vs. Pendleton Heights @PH), New Palestine (vs. Hamilton Heights @Shelby) and Mt. Vernon (vs. Rushville @Shelby) will all play their semifinal games Monday morning.

Track and field: G-C's Dickerson, Sosnowski to state
Greenfield-Central athletes Matt Dickerson and Chris Sosnowski are moving on to the IHSAA track and field State Finals after their performances in Thursday's Connersville regional.
Dickerson will be moving on in both hurdles races, while Sosnowski was the regional champion in the discus.
Dickerson, a junior, finished second in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.20, three-tenths behind champion Adarius Washington of Warren Central (14.88). In the 300 hurdles, Dickerson was third by an eyelash, coming across in a virtual tie with runner-up Center Grove's Conner Stapleton, whose time of 39.586 was three-thousandths faster than Dickerson's time.
In the discus, Sonsowksi's second throw cleared 152-8, and that put him ahead of Greenwood's Brandon Rice, who threw 152-0 on his first throw. Those would hold up, as Sosnowski beat Rice by eight inches.

Thursday roundup: MV baseball moves on
Mt. Vernon's baseball team beat host Shelbyville 11-1 in Thursday's resumption of their sectional opener. The game had started Wednesday and was postponed with MV leading 1-0 in the fourth. The Marauders then poured it on from there. MV will face Rushville in Monday's second semifinal at approximately 12:30 p.m. NP will meet Hamilton Heights in the opening game at 10 a.m. at Shelbyville.

Cougar baseball wins, softball falls on stormy night
Greenfield-Central's baseball team advanced to the semifinal round of the Pendleton Heights sectional Wednesday, beating Anderson 5-1. Curtiss Irving scattered four hits, and the Cougars pulled ahead in the fourth with a four-run inning. Irving also had two hits and three RBI. John Scott also had an RBI hit in the fourth, and added another hit. Mitch Gibson and Jayden Jackson also had a pair of hits for the Cougars (14-12). The Cougars will play Pendleton Heights in Monday's 10 a.m. semifinal game. Anderson finishes 20-6.

One addition to our girls track regional coverage. New Palestine found out Wednesday that Nicole Fluegel (200) and Lauren Joray (400) advanced on their times to the State Finals. They both finished fourth in their events at the Shelbyville regional. This gives NP athletes in eight events at the girls State Finals, which will be June 4 in Bloomington.

Weekend roundup
New Palestine won the girls tennis sectional championship, beating Mt. Vernon 3-2.
MV won at No. 1 singles and doubles -- with Kayla Negley and Clara Ruegesegger winning in straight sets. At No. 3 singles, NP's Michaela Hurd also posted a quick straight-set victory. Where the Dragons won was at doubles, where MV won the first set in both matches. At No. 1 doubles, Hayley Bedwell and Ashley Roberts rallied and eventually won the third set 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Caitlynn Edon and Emily Moeller did the same to win a 6-3 third set and clinch the sectional title. It's NP's fifth girls sectional title in seven years.
In baseball, Greenfield-Central split with Delta. In the first game, the Cougars won 14-3 in six innings, with Curtiss Irving scattering eight hits. In the second game, Delta rallied to win 4-2 with three runs in the seventh inning. Austin Conway hit a three-run homer for the Eagles. G-C finishes with a 9-5 conference record and is 13-12 overall. G-C and Mt. Vernon finish in a third-place tie in the HHC.
